New Iranian Aras 2 Army SUV and Raad MRAP Armored Vehicle

In the presence of the Minister of Defense and Support of the Armed Forces of Iran, a presentation of the new Raad armored vehicle with mine protection took place. Also during the ceremony, the Aras 2 tactical vehicle was handed over to the Iranian armed forces.

Raad - this is the newest armored vehicle with increased mine protection with a 6x6 wheel arrangement, a poster photo of which appeared last month, let me remind you that another similar armored vehicle - Toufan, which has been producing a 4x4 wheel formula since last year.

Brigadier General Amir Khatami, speaking at this ceremony, noted that the Raad armored vehicle is capable of withstanding the impact of artillery fragments and a bullet with a radioactive steel core, as well as anti-tank mine explosions. According to him, this machine can very well ensure the safety of command personnel and important personalities when passing suspicious sections of the road where mine traps and roadside mines can be laid.

The Iranian Defense Minister also noted that the Raad armored vehicle can be used in asymmetric warfare, in street battles, at border outposts and in other operational areas.

Khatami at the same time, mentioning the tactical vehicle "Aras 2", noted that this car has increased cross-country ability in difficult areas, it can be equipped with different small arms and other weapons, it has greater fuel economy, higher acceleration compared to the previous generation models and the ability to carry a much larger range of weapons.

Heidar 1 small land-based robot platforms, which are connected by control system to the network with other such robots and UAVs. Weapons can be mounted on them, but judging by the shape of the robot itself and the frames from the tests, these are primarily controlled moving mines. The video below shows how during the test such a robot pulls up and explodes under the tank.

Labbayk-1 guided missile. It is intended for the modernization of old unguided tactical missiles of the Army’s Army, like the IRGC has been upgrading its Zelzal unguided missiles to guided missiles for years.

Repair and modernization of Iranian army equipment

The Shahid Zarharan Army Army Repair and Modernization Center is located in Shahriyar near Tehran. During the visit, the chief of the General Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, Major General Mohammad Bagheri, was shown to him various models of repaired and modernized equipment, including Grad MLRS, BTR-60PB, Chieftain tanks, 155-mm M109 self-propelled howitzers, etc.

Modernization of BTR-50 and BTR-60 armored personnel carriers and T-72 tanks in Iran

The organization of the jihad of research and self-sufficiency of the ground forces of the IRGC of Iran has shown its developments, including the modernized BTR-50, BTR-60, T-72, reconnaissance UAV Meraj-1 and much more. Most attention was paid to the option of deep modernization of the BTR-50PK, which in Iran were removed from service many years ago and are in storage, while at least some of the cars are apparently in a very lively state, since in 2016 a certain number of BTR-50 transferred to the Iraqi Militia Forces as part of assistance in the fight against terrorist ISIS.



During the modernization, armor protection was strengthened, and most importantly, a new Iranian uninhabited combat module with a 30mm 2A42 automatic cannon, a 7.62mm machine gun and an ICS with day / night sights with a thermal imager, a laser range finder, etc. . The BTR-50 so modernized was called Makran.

About the combat module, it is indicated that its variants can be installed on different infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers during modernization.

As for the modernized T-72M, it was first shown last year at the exhibition of achievements of the Iranian military-industrial complex in honor of the 40th anniversary of the revolution. The tank has seriously enhanced protection, installed a remotely controlled turret for a machine gun, upgraded the sighting system, installed a thermal imager for the driver, etc.



The upgraded BTR-60PB with a 23-mm gun and dynamic protection units. Previously, the Organization of Jihad for the Research and Self-Sufficiency of the Ground Forces of the Iranian Army in the Heydar-7 project also proposed a similar thing. In both cases, the main question is how the thin armor of the armored personnel carrier will survive undermining the charge of dynamic protection.


The upgraded 122 mm MLRS combat vehicle with the installation of special guides for launching guided missiles in addition to guiding packages for conventional unguided missiles. The name of such an upgraded system is Hedayat 122. A potentially very promising development.


Light reconnaissance UAV Meraj-1. Weight is 35 kg. Able to fly up to 10.5 hours at an altitude of 3650 meters with a payload of up to 5 kg. The range of the radio communication channel with the command post is 150 km. The landing scheme for something like skids under the fuselage, already known for some other Iranian UAVs.

Deep modernization of the T-72S in Iran according to the Karrar tank standard

Iranian Defense Minister General Amir Khatami visited the Bani-Hashem industrial complex near Dorud in Lorestan province. This tank plant near Dorud was built with Russian assistance in the 1990s. for the release of licensed T-72S, and now it is undergoing a deep modernization of the Iranian T-72S according to the standard of the Karrar tank, officially presented in 2017.The tanks are equipped with a new tower with a modernized control system and a communication system, a remotely controlled machine gun, protection is enhanced by installing new elements of dynamic protection, etc., sensors for warning about laser and possibly radar exposure are installed, etc.

