We have a squadron of them. 48 more are on order and will have three regiments by 2015. It will be more than a match for your poor TuAF but already have MiG-31 for that.

Who is the master in the sky?
    28.07.2009

Interviews with Australian military analyst Carlo Koppe

Co-founder of a think tank Air Power Australia Dr Carlo Kopp (Carlo Kopp) is known through his research on combat aircraft and air defense weapons, and western Russia. In addition, he actively critic prospective American fighter F-35 and at least an active supporter of the project F-22. In an interview Lente.ru scientist and qualified pilot to share their opinions about the outcomes of the technical confrontation of East and West, and also talked about the prospects that await the world military industries.

Lenta.ru: Dr. Kopp, in one of his recent research, you have stated that U.S. combat aircraft F-15, F-16 and F/A-18, as well as prospective Joint Strike Fighter, have no chance of survival in combat Russian air defense systems, as well as the Russians have successfully improved their experience of using NATO's military conflict in Iraq in 1991 and in Serbia in 1999. Explain please, what achievements of Russian producers do you think most important, and what measures should be NATO countries to achieve superiority over Russia's air defenses?

Dr. Kopp: Following the end of the Cold War technology, used in Russian industry for the creation of anti-aircraft radar systems, anti-aircraft missiles, mobile launchers of stations, has improved significantly.

In Soviet times it was created many wonderful and innovative designs of defense equipment, such as radar illumination and guidance for 5N63-MANPADS P 300P, a "cold start" for anti-aircraft guided missiles 5V55/48N6/9M82, early warning radars 5N64/64N6. But then the West had the advantage thanks to a number of new technologies. With their help, have been developed at that time, advanced computers, active phased array, high-frequency processors, protivoradiolokatsionnye missiles, and, of course, stealth technology.

We are very concerned that the Soviet anti-aircraft missiles (Zur) destroyed many of our aircraft in Vietnam and, later, they bear the loss of the aircraft sold to Israel with the West. Therefore, the establishment of invisibility technology and modern means of electronic warfare, capable of withstanding the Russian air defense at the time, had invested billions of dollars. The effectiveness of these expenditures confirmed defeat the Soviet Union created a system of air defense of Iraq in 1991.

Since 1991, many talented Russian engineers, designers were able to get acquainted with the many technologies that were unavailable to them during the cold war. " Pre-existing restrictions imposed by Western countries, were withdrawn. Now the Russian weapons systems are not so very different from their Western counterparts, and often operate on the same computer processors.

For example, many Western analysts were shocked when a Russian company Agat reported that the processor uses the U.S. company Texas Instruments, in its latest active radar homing head of anti-aircraft guided missiles and air-to-air missiles. Similar processors used, and Western producers of missile weapons. An important factor was the fact that the Russian engineers were able to use many advanced technologies and components, which do not have access for their predecessors in Soviet times.

The defeat of the Iraqi air defense forces in 1991 has caused great confusion in the ranks of supporters of the use of guided missiles for the defense of combat aircraft. Russian specialists have carefully studied the success of American troops and were able to see the strengths and weaknesses of the technical strategy for the United States. Nevertheless, it is difficult to say exactly which elements of the Russian air defense systems give them the key advantage, as most of them work in the complex.

Very dangerous anti-aircraft missile long-range 48N6E2/E3 and 40N6, because they can attack our air system, radar, electronic reconnaissance and target designation as well as radio-electronic interference to aircraft production. And so, consequently, makes our troops "blind" in battle, does not allow us to deal with enemy radar systems.

New radar phased-array antennas and high power radio frequency hopping is also able to resist most of our aircraft.

New self-MANPADS high patency, such as "Favorite", "Triumph", "Antey-2500" system to protect against radar protivoradiolokatsionnyh controlled bombs and missiles, such as missile and missile-gun complexes "Tor-M2E and Pantsir-C1, also pose a serious interference with the enemy to suppress air defenses.

By the way, the success of the United States and its allies in 1991 and 1999 largely was due to the vulnerability of the Soviet stationary air defense systems. For example, the system S-75 and C-125, which was easy to locate and destroy through protivoradiolokatsionnyh controlled bombs and missiles.

Modern Russian low-frequency radars and passive systems radiodetection can also play a role. Although they are not very effective against the F-22 and B-2 bombers, but it is less able to detect "invisible" F-35 aircraft and older models and put them ZURy.

The latest U.S. stealth technology, realized in the construction of F-22 and B-2, can successfully resist the Russian radars and missiles, but the older models of American and European aircraft were obsolete in comparison with the Russian systems, such as "Triumph" and "Favorit" as well as the new radars, and the remedies that are completed, these ZRS.

And it significantly changes the status of the global strategic scale.

Lenta.ru: The latest system of air defense S-400 Triumph, according to the developer, significantly above the older MANPADS P-300. However, the rearmament of the Russian army at the C-400 has been slow, and today the "triumph" deployed in a few regions of Russia, while the most common are still C-300. In your opinion, should Russia to speed up the delivery of S-400 of his army, or rather, it would be logical to focus on more sophisticated weapons that meets the requirements of future wars? Is export-art air defense, or deliver them to their allies such as Belarus?

Dr. Kopp: From the perspective of the Western military analysts say that Russia will make less of "Triumph", the better, as their exports become for us the problem of strategic nature. Countries such as Iran and Venezuela received by the system, such as C-400, could bring us serious trouble.

Sell S-400 of Belarus may be attractive from a commercial point of view. But it did not improve Moscow's relations with the EU, since the P-400, located near the western borders, would cover half the territory of Poland, and will not allow the Polish aviation airspace safely use their own country. Strategically, such actions can be described as provocative and destabilizing.

Profitable export of S-400 or not - depends on the specific effects. For example, the sale of S-300 to Cyprus to create a political dust in the Aegean region. Similar effects can be expected in any other place, which will be exported C-400. This is a powerful and strategically important weapons that can neutralize any military aircraft in the arsenal which has no F-22 fighter jets.

Lenta.ru: You are one of the most prominent supporters of the idea that American multi-fighter F-22 far exceeds the forward-looking F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, despite the fact that both aircraft belong to the fifth generation, and project F-35 is younger. You also think that the U.S. should continue the production of F-22, and to allow the export of their closest allies, including Australia. In your opinion, could a run, the export of these aircraft and how it may affect the balance of power in the world?

