If Egypt paid for them they can do whatever they want with them. Including keeping them mothballed there in Russia. The question is did they pay or not.

It's kinda true. But I doubt they just gave money without receiving the planes. And I'm pretty sure they didn't give all the money at once.

Most likely, like for any big contracy, they paid for batches of work, with some control made by the egyptian.

And I doubt Russia will keep them for ever. If Egypt doesn't to receive them , Russia is not obliged to pay back nor to keep them. Egyptian will have to make a choice, take them or see the customs seize the aircarft and sell them on auction. Something very common for other goods.

There is one issue that I find even more interesting. Iran operates around a hundred of F-4 and F-14 if I am not mistaken. Both are two seat aircraft, with sensors/weapon operators. Which means, that they have more than a hundred well-trained officers who costed them millions each. They have a well established structure of operating two seat aircraft, and I can bet that the tactics they have implemented is heavily based on the fact.
I wouldn't find it reasonable to get rid of them, which means that it is Su-30 the best choice for them. While Su-35 can replace the single seaters of the old generation like Mirage ...

True, but you don't just get rid of 100+ best trained soldiers you can have for no reason. You know my point Laughing

In a lot of cases the weapons operator has flight training. It is just a matter of training those weapons operators who wish so to become pilots themselves. The only problem is getting enough aircraft to do this.

Yak-130 at Kotelnikovo - 704º UAP Training/Instruction Aviation Regiment (учебный авиационный полк - УАП)

The history of the aviation training base in Kotelnikovo is inextricably linked with the Kachinsky Higher Military Aviation School of Pilots named after A.F. Myasnikov.
The legendary Kacha was founded back in 1910, first as the Sevastopol Officers' School. When the Great Patriotic War began, Kacha was evacuated across the Volga, to the village of Krasny Kut in the Saratov region.
Organizationally, the school at that time consisted of three separate aviation squadrons. In 1943, the Third Aviation Squadron moved to the regional center of Aleksandrov Gai, located 150 km from Krasny Kut. On the basis of this squadron, the third regiment of the Kachin aviation school was formed in 1945. In March 1946, it was given its actual name - 704 Training Aviation Regiment (TAR), which it still bears today.
From 1947 to 1954 The UAP was based in Morshansk, and on July 17, 1954 it was relocated to the city of Kotelnikovo, Stalingrad Region.

Since November 1, 1998, the unit of the Kotelnikovsky garrison were part of the Armavir and Krasnodar Higher Military Aviation Schools of Pilots, and in 2010, parts of the garrison became part of the Military Educational and Scientific Center of the Air Force "Air Force Academy" (branch in Krasnodar) .

I wouldn't find it reasonable to get rid of them, which means that it is Su-30 the best choice for them. While Su-35 can replace the single seaters of the old generation like Mirage ...

Well I was thinking that their first batch might be Su-35s but their second batch might be the new Su-30s with the radar and engines and avionics of the Su-35... essentially a two seat Su-35.

It would give them Su-35 capability in a two seat aircraft.

The Su-35 is supposed to have an AI copilot which simplifies flying and fighting in the aircraft, and if you add that to the Su-30 that would mean the guy in the back is extra. So what could he be doing? He could be controlling a couple of wingman drones or communicating with ground based units either air defence units or front line units... with a birds eye view thanks to his AESA radar and any optics pods he might be carrying.

Of course their existing tactics might suit a two seat fighter, but experience operating the aircraft they might find that the improved automation and simplification of tasks might mean a single seater makes more sense.

In a lot of cases the weapons operator has flight training. It is just a matter of training those weapons operators who wish so to become pilots themselves. The only problem is getting enough aircraft to do this.

You almost always have more pilots than aircraft.

The widespread use of drones means a small light aircraft like the Yak-130 or perhaps one of their modified F-5s in two seat versions would be useful for flying with and operating with friendly drones... you could have the light aircraft carrying gunpods and light guided missiles to engage drones in the air or on the water... we have seen in the Ukraine that the west prefers to attack with drones to try to take out your shipping without risking their expensive white elephants...

The new model R-73s look rather impressive... with 180 degree engagements with a datalink connection to the aircraft and lock on after launch capacity... that is pretty dangerous for any enemy... even sneaking up behind you.

The Russian Ministry of Defense has decided to create and deploy new regiments of military transport aviation in the main strategic directions - western, northern and southern,Izvestia sources reported. And in the Far East, the first of them has already been created. The regiments will be equipped with Il-76, An-26 transport aircraft and, possibly, Mi-26 helicopters. Experts note that new units will make it possible to more quickly transfer forces and assets to threatened areas—this is necessary in a difficult military-political situation.

    Gathering of regiments

The fundamental decision to increase the mobility of Russian troops in each strategic direction was made by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation, sources in the military department told Izvestia. For this purpose the formation of several new military transport aviation regiments has begun.

The first regiment has already been formed in the Eastern Military District, and another one will appear in the western strategic direction. In the near future, the formation of similar military units will begin in other directions.

As the publication’s interlocutors noted, this decision was made based on the experience of a special military operation. During the Northern Military District, transport aviation has become a universal tool that helps transport troops and military equipment over long distances in the shortest possible time.

The task of the new air units will be the transportation of personnel, weapons and military equipment, as well as the drop of troops and reconnaissance airborne units. The aircraft of the new regiments will also carry out tasks of supplying troops with materiel, Fuel and lubricants, evacuation of the wounded.

The basis of the new regiments' fleet will be Il-76 aircraft. It is also planned that they will include An-26 and, possibly, Mi-26 helicopters - however, this decision has not yet been made.