Let me remind you that in 2018 it was reported thatthat for the Iranian armed forces it is supposed to produce and modernize 700-800 Karrar tanks in total. However, the serious economic hardships that Iran is experiencing with the return and further escalation of stifling US sanctions in the past two years have clearly affected the speed and scope of work. Nevertheless, the Minister of Defense has now expressed the hope that it will be possible to modernize all the tanks in use.

Now war of words between soldiers of the Pakistani Army and the Iranian Army. Both sides accuse each other of transgression.

Better be careful... don't think they will ignore such things.


BTW quite a distance up this page there are some small drones with AKs mounted upside down that are strapped to the vehicles and operated remotely.

I watched that and thought it was quite clever but then also wondered why they didn't use RPDs instead... even with just the standard belt you get 100 rounds ready to fire unlike the standard AK 30 shots or RPK 40 round mag in the 7.62x39mm calibre.

You could also modify the belt to carry rather more than 100 rounds too... probably fairly easily enough... it could become quite a useful fire support platform.

Of course there are terror groups in Pakistan that cross border into Iran to attack border guards . Iranians asked Pakistan to control these groups , but attacks continued . Then I think Iran carried out operation inside Pakistan against these groups . Including strikes by artillery or missile . I think as long as only terror groups are targets when close to border region , then respective border guards on either side , who are in hot pursuit , should be able to cross border temporarily , in order to neutralise the threat . Especially when threat emanating from their side of border . Since following formalities and waiting for permission etc , May mean target lost . An agreement needs to be made between border guards .

Having said this , it is important to note that Pakistan is ally of USA , and ISI  linked to extremist group like Taliban and others , may not be able to cooperate fully against terror groups in this region . Iranians must be careful that any intelligence sharing will not be immediately useful to terror groups , and reveal details of counter-strike against them .

My personal opinion about Pakistan mentality towards Iran , is not positive .  Compared to that of say Indians . Pakistanis seem hostile and aggressive . Iranians will never feel such hatred or animosity , as to threaten to kill Pakistanis . I remember a Paki General threatening to nuke Iran , in case of war between Iran and Saudi...... ! Recently news opinion from Pakistan seems to be that Pakistan is going to make things very difficult for Iran in Afghanistan ! Of course this border guards threatening to kill Iranians is a serious matter and Pakistan needs to take action against him .

Afghan people will I think make things very difficult for Pakistan support of extremists in Afghanistan . The Road North May be closed for Pakistan through Afghanistan . Their prison , their choice .

Previously Pakistan did not risk a direct war with Iran because it would mean re directing a whole lot of military resources from the east to the west. But now with India pre occupied with China and Afghanistan being controlled by their proxy Taliban, Pakistan may step up the pressure on Iran.

Such a Pakistani misadventure may well be financed by Saudis and Turkey.

They could just as easily be funded by China to cause trouble for India as well as a sort of payback for India focussing on China as an enemy too.


BTW my idea about replacing the AKs with RPDs... the RPD with chinese link belts can be made as long as you want them, but while it is full auto only it does fire from an open bolt so between firing cooling air can be flowing through the barrel and there wont be a round sitting in a hot chamber waiting to be fired.

It also makes sense to use old RPDs from reserve stocks as they are better suited to the job and are likely not being used for other purposes. the old drum of the RPD was just a simple box that held the linked rounds with no springs or special design so with a fixed weapon on top of that ground vehicle you could simply shape a box shaped ammo holder that could hold enormous numbers of rounds if you wanted ready to fire...

I was thinking about people but especially politicians , dreamers all of them . Dreams of God like omnipotence . All plans of mice and men ! While in front of them their mortality and weakness ignored . The Germans had this idea of ROV in WW2 , in anti-Tank role . The ROV , guided by electric cable and loaded with explosives , would go close to Tank or under it . They also trained Dogs to do the same , if I remember right ! But it was not successful . I think the ROV got blown up , before getting close to Tank . So having ROV armed in any role , brings about question of survivability and cost . Can ROV climb in and out of trenches like soldier ? Can it survive a bit under fire from 7.62 rounds or larger ? Is it best used out of range of small arms fire , and carry anti-Tank manpad ? Yes I think the later . Maybe cheaper than UCAV and looking better than loosing soldier to small arms fire or to Mines or to artillery in hazard environment .