Dr. Kopp: First, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter - not exactly the fifth-generation fighter, because he lacks nadzvukovoy march speed, stealth technology and maneuverability. He recalls a third-generation fighter, which was established with the use of certain technologies fifth. It is designed to hunt for the tanks on the battlefield, and will not be able to replace the much more sophisticated F-22. To argue that the F-35 can effectively resist the Russian ZRS-300PMU2 C and C-400 can only people who have not studied their ability to care.

The balance of power in today's world is changing, and changing is not in favor of the West, as many Western countries have not upgraded its fleet of military aircraft of the specimen 1980.

China plans to adopt more than 500 fighter Flanker (Su-27 and Su-30 - Lenta.ru). This number is comparable to the fleet of American F-15 fighter of the cold war. But the F-15, built in 1985, can not compete with a fighter Flanker, built in 2008. The total number of Russian planes set to Asia, comparable to the fleet of the USSR and the Warsaw Pact in 1990. At the same time, Australia and Japan are in a difficult strategic position, since Japan armed fighters F-15CJ, 1983 release, and Australia - the old F/A-18 and plans to buy F-35.

Fundamental problems with the resolution of the export F-22 Australia, Israel, Japan, or indeed none. Risk assessment carried out by the Americans for about ten years ago, showed that Australia, in this sense can be trusted: Canberra will not copy or export of sensitive technologies. Where more than Australia, Israel and Japan are concerned that the Pentagon wants to move on the world market for F-35 rather than F-22 and U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates insists on stopping the production of F-22.

However, many U.S. congressmen today calling to allow the export of F-22, and the prospect that Australia, Israel and Japan in the coming years will receive the aircraft is very high. It is likely that Gates will insist on closing the program, but the level of support for the export F-22 in the U.S. Congress is very high.

Lenta.ru: Today, in fact, only Russia and China create their own fifth generation fighters, which theoretically could compete with American F-22 and F-35. Both projects are still highly classified, however, in your opinion, what could be the result of this work? If successful, which of these two countries can compare with the potential of the United States and NATO?

Dr. Kopp: I think that predicting the results of the work that has not yet been presented, is always dangerous.

Russia has the majority of technologies necessary to create a level of fighter aircraft F-22, but she had no experience in the development of large aircraft invisible. When the PAK FA (working title promising fifth-generation fighter aircraft company Sukhoi - Lenta.ru) will be presented, we can assess how engineers "Sukhoy managed to cope with these difficulties. Even if the aerodynamically PAK FA will be at the level of F-22 or surpass his success in battle will still depend on the technology invisible.

Chinese J-XX? The Chinese are so far not disclosed anything about it before, so that any conclusions about the capabilities this aircraft will be complete speculation.

Lenta.ru: While Russia and the United States in fact the market share of combat aircraft, a number of other countries to develop and promote their multipurpose fighter. This, for example, the French Rafale, the Pan-European Typhoon, Swedish Gripen. Will the Russian manufacturers such as MiG and Sukhoi, remain competitive in the market and which of the Russian fighter you would call the best to date and why?

Dr. Kopp: Success in air combat depends on many key factors. The advantage of receiving the aircraft equipped with airborne radars greater power have more missiles, have a high speed and maneuverability, zapravleny large numbers of fuel and is also protected by more sophisticated stealth technology. None of the European fighter aircraft on these indicators did not have a significant advantage over the new Su-35-1 or MIG-35. The basic design of European cars are rooted in the 1980's, when the Soviet Union completed the work on Su-27C.

Fighter aircraft Eurofighter, and Gripen NG will be armed with missiles Meteor ramjet. This will allow them to gain some advantage in the long-range combat, but only until a similar Russian missile RMA-AE-PD extended range are received in serial production.

Hard to say which of the European fighter more competitive, because none of them was able to make great strides in the global market. In general, Western countries do not care to investing sufficient funds in the replacement parks fighter of the cold war era.

With regard to Russian aircraft, the Su-35-1 is the best export potential as compared to the MiG-35, as most potential customers are in Asia, but for large distances need a big plane with a wide range. Radar and optics used in the construction of these aircraft, largely identical to the European one. Airborne radar with active phased array in the European and Russian planes are similar, but lagged behind the American.

PAK FA, if the design is successful, can achieve great success in the global market, while the F-35 - this is a technical error. Western countries, if they can not buy F-22, will certainly be faced with this strategic issue.

Lenta.ru: You carefully analyze the achievement of the Russian defense industry and, perhaps, you can assess its current state. In your opinion, what are the advantages and disadvantages of the Russian voenproma? Is Russia in this regard to be independent from the former Soviet republics, an enterprise which in Soviet times were closely related to Russian?

Dr. Kopp: It is the right question. In Soviet times the military industry had no shortage of public funding from the USSR and the Warsaw Pact for the production of deadly weapons on a massive scale. At the same time, it has been denied access to the latest computer technology and high world market. Currently, the opposite situation exists. Russia is not enough funding to the military-industrial complex, and most Warsaw Pact countries became members of NATO and not to buy Russian weapons. But now your voenprom receive unlimited access to modern computers, software, high-frequency electronics and optical chipam in the world market.

I studied the Soviet and Russian military technology over thirty years, which were "soldiers of the Cold War." Since 1991 I have seen this explosion of creativity and innovation. The speed with which the Russian military industry over the West complex computer technologies and utilize them in their development has been remarkable. Russia still has a high professional culture in the engineering decisions and military science.

When the modern professional magazines write about radar systems and missile arms, it makes it better than most similar professional publications in English. During the cold war it was the opposite. Western defense industry has suffered greatly from the brain drain - are often highly skilled engineers and scientists are left to develop computers in Silicon Valley or to engage in finance on Wall Street, as the salary is higher and the risk of losing their jobs less than in the military industry.

Someone will say that the Russian military today confronted with the same - and talented engineers and scientists to leave the country and go to work in Silicon Valley or on Wall Street. However, if a young talented engineer or scientist wants to find work in occupations in Russia, the choices he has in fact not be - it goes to a military research institute or in the defense plant. In the great advantage of Russian military-industrial complex, as compared with Western rivals.

