Basing it on Bulava is a smart move. I always wished they would make the Bulava land based.

But I don't understand why is Rogozin announcing this? What has Roscosmos got to do with Strategic nukes? This should have been announced by the commander of strategic missile forces.

Hopefully they will use this as an HGV carrier, the current payload of the Bulava is rather dissapointing.

The manufacturer of these systems falls under Roscosmos corporation.

As I said in space talk - roscoemos doesn't just make rockets to space. They also make russias ICBM's.

Bulava standard payload is 6 warheads of 150kt each. What else do you want?

He's disappointed that one Bulava can only destroy an entire country, perhaps a deathstar would be more to his liking?

Doubt the source, where is a direct quote from Rogozin?

I agree, sources need to be defined and getting straight from horses mouth is needed.

It's a standard payload for SLBMs, what more do you need?

As for this new train ICBM thing as long as they use Bulava and mount it on standard train it's all good

Last thing they need is a repeat of that Soviet fiasco where they needed special missile on special train that was tearing the tracks apart and was sticking like a sore thumb on satellite images

Ordinary missile on ordinary train container with ''Maersk'' logo on the side and it will work swimmingly

They could even download the missile and make it a 5,000km range weapon with more warheads and call it an IRBM so it does not get counted under Start because it would not be an ICBM.

They could point them at Europe and the Middle East and Japan and Asia/Pacific in general... save the bigger missiles for the US.

You could have an air defence carriage with enormous numbers of TOR missiles ready to fire, with a retractable four sided AESA antenna array for both search and tracking and guidance...

Not quite Bulava, this lightweight SLBM weighs 37 tons. The Trident II weighs 58 tons and has a throw weight of 2.8 tons. Bulava has 1.15 tons. The R 29RM also has 2.8 tons of throw weight but weighs only 40 tons. This is due to the liquid fuel supply, but in relation to the Bulava it also has disadvantages.

Liquid rockets are typically more energy dense per weight and have more efficient engines. The solid rockets typically have less volume for the same amount of energy and last more in storage. Solids are also usually safer to store.

What's really interesting is that solid fuel missiles have a shorter boost phase. Bulava reportedly has a shorter boost phase than Sineva. Similarly, Topol M / Yars is compared to the R 36M2. In Sarmat, it is to be shortened compared to R 36M2.Of course, the Sarmat run on liquid fuel.
