Some have argued the intent was to generate protests for the election

But most of his supporters left Russia anyway

Reasons to kill Navalny:

1. Will undoubtedly lead to uninformed western fools calling for even more sanctions on Russia, possibly even distinct "acts" (cf Magnitsky, whose entire story was always extremely misrepresented, as was his demise, but Navalny doesn't really have a murderous oligarch like Browder perpetuating the myths, so I don't think that'll work in the long run)

2. Naïve belief it could spur some kind of domestic uprising in Russia (same there, Navalny is irrelevant, but so was Dugin [and his daughter who was killed by Ukraine 'by accident' - the bomb was made for Dugin] , but the western hype is what Ukraine went for, and Navalny has been the focus of western hype for years.

Even during the Soviet period the only problem was with Western Ukraine, the rest of Ukraine was loyal. Geez, even the most popular Soviet film director was an ethnic Ukrainian.

That is a half-truth.

Yes, Ukrainian nationalism reached the highest levels of support in western Ukraine, but it was not entirely absent in the east either.

Around 80% of the Ukrainians from the 104th Anti-Tank Brigade "Freies Ukraine" were from eastern Ukraine. That is only a single example.