Compared with the period of the Cold War the number of PhDs in physics, engineering and computing, the mathematics in the West declined. It is difficult to retain talented graduates in university laboratories or in the defense industry. Today, talented young people prefer to study at universities in medicine, law or business basis, rather than natural or engineering discipline.

Russian industry, unlike the West, is not afraid to experiment with new ideas and solutions, because the experiments are limited in the West need to finance them from the profits of companies.

The independence of the Russian military industry of former Soviet republics - is also an interesting question. Break relations with Ukraine in 2004-2005 provided a disservice to your military service, since many of the key design offices and businesses remained in the Ukraine. Moreover, many Ukrainian companies were also eliminated or made to compete with Russian, selling spare parts, carrying out repairs and modernization of Soviet-made weapons. Relations between Russia and Ukraine have been difficult even with the king's time, and today Russia pays for it in political terms.

Nevertheless, very few western countries today can claim that their military industry is completely independent of the global market. The Americans are trying to retain independence, but even they now have to buy part of the defense of products abroad, such as computer chips and materials from Japan and China. In the context of globalization is too difficult to rely only on itself.

    Interview conducted Andrei Fyodorov.

VVS Russian Air Force: News #1 Empty Commander outlines future of the Russian Air Force

Post  sepheronx Thu Aug 06, 2009 7:35 am

Rian wrote:MOSCOW, August 5 (RIA Novosti) - New and modernized aircraft will comprise 70% of the Russian Air Force by 2020, the Air Force commander said on Wednesday.

"We expect 70% of the Air Force strength to be new and modernized aircraft by 2020," Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin told reporters.

"The development of the Russian Air Force will be carried out through extensive acquisition of new advanced aircraft and continuing modernization of the existing fleet," he added.

    STRATEGIC AVIATION AND RECONAISSANCE AIRCRAFT

According to Zelin, Tu-95MC Bear and Tu-160 Blackjack bombers, Tu-22M3 Backfire long-range bombers and Il-78 Midas aerial tankers will form the backbone of the Russian strategic aviation in the next decade following extensive modernization.

The bombers, in particular, will be equipped with new targeting and navigation systems, which will enable them, in particular, to use conventional unguided bombs with a very high degree of accuracy - effectively engaging any target within 20 meters.

They will also have their operational range increased and their onboard defense systems significantly upgraded, the general said.

In addition, Zelin said Russia had been developing a fifth-generation strategic bomber which could be used effectively in both conventional and nuclear conflicts.

"The new plane will use a wide selection of high-precision weapons, and will have a whole range of new combat capabilities, allowing it to apply new methods to carrying out deterrence tasks," he said.

Russia will also develop in the near future a number of advanced reconnaissance aircraft including a stratospheric plane capable of avoiding enemy air defenses.

"Ultra-high altitude reconnaissance planes will play a key role in future wars because they will be capable of staying in the air for a long time and conduct reconnaissance operations deep into enemy territory while avoiding hostile air defenses," the Air Force commander said.

    FRONTLINE AVIATION

The frontline aviation is the core of the Russian Air Force and currently comprises MiG-31B Foxhound interceptors, Su-27 Flanker and MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters, Su-24M Fencer fighter-bombers, Su-25 Frogfoot ground attack aircraft, and MiG-25R Foxbat and Su-24MR Fencer-E tactical reconnaissance aircraft.

Zelin said the Air Force will receive in the next decade not only modernized Su-27SM and MiG-29SMT fighters, but also generation 4++ Su-35S Flanker-E and MiG-35C Fulcrum-F fighters.

"The Russian Defense Ministry will start purchasing large numbers of these aircraft at the beginning of the next decade," the general said.

Meanwhile, Russia's fifth-generation multirole fighter is being developed by the Sukhoi aircraft maker, part of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC), along with India's Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), under a preliminary intergovernmental agreement signed in October 2007.

"Flight tests of the [fifth-generation] aircraft are scheduled to start in the second half of 2009, and the aircraft is expected be put into service in the next few years," the commander said.

He also said Su-24 fighter-bombers will soon be replaced by advanced Su-34 Fullback aircraft.

The general reiterated that Russia will start in 2009 the production of the Su-25UBM, a two-seat version of the Su-25SM.

    MILITARY TRANSPORT AVIATION

There are up to 300 transport aircraft in service with the Russian Air Force, including An-12 Cub, An-72 Coaler, An-22 Cock, An-124 Condor and Il-76 Candid planes.

The An-12, An-22, and An-26 planes will be decommissioned in the near future, Zelin said.

The An-26 plane will be replaced by Il-112B light transport aircraft with higher payload capacity and better fuel efficiency.

"The first Il-112 is expected to make its maiden flight in 2011. The Air Force will order over 70 planes of this type," the general said.

The An-12 will be most likely replaced by a medium-haul transport plane jointly-developed by Russia and India, Zelin said.

The plane, with a 20-ton cargo capacity, is expected to go in service with the Russian and Indian air forces in about eight years.

The An-124 and its modernized version, the An-124-100, will remain in service as a strategic heavy airlift transport aircraft. In addition, 12 Il-76 aircraft will be modernized to Il-76MD-90A starting in 2011.

    HELICOPTERS

The existing fleet of Mi-24 Hind attack helicopters will be fully replaced with new-generation Mi-28N Night Hunter and Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters by 2015.

"We have started deliveries of Mi-28N helicopters to combat units [in the North Caucasus military district] and plan to re-equip at least one squadron with these aircraft by the yearend," Zelin said.

"We are also expecting to complete the tests of the Ka-52 helicopter this year," he added.

The Ka-52 is a twin-seat derivative of the Ka-50 Hokum-A attack helicopter, and is designed primarily for reconnaissance and target designation purposes. It is similar to the U.S. AH-64 Apache attack helicopter.

    UAV

The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) will start playing an increasingly important role in future combat. Given their much lower manufacturing and maintenance costs they could form as much as 40% of the Air Force fleet by 2025, Zelin said.

The Air Force will start receiving domestically-developed attack UAVs in 2011.

"Unmanned and manned aircraft will complement one another, and must be able to accomplish a full range of combat missions in regional or local conflicts," the general said.

OK, destined to be changed by the time 2020 hits, but this is awesome. I knew that UAV/UCAV's would work hand in hand with manned aircrafts (cannot get rid of those) and that the TU-22M3 (most likely M4 upgrade) will live on even longer (what a beautiful bird). I can't wait for PAK FA and I hope its introduction will swiftly replace those old SU-27's (even if they are SM upgrade) and Mig-29's.