In the capital of Buryatia, Ulan-Ude, on December 1, ceremonial events were held dedicated to the revival of the 600th transport aviation regiment, disbanded 25 years ago, in 1998, as part of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

It appeared in Shadrinsk in 1963 as a separate regiment, and in 1965 it was relocated to the Lithuanian SSR. Later he participated in the first Chechen war. Since 1992, it was based in Shadrinsk, in 1998 it was merged with the 8th Guards Regiment of the BTA.

Izvestia previously wrote tha ta new military transport aviation regiment will appear in Tambov by the end of the year. For its basing, the infrastructure of the local airfield is being seriously expanded, after which it will become a large and modern aviation base.

The Russian Ministry of Defense will begin to work on the issue of creating new military transport aviation regiments in 2021. By the end of the decade, more than a hundred Il-76s should receive new parts - both those recently rolled off the production line and modernized ones.

Recently, the military-political situation in the world has changed greatly and the military transport aviation forces we were counting on are no longer enough, military expert Vladislav Shurygin told Izvestia.

“Troop maneuver and transfer are becoming one of the main points ensuring the country’s defense capability,” he explained. —If necessary, we must quickly and clearly transfer forces to one or another strategic direction. Considering the scale of our country, airplanes can best cope with these tasks. The military transport aviation that exists is still not enough. Therefore, new regiments will be deployed in the main directions. At first they will be mixed. In the future, they should be transferred to one type of equipment. This will greatly facilitate the logistics and maintenance of these parts.

Military transport aviation plays a vital role in ensuring the logistics of the Northern Military District and the armed forces, Honored Test Pilot, Hero of Russia Igor Malikov told Izvestia.

    — Now the BTA pilots have the highest workload, — he explained. — The same transportation of personnel is constantly needed. Using a civil carrier is expensive and not always prompt. Their own cars will deliver people from point A to point B as quickly as possible. And there is also the transportation of equipment, cargo, and possible tasks of conducting landing operations. In addition, aviation will help quickly deliver ammunition from rear depots to one or another direction of the Northern Military District. The weather is bad now, there is icing on the roads, snow drifts and traffic is very difficult. In this case, BTA aircraft come to the rescue; airfields are always maintained in the required condition.

    Updated IL-76

The basis of the regiments will be IL-76. Including the new Il-76MD-90A,which are produced at the Ulyanovsk enterprise Aviastar-SP.
    production

The wing was completely redesigned for the updated aircraft. Modern technologies have made it possible to reduce the weight of the vehicle by 3 tons. New PS-90A-76 engines were installed on it. They consume less fuel, which increases the flight range by 20%. The maximum load capacity of the machine also increased from 48 to 60 tons.

On the modernized aircraft, the landing gear was strengthened, and the radio-electronic and flight equipment was completely changed. The transporter was equipped with a self-defense complex that will protect it from portable anti-aircraft missile systems during takeoff and landing.

The BTA currently has about 250 aircraft and helicopters in service. In recent years, the role of military transport aviation has increased significantly. Since 2015, it has been supplying the Russian group in Syria. Last January, it evacuated Russian citizens from unrest-ridden Kazakhstan and transferred CSTO units there.

Since the beginning of the Northern Military District in Ukraine, winged “trucks” continuously transport personnel, equipment, as well as ammunition and equipment. According to official data, the load on the BTA has more than doubled; An-124 and Il-76 have carried out over 10 thousand flights since the beginning of the SVO by mid-July of this year. They transported 2.3 thousand units of equipment, more than 300 thousand military personnel and 160 thousand tons of cargo.

in the Kaliningrad region, the 689th air regiment was transferred to the 6th Air Force and Air Defense Army

The air base in Chkalovsk remains subordinate to the Baltic Fleet naval aviation command

MOSCOW, June 26. /TASS/. The 689th Fighter Aviation Regiment, based at the air base in Chkalovsk in the Kaliningrad Region, was withdrawn from the naval aviation of the Baltic Fleet and reassigned to the 6th Army of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Aerospace Forces (VKS) of the Russian Federation.
This was reported to TASS by a source close to the security forces of the Kaliningrad special region.

“The 689th air regiment with Su-27 and Su-30SM2 fighters, previously part of the 34th mixed aviation division of the naval aviation of the Baltic Fleet, was transferred to the subordination of the 6th Air Force and Air Defense Army of the Aerospace Forces,” he said.

According to the agency's interlocutor, the air base in Chkalovsk remains subordinate to the Baltic Fleet naval aviation command. He added that the 34th mixed air division, consisting of two regiments, remains part of the naval aviation of the Baltic Fleet.

At the same time, the 44th Air Defense Division, which was previously part of the Baltic Fleet with a deployment in the Kaliningrad region, was also reassigned to the 6th Air Force and Air Defense Army of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

TASS does not have official confirmation of this information.

Earlier, a draft decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the reorganization of military districts, developed by the Russian Ministry of Defense, was published, which spoke about changing the organizational structure of the Russian Armed Forces, including the reassignment of the fleets and the Caspian flotilla to the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, and the Air Force and Air Defense armies to the Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces .

Then , 34 division has 4º OMShAP and the 396º Mixed Heliopter Regiment and it seems will remain in Chlalovsk

689º to VVSiPVO of Leningrad Military District and I wonder if will be transferred to Chernyakhovsk or other airfielf of Kaliningrad oblast

it is possible 689º received a batch of Su-30SM2 last year to replace older Su-27UB. Also has 20 Su-27P
I think has to receive two squadrons of Su-27SM3 for the moment to replace older Su-27P

4º OMShAP received 20 Su-30SM and SM2 and also has a dozen of Su-24M and a couple or tree Su-24MR
    396º Helicopter Regiment has about 16 Kamov 27M/27PS/29, 16 Mi-24 and 10 to 12 Mi-8
