Interesting black sections on the engine intakes.

    RAM?

Note the suction relief doors on the inner engine trunk, which suggests they have made the intakes smaller than they should be to reduce radar signature and increase air capacity with extra inlets in the side. Having them on the inner side minimises the RCS effect from the sides. Note on the left engine intake visible in the photo they appear as black vertical lines on the blue exterior, while in the right engine intake they appear blue in the otherwise black interiors.

I agree the black areas will likely be RAM coating.

    Nice photo thanks for posting.

Photo of the first VMF AN-140 inside, also some good info about An-140 prospects. Looks like the bird will find a home within Russian gov orders; the military seems pleased with the plane.

So far VMF has only ordered one plane (part of MOD order for 11 airframes), but is expected to get another 3 from the upcoming order for 15 airframes.

Within the next ten years, MOD is expected to order 62 planes, FSB - 23 planes, MVD - 12 planes, MCHS - 11 planes, Roskosmos - around 10 planes

VVS Russian Air Force: News #1 - Page 12 Empty Kamov Ka-92 high-speed helicopter

Post  Sancho Wed Dec 19, 2012 12:34 am

Hi, I am interested in infos about the Ka 92 helicopter. It was reported that it is in a competition with the Mil Mi X to provide Russia with a NG pusher helicopter in the medium class. Can somebody tell me the status of the competition? What are the aims and what will be it's purpose in the military?

When you compare available specs, the Ka 92 should be in a comparable weight class as the Mi 38, while the Mi X1, would be more similar to the Ka 60. Is that right and if so, why this competition when Russia already have new helicopters in this classes?

Any info that sheds some light is welcomed!

What are the aims and what will be it's purpose in the military?

The purpose is a significant increase in flight speed, which is a common weakness with helicopters, in addition to their cost.

Russian Warplanes to Get New Paint Scheme

MOSCOW, December 26 (RIA Novosti) - Next year the Russian Air Force will abandon its gray camouflage coloring and use several new color patterns for its warplanes, a source in the Russian defense ministry said on Wednesday.

Earlier in the day Izvestia reported that Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu has reversed the order of his predecessor Anatoly Serdyukov to repaint all warplanes only using different shades of gray.

Starting next year a variety of colors will be used depending on the terrain around the airbases.

“Indeed, such a decision has been made. In the past, Air Force aircraft were painted different colors but when Serdyukov became [defense] minister that procedure was abolished and aircraft began to be painted gray,” the ministry source told RIA Novosti.

Not all warplanes will be repainted, he added, only new aircraft and those that have undergone major repairs.

The exact color patterns or the number of patterns are a closely guarded secret, Izvestia said, adding that possible colors will include green, sandy, dark blue and white.

Serdyukov decided to borrow a page from the USAF which adopted a uniform aircraft color scheme in the 1970s to eliminate the need for repainting every time a warplane changes its base.

The decision was made without consultations with experts or approval from the Defense Ministry’s research centers.

It costs up to 300,000 rubles ($10,000) to repaint one plane and it will take three to four years to repaint all of Russia's warplanes.

New dandy colors for the Russian Air Force planes? now thats nice rather then this blackish color every plane or helicopter gets these days.

There is some gloss in paint but i doubt it makes any difference during operations.

Probably not, gloss is an odd finish for a military aircraft though.