Although, what is everyone's opinion on the upgrades? Is it worth upgrading some of these old birds? Or should we just let them die off? And what is everyone else view of the UAV's and UCAV's? What rolls specifically should they fill?

In regards to the upgrades, yes it is easily worth the cost. The current inventory fleet has very low flight hours on the frames making them great candidates for upgrade. The Su-27SM upgrade is a fantastic one bringing it up to the Su-30 in capability. The MiG-29SMT upgrade is even more impressive being a major leap for the aerocraft bringing it on par with F-16 Blk 50.

VVS Russian Air Force: News #1 Empty Russia is developing a stratospheric aircraft

Post  Admin Thu Aug 06, 2009 7:33 pm

Russia is developing a stratospheric aircraft, intelligence, air defense for the unattainable

MOSCOW, August 4 - RIA Novosti. Ministry of Defense of Russia in the coming years will create a number of aircraft, intelligence officers, including a fundamentally new - stratospheric, inaccessible to the enemy air defense systems, told a news chief of Air Force (Air Force) Russia, General-Colonel Alexander Zelina.

"A special role for action in the future aviation surveillance systems should play a new class - high-altitude (stratospheric) manned reconnaissance aircraft, with the possibility of long-term presence in the air and able to monitor the zone of fighting in the deep without being logged in the zone air defenses," - noted Zelina.

According to the Chief, this is caused by a "highly dynamic nature of modern warfare, requiring awareness of the enemy."

Zelina added that in the coming years to replace the existing intelligence AVIACOMPLEX will be a number of modern aircraft, intelligence, able to conduct effective intelligence activities "through the entire depth of the front steps and part of long-range aviation."

To equip future aircraft technology will be developed qualitatively new samples on-board intelligence apparatus for various purposes and "ground handling and communicating intelligence," said head.

"At the same time, increasingly important in addressing the challenges of the intelligence will play an unmanned reconnaissance systems" - said Zelina.

He recalled that at the present time, armed with Russia Air Force reconnaissance aircraft are the Su-24MR and MiG-25RB.

"Their number is so far enough" - said Zelina.

But modern war requires awareness of the enemy, that the Russian Air Force has a fundamental need to upgrade intelligence aircraft, entered head.

Ministry of Defense is developing a promising long-range aviation aircraft
    06.08.2009

MOSCOW, August 5 - RIA Novosti. Russian Defense Ministry, along with the modernization of the Air Force facing armed strategic missile Russia is developing a promising set of long-distance air aircraft, which will have a qualitatively new features, said a news-Chief Air Force (Air Force) Russia, General-Colonel Alexander Zelina.

"Russia Ministry of Defense is actively searching for research shaping outlook range aviation aircraft complex (PAK YES)", - said Zelina.

According to a new long-range aviation aircraft will be able to not only significantly more efficient than existing aircraft of the strategic tasks in the conventional and nuclear wars and use the wide range of precision-strike weapons, but also have a set of qualitatively new combat capabilities to implement a new ways to meet the challenges of deterrence. "

This head does not specify what characteristics are factored into the projected plane, and when it is estimated will be developed and entered service.

"At the moment the problem of global containment, along with the forces of strategic missile forces and the maritime strategic nuclear forces is long-distance aircraft, armed with which the attack aircraft systems - the strategic missile Tu-95MS, Tu-160 long-range missile-bombers and Tu-22M3 aircraft tankers Il-78 "- reminded Zelina.

At the same time, he noted that AAPSO new armament, navigation and information and computer equipment facing armed strategic bombers, able to significantly improve their fighting qualities and to extend aircraft life.

Thus, the combat capabilities of strategic missile Tu-95MS improved through modernization of intellectual systems of navigation and flight information.

"The strategic missile-bomber Tu-160, a follower of Tu-95MS, upgraded to work more effectively in the subsonic speeds and at low altitudes, as well as in the supersonic mode, expanding the range of weapons, including through flexible use of conventional (non-nuclear) weapons "- said Zelina

Prospects for the further modernization of Tu-22M3, which has no analogues in the world, according to the Chief, associated with the program on a serious updating of the onboard systems and the addition of precision weapons on the basis of controlled bombs and air-to-surface missiles.

"Modernization of aircraft tankers Il-78 is scheduled to take place in a comprehensive updating of the onboard equipment and refueling in the air, to ensure the global reach of strategic aircraft to perform the tasks in any region of the world," - concluded Zelina.

The proportion of new and upgraded technology in the RF Air Force by 2020 will reach 70% - head
    06.08.2009

MOSCOW, August 4 - RIA Novosti. The Air Force of Russia by 2020 will have 70% of new and upgraded flight technology, the volume of purchases of new aircraft to increase significantly, told journalists on Wednesday, Chief of Air Force Colonel General Alexander Zelina.

"Development of the technical equipment of aircraft the Air Force ... will be based on a significant increase compared with previous years, the purchase of modern aircraft technology and the continuation of works on modernization of the remaining armed ... This is planned that by 2020, consisting of Air Force aviation groups share new and upgraded technology will be not less than 70% - said Zelina.

    Range aviation

According to the Chief, the basis of long-range aviation will remain a strategic missile Tu-95MS, Tu-160, as well as long-distance bombers Tu-22M3 aircraft refuellers and IL-78.

This Zelina stated that "ongoing active research in shaping the perspective of aviation complex range aviation (PAC YES.)

The new aircraft will be able to more effectively than the existing tasks in the "normal" and nuclear war, as well as "have a set of qualitatively new combat capabilities to implement entirely new ways of solving problems of deterrence."

    Front AVIATION

Front air (FA), said head is a major component of the Air Force, in its composition are currently under the MiG-31B fighter aircraft, Su-27, MiG-29, bombers Su-24m, planes, Su-25 attack plane, aircraft reconnaissance MiG-25Р, Su-24R.

In doing so, Zelina said that a vigorous modernization of the aircraft at weapons FA. In particular, in 2008 the first deliveries to troops upgraded fighter-interceptor MiG-31BM.

Work is continuing to modernize and facing armed Air Force fighter jets Su-27 (Su-27cm) and MiG-29 (MiG-29SMT), in which the outflow of 2009 will be slightly re-combatant forces. "

"The decision about acceptance into service in the coming years profoundly modernized, but essentially a new transition to the fifth generation fighter aircraft Su-35s and MiG-35s. In the beginning of the next decade they will start massively purchased the Russian Ministry of Defense," - said head.

Zelina and touched the topic of establishing the planned set of front-line aviation aircraft - PAK FA.

"In the second half of 2009 aircraft (PAK FA) is to flight test and in the coming years, the Air Force will have to adopt the aviation system" - said Zelina.

In addition, according to the Chief, in the short-term almost all parts equipped bombers Su-24, will be re-emerging in the aircraft Su-34.

"It has exhausted its military capability and the Su-25 attack plane.

Upgraded Su-25cm supplied by the combatant forces since 2006 and has the ability to round-the-clock precision application of a controlled weapon, "- said Zelina.

It also agreed to resume from 2009 production of new aircraft Su-25cm in a double variant, called the Su-25UBM added head.

    Military Transport Aviation

Currently, VTA fleet has a long heavy military transport aircraft An-124 and An-22 heavy aircraft IL-76MD, the average An-12 and AN-26 light.

In doing so, the An-22, AN-12 and AN-26 in the coming years will be decommissioned aircraft parts Air Force in connection with end of life.

Zelina said that the AN-26 aircraft will be replaced by the latest light aircraft Il-112V, which compared with its predecessor, will have expanded opportunities for transportation and desantirovaniyu lung samples of armament and military equipment, as well as increased fuel economy.

"The first test aircraft should be a copy made in 2010 and the first flight of the Il-112V parent planned for early 2011. All in the coming period is planned to purchase more than 70 such aircraft for Air Force. Planned massive purchases of aircraft and other types of and armed forces, as well as for aviation and other ministries and departments of Russia ", - said Zelina.

He added that since 2011, will begin production profoundly modernized Il-76MD-90A with the new engines.

"All of these aircraft will be ordered for the Air Force 40. In 2010, the aircraft should be ready for the test," - said Zelina.

According to the Chief, to replace the AN-12 aircraft under development perspective, which is involved in the creation of India.

"The aircraft is designed for intra-and inter-regional transport of troops, cargo, weapons and military equipment of new generation."

    HELICOPTERS

In place of the arms facing the Russian army attack helicopters Mi-24 helicopters are the new generation - the Mi-28N and Ka-52, Zelina said.

"This year it is planned to complete testing of the Ka-52 in its entirety. Already started deliveries of combatant forces helicopter Mi-28N and the end of the year re-scheduled for this type of at least one helicopter squadron," - shared with the reporters head.

In addition, this year begins the installation of the supply of helicopters Ka-52.

Talking about the segment of the training helicopters Zelina said that the first helicopters ANSAT-U (training) will begin in the school already this year.

"According to Ka-60U (training) trials while continuing the supply of school is scheduled to begin in 2011," - he said.

    BPLA

According to Zelina in perspective, as the completion of the transition to the new Air Force aircraft appearance, the proportion of unmanned aircraft systems can take up to 40% of the entire combat aircraft.

Head pointed out that new designs of Unmanned aircraft technology will begin in the army in 2011. This new technology will be able to deal with not only intelligence, but also a number of other combat tasks currently performed by manned military, tactical and long-distance aircraft.

Massive deliveries of the newest Air Force fighter aircraft Russia will begin in the coming years
    06.08.2009

Moscow. August 5. Interfax-AVN - Air Force Russia buy in the coming years, large quantities of multi-purpose fighter Su-generation transition-35s and MiG-35s, told journalists on Wednesday Russia head the Air Force Colonel General Alexander Zelina.

"The decision about acceptance into service in the coming years profoundly modernized, and, indeed, a new transition to the fifth generation fighter aircraft Su-35s and MiG-35s. In the beginning of the next decade they will start massively purchased the Russian Ministry of Defense," - said A. Zelina.

He also said that armed with the front facing the Air Force Aviation Russia MiG-31B fighter aircraft, Su-27, MiG-29 will be a comprehensive modernization. In particular, it upgraded the long-range fighter-interceptor MiG-31B, with an expanded range of altitudes and flight speeds and capable, thanks to a unique airborne radar (BRLS), to act in the absence of information support for ground and air control points.

Advanced range of heights and speeds of flight the MiG-31B is the basis for further enhancing its combat capabilities, especially in regard to its multifunctionality. The unique flight characteristics of aircraft and its BRLS can be successfully used for the effective destruction radioizluchayuschih and radiokontrastnyh ground and surface purposes, air reconnaissance, "- said A. Zelina.

"In 2008, the first deliveries to troops upgraded fighter-interceptor MiG-31BM" - he said.

Head noted that the Air Force Russia has a unique fleet of two front-line fighter jets Su-27 and MiG-29. "The decision to park this character is taken from the condition of minimizing the costs of meeting the challenges fighter aircraft and it is justified in the context of global economic crisis, which affected the economy of Russia", - said the general.

He said the quality of Russian fighter jets such as sverhmanevrennost.

"Elements sverhmanevrennosti successfully exploited the most trained pilots combatant forces the Air Force. In the future, with an appropriate level of" intellectualization "side of them will become as commonplace as a takeoff and landing", - said A. Zelina.

He said that modernization potential fighter Su-27 and MiG-29 is largely implemented in such aircraft as the Su-27sm, and the MiG-29SMT, which are "to the exodus of 2009 will be slightly re-combatant forces."

Thanks! Such beautiful birds the SU-35BM are!

And to the Turk, just an FYI, because it isn't AESA and all that other jaz, does not mean it is worst. Actually, PESA has currently a further reach and greater output (forced output) that would have a better chance of detecting stealth. Difference is that PESA has a higher radar signiture making it a target, but with the proper electronic warfare in the radar, would make it very effective.

Also, Russia has AESA radar in service. Difference is, each plane has different rolls.

BTW, the Mi-28 is so promising. Cannot wait for them to replace those Mi-24's (even if the Hind is a beauty and a legend).

Gr8 video but you don't have any of those except prototypes. When we get S-400 we will shoot them out of the sky over your own borders. Razz

Uhh, how would you get the S-400? It is a Russian design (which you would obviously hate).

I'm sure it is something like Geophysica. If it is going to loiter for hours it isn't going to be supersonic like an SR-71. Personally, I like the idea of stratospheric reconnaissance balloons. Cheap, little logistics, and little matter if you lose it.

How would you control this balloon in the stratosphere? The winds are very powerfull up there.

hmm related to it.. could anyone here told me on VVS's current situation.. from what i heard so far.. VVS pilots are lack of flight hours due to unavailability of aviation fuel.

VVS pilots are now getting 170 hours per year. I am going to be posting the second half of the BBC documentary that illustrates this in the next 48 hours, so stay tuned to my Utube channel.

I just saw that video... it was great that our pilots are getting so much flight time. The forces are really looking good in their new diggs. tongue

    Defense spending stratosphere
    07.08.2009

In the Russian army, a new manned stratospheric flight-scout. In the world there were only two models of this type, but then from the exploration of the stratosphere refused. Experts believe that such aircraft is not needed, and build it there. In the United States intelligence to translate bespilotniki.

In Russia in the coming years will create a new intelligence aircraft. This was on Wednesday told the head Air Force Colonel General Alexander Zelina.

Zelina stated that in the coming years will be a "high-altitude (stratospheric) manned reconnaissance aircraft, with the possibility of long-term presence in the air and able to monitor the zone of fighting in the deep without being logged in the area air defenses."

According to the Chief Air Force, these aircraft must play a special role in the highly modern warfare, requiring awareness of the enemy. " Colonel-General is not specified, nor what will be called the new plane, nor where it will be developed.

In the Soviet Union was created stratospheric aircraft M-17 "Stratosphere." Create it started back in the 60's of last century and the first flight he undertook in December 1977. At the "stratosphere", which was developed in size to them. VM Myasischeva, pilots have set 25 world records in altitude, speed and load. It was built two planes, but in 1987 the project has been minimized, and the stratosphere only civilian aircraft flying F-55 "Geophysics".

Now experimental machine-building plant named VM Myasischeva is in federal ownership, but in the middle of 2010 to join the JSC "United Aircraft Corporation (KLA). Guide EMZ on Wednesday was not available for comment. However, the Deputy Director of the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies, Konstantin Makiyenko sure that the current status of the EMZ named Myasischeva "clearly is not able to develop the plane."

At the time, a need for a M-17 emerged from an American intelligence officer for Lockheed U-2, which first took off in 1955. In May 1960, this aircraft, piloted by Francis Powers was shot down by Sverdlovsk.

However, in the United States, by contrast, tend to abandon the manned intelligence aircraft U-2 by 2011. They will replace the unmanned reconnaissance.

"The whole world's intelligence goes, either in space or in bespilotniki. Manned aircraft reconnaissance, no one does," - confirmed in an interview with Gazete.Ru "Makienko.

In his view, the priorities for the Air Force now must be the maintenance and upgrading of the existing fighter fleet, the purchase of upgraded Su-35 and MiG-35, as well as the development of Unmanned Vehicle. "Air Force head, as always, has shown that it is better to work in" Аншлаге "- said the expert.

Whatever the case, Zelina said, and other changes. According to him, in 2011 in Russia Air Force will begin domestic bespilotniki that may take up to 40% of the entire combat aircraft. Head generally radiated optimism and promised that by 2020 the Air Force will have 70% of new and upgraded flight technology, and the volume of purchases of new aircraft to increase significantly.

Air Force aircraft fleet: the transition to a strategy of technical updates
    10.08.2009

Alexander Zelina, Chief of Air Force of Russia, Colonel-General

A feature of the Air Force of Russia, whose territory is one seventh of Earth's land area, is that they must provide an opportunity to address combat missions in almost all the known range of physiographic and climatic conditions, day and night, in simple and adverse weather conditions. Such a wide range of conditions applying predestinate the need to create a unique Air Force weapons systems.

With regard to aviation, the air component of the Air Force group, it should be noted that in the transition to a new look to retain all of its major constituent parts, including long distance, front, army, special, military-transport aircraft, air transport association, assembly, Armed with a range of unmanned aerial vehicles. In addition, continue and will continue to develop aircraft parts under the Central Government and educational institutions.

An effective solution of tasks assigned to the aircraft the Air Force, largely depends on the composition and condition of aircraft fleet, as well as for its further development. Consequently, the major challenge of transition to a new face will be intense technical re-equipment of the Air Force aviation groups, which are more compact than the existing, but also significantly more effective.

The development of the technical equipment of aircraft the Air Force until 2020, will be based on a significant increase compared with previous years, the purchase of modern aircraft technology and the continuation of works on modernization of the remaining armed with the best of existing aircraft. This is planned that by 2020, aviation group, consisting of the Air Force share of new and upgraded technology will be not less than 70%.

The starting point of intensive re-air on a new Air Force aircraft can be considered in 2009, during which became really the transition from a strategy of maintaining the status of existing fleet through the repair, extension and upgrading of existing aircraft to the strategy of radical technological upgrade the park by purchasing new aircraft.

It's no secret that Air Force aircraft, comprising a major contribution to meeting the challenges of global containment, along with the forces of strategic missile forces and the maritime strategic nuclear forces, making a long-distance aircraft, which are armed with drums AVIACOMPLEX - strategic missile Tu-95MS, Tu-160, long missile, Tu-22M3 bombers and tanker aircraft IL-78.

Strategic missile Tu-95MS - this high-flying aircraft intercontinental-range nuclear cruise missiles at long range flight on board, equipped with smart navigation and information for their flight. In the long run to build its fighting capabilities will come at the expense of the modernization of each of these components through increasing their technical excellence and «intellectualization» information of military use of aviation complex in general.

The strategic missile-bomber Tu-160 is a further development of military-technical complex of Tu-95MS. Its uniqueness is determined by the possibility of using not only low subsonic, and supersonic flight regimes to increase the flexibility of application and operational stability in a wide range of solution conditions of combat missions in a nuclear war. The prospects of further modernization is mainly associated with the building of military characteristics required to solve problems of shock with conventional (non-nuclear) weapons, including precision, through the modernization of BREO and expand the range of weapons.

At the same time being active search studies on the formation of image perspective range aviation aircraft complex (PAK DA), which will be able to not only significantly more efficient than existing aircraft of the strategic tasks in the conventional and nuclear war, to use a wide range of precision-strike weapons, but also possess a qualitatively new set of combat capabilities to implement entirely new ways of solving problems of deterrence.

Long-range Tu-22M3 has no analogues in the world. It is designed to realize the concept of deterring the threat of war and conflict on a regional scale. The high level of performance allows a variety of techniques and tactics with the action on ground and surface objects in a wide range of flight regimes. The prospects of further modernization associated with the program on a serious updating of the onboard systems and precision weapons dovooruzheniyu based managed bombing and missile attack weapons grade «air-to-face». The aircraft tankers provide the global reach of strategic aircraft to perform the tasks in any region of the world. Modernization of aircraft tankers Il-78 is scheduled to take place in a comprehensive upgrade of its onboard equipment and refueling in the air.

The main component of the Air Force to allow the active fighting in the air in adjacent theaters of war, is the aviation front, that is currently the most massive presence of military aircraft such as MiG-31B fighter aircraft, Su-27, MiG-29, bombers Su -24m, planes, Su-25 attack plane, aircraft-reconnaissance MiG-25Р, Su-24R.

For example, a fighter-interceptor MiG-31B, which implemented a number of unique technologies, so far, is the main fighter aircraft aviation aircraft. Absorb the full unique flight performance of its predecessor, the MiG-25, long-range fighter-interceptor MiG-31B has a substantially expanded range of altitudes and flight speeds.

However, the main step forward is the increased range of action and empowerment BRLS to create a custom field with radar operations in the absence of information support for ground and air control points. Extended range of heights and speed of flight is the basis for further enhancing its combat capabilities, and above all, in the direction of its multifunctionality. The unique flight characteristics of aircraft and its BRLS can be successfully used for the effective destruction radioizluchayuschih and radiokontrastnyh ground (surface) targets, conducting aerial reconnaissance. In 2008, the first deliveries to troops upgraded fighter-interceptor MiG-31BM.

Russia Air Force has a unique dvuhsamoletnym front-line fighter fleet of Su-27 and MiG-29. The decision on such a character fleet was taken from the condition of minimizing the costs of meeting the challenges fighter aircraft and it is justified in the context of global economic crisis, which affected the economy of Russia. With the growing role of export supplies of the existence in Russia of two fighters of different classes has significantly expanded the geography of Russian-made fighter aircraft sales abroad.

The original design and aerodynamic scheme of the fighters, traction characteristics of the power plant led to maneuverability in close air combat, which do not have their analogues. This is evidenced by testimonials, not only Russian but also foreign pilots. Airborne equipment and weapons allow them to deal with combat tasks in daytime and at night in simple and adverse weather conditions.

Of course, successful and, in terms of aerodynamic characteristics are not unique in the world, design and aerodynamic aircraft scheme provided an opportunity of upgrading to the realization of such properties as sverhmanevrennost. Demonstration of the properties of the Russian aircraft is the ornament of all the air show, held in recent years. It should be noted that the elements sverhmanevrennosti successfully developed and the most trained pilots of the Air Force combatant forces. In the future, with the appropriate level «intellectualization» side of them will become as commonplace as a takeoff and landing.

The creation of the Su-27 fighters and MiG-29 can be regarded as the highest achievement of Russian aircraft. I would have the technical solutions provided aircraft modernization unique capabilities that are already being implemented in such aircraft as the Su-27cm, and the MiG-29SMT, which to the exodus of 2009 will be slightly re-combatant forces. But in these samples the fate of famous martial fighters is not limited. After careful study of joint specialists Air Force fighters and developers to further enhance their combat capabilities of the decision on adopting in the coming years profoundly modernized, but in fact, a new transition to the fifth generation fighter aircraft Su-35s and MiG-35s. At the beginning of the next decade they will start massively purchased the Russian Ministry of Defense.

Speaking about further development of complex front-line aircraft, it is necessary to say on the future aviation systems tactical aircraft - PAK FA. The development of this complex is currently much attention being paid by the Government of the Russian Federation, the leadership of the Ministry of Defense, Air Force Command, the United Aircraft Corporation. In the second half of 2009, the aircraft went on test flights, and in the coming years, the Air Force will have to adopt air complex, fully embodied the most advanced science and technology.

For PAK FA will be a reality sverhmanevrennost high «intellectualization» side, circular information field, low visibility, vserakursny shelling targets. Among other combat skills PAC FA should be noted such quality as multichannel use of weapons, the possibility of a simultaneous attack of several air targets and ground precision weapons, a powerful set of on-board defense, high efficiency and safety.

Bombers Su-24m from the beginning of this year, replaced by a new multi-intensive stroke plane Su-34. Its creation would substantially expand the range of actions in the ground. The exclusive feature of the aircraft is the possibility of using a wide range of weapons, including high-precision weapons. The ability to virtually the whole range of guided missiles Class «air-to-air» shows its multifunctionality. This feature makes use of SU  34 less dependent on the ability to attract fighters to ensure the action front bombing aircraft. In the short term, almost all the parts are equipped with the Su-24 aircraft, will be re-aircraft Su-34.

Not exhausted its military capability and the Su-25 attack plane. Its further development - the upgraded Su-25cm supplied by the combatant forces in 2006 and has the ability to round-the-clock use of precision-controlled weapons. In addition, aircraft equipped with an effective set of defense, which allows significantly reduce combat losses, primarily from MANPADS and other short-range air defense systems.

It is also a decision on the resumption of production, starting from 2009, new aircraft Su-25cm in a double variant, called the Su-25UBM, which further enhance its combat capabilities through the availability of crew members pilot-operator, specializing in working with the board set of weapons and defense.

The experience of modern warfare shows that the success of military operations depends largely on the quality of intelligence for the troops. TRANSPORT aviation, unlike land-based and space-based intelligence, unique. Only aircraft capable to carry out as soon as possible a detailed exploration of large areas around the clock and in all weathers, while ensuring that the land, sea and air weapons timely and accurate information on the lesion at the depth of engagement. At present, armed with the Air Force has a sufficient number of aircraft, intelligence Su-24MR and MiG-25RB. At the time of their appearance they were unique complexes that are capable to solve all kinds of intelligence tasks. However, highly dynamic nature of modern warfare requires increased awareness of the enemy. In this regard, the Air Force to chart a course for a radical renewal of intelligence aircraft.

In the coming years to replace the existing facilities will be established modern reconnaissance aircraft that can conduct effective surveillance activities at the depth of problem solving and the front part of long-distance aviation.

A special role for the action of aviation intelligence units should play a new class - high-altitude (stratospheric) manned reconnaissance aircraft, with a long time in the air, capable of monitoring the zone of fighting in the deep without being logged in the area air defenses.

To equip future aircraft technology will be developed qualitatively new samples on-board intelligence apparatus for various purposes and surface processing, and communicating intelligence. At the same time, increasingly important in addressing the challenges of the intelligence will play an unmanned reconnaissance systems.

Combat aircraft FA properties will only be fully realized if it is prepared accordingly flying stock. To do this in Russia developed training military aircraft Yak-130, which is currently being tested and at the end of this year will be adopted.

VVS Russian Air Force: News #1 Empty Re: VVS Russian Air Force: News #1

Post  Admin Mon Aug 10, 2009 10:16 pm

It should be noted that the Yak-130 was developed on the concept closest to the combat aircraft. It achieved promising information technology that allows the training of cadets and pilots of the use of all modes of combat aircraft, the use of all available military aircraft means defeat without their actual launches, using simulation techniques.

One of the main components of the Air Force is a Military Transport Aviation (VTA) for the mobility of Armed Forces of Russia and desantirovaniya aircraft landings, landing, transport and special tasks, the daily life of associations VS.

Currently, VTA fleet has a long heavy military transport aircraft An-124 and An-22 heavy aircraft IL-76MD, the average An-12 and AN-26 light. In connection with the expiry dates of service in the coming years, the An-22, AN-12 and AN-26 will be decommissioned aircraft of the Air Force. Needs further updating and fleet of An-124 and IL-76.

In this regard in the coming decade is scheduled to radically update the fleet of military transport aircraft. Some aircraft will be replaced by more modern, will be part of an in-depth modernization.

For example, an AN-124. In general, a modern aviation systems that have no analogues in the world, capable of carrying 100% of equipment and types of weapons the armed forces to be aerotransportirovke. Needs to be updated only on-board equipment of aircraft that are already under way.

Approximately the same situation and with the IL-76MD - the part of such aircraft will be upgrading the onboard equipment and in conjunction with the 2011, will begin production at the Ulyanovsk aviation systems profoundly modernized version of the Il-76MD-90A with new engines, new hull and freight landing equipment. All of these aircraft will be ordered for the Air Force about 40 units. In 2010, the test should be ready for flight test.

In the next two years is scheduled to complete development and begin the purchase of light military transport aircraft Il-112V, which compared with its predecessor, the AN-26 will have expanded opportunities for transportation and desantirovaniyu lung samples of armament and military equipment, high fuel efficiency and lower cost life cycle. The first test aircraft should be a copy made in 2010 and the first flight of the Il-112V parent is scheduled for the beginning of 2011, total in the coming period is planned to purchase more than 70 such aircraft for the Air Force. Planned large-scale purchases of aircraft and for other species and genera of troops, as well as for aircraft of other ministries and departments of Russia.

To replace the AN-12 is the average development perspective PTS, which is involved in the establishment of the Republic of India. The aircraft is designed for intra-and inter-regional transport of troops, cargo, weapons and military equipment to a new generation type of combat vehicles BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles and troops BMD-3. It will also ensure compliance with world standards for fuel economy of aircraft.

Military helicopter aviation at the Air Force military aircraft, intended to address the fire, transportation and landing and for tasks. Currently, the problem of air support units-Service (firing problem) are solved mainly by helicopters type MI-24. In their stead are a new generation of helicopters - Mi-28N and Ka-52. In December 2008, the State Commission signed a certificate of completion of government testing Mi-28N and the implementation of the first phase of tests on the Ka-52.

This year it is planned to complete testing of the Ka-52 in its entirety. Has already begun deliveries of combatant forces helicopter Mi-28N and the end of the year re-scheduled for this type of at least one helicopter squadron. At the same time, based on the successful progress of the tests this year, begin the installation of the supply of helicopters Ka-52.

In class-landing of helicopters continues to re-new family of helicopters MI-8. Updated Mi-8MTV-5 have a substantially improved performance and handling landing opportunities, have an entirely new modern cockpit and could carry out tasks around the clock. Since 2006, the troops before the end of this year will be about 20 helicopters, but only a ten-year period will be implemented fully updated fleet average transportation and landing of helicopters at the Mi-8MTV-5.

Great importance has recently given to the creation of light multipurpose helicopter. These helicopters will be the basis for the establishment on the basis of special-purpose helicopters for the benefit of species and genera of troops (training, transport, intelligence, medical and other). Currently, two types of helicopters in this class - the Ka-60 and ANSAT differing weights of the goods carried (the first with a payload capacity of up to 2300 kg, second - up to 1000 kg). Both aircraft are designed, first and foremost in the form trainer aircraft for the early commencement of supply in the Krasnodar VVAUL. As the helicopter ANSAT-At the end of 2008, signed a certificate of completion of government testing, and the first helicopters will arrive at school already this year. By Ka-60U test while continuing the supply of school is scheduled to begin in 2011

A special place in the Air Force weapons systems in the future should take a complex with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Currently, there are various Air Force weapons systems the first generation, it's up to the intelligence problem at the tactical and operational depth. During the operation of these complexes in the Air Force has accumulated great experience in their application to take the next step for the development of this direction.

In the process of transition to a new image of the Air Force planned a series of intensive activities to create a new Unmanned aircraft, which will come in troops to 2011, and will be able to deal with not only intelligence, but also a number of other combat tasks currently performed by manned army, the front and long-distance aircraft. In the future, as the completion of the transition to the new Air Force aircraft appearance, the proportion of unmanned aircraft systems can take up to 40% of the entire combat aircraft.

In the interim result, we can state that the current state of technical equipment of the Air Force aircraft allows it to successfully tackle the challenges. In the future, to developed and modernized samples of aviation equipment will be realized principally new properties to achieve higher efficiency and thus their high export potential. Naturally, the development of aviation technology will be determined by the specific military-political and economic conditions, the results of the reform of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation and the aircraft industry.
