After Belarus & most of Ukraine becomes part of the RF, this canal will be even more useful.

Nah... it goes right passed Chernobyl... why would Russia want those hostile parts of the Ukraine to get a waterway there?

Even if they don't get those parts, Novorossia will benefit by using that waterway, as it's shorter than via the Volga-Don Canal.
Truncated Ukraine will still be happy to charge the transit fees..

So Russia subsidises the Ukraine again... nah...

Russia is better off using Russian resources and Russian ports and Russian airfields etc etc, and it needs to stop subsidising its hostile neighbours... especially when they are being belligerently hostile... they shouldn't reward that sort of shit.

It would still cost le$$ than absorbing all of it at once- their economy isn't big enough to do it like W. Germany did with GDR.
Better wait for the situation to stabilize & for the nationalists losing clout, driven abroad, or killed off 1st.
It's also Belarus' problem- recently the border between them was closed to prevent weapons smuggling & other contraband.

Minsk is coordinating further presence of Russian military facilities in Belarus

The current agreements providing for the operation of two Russian centers expire on June 7, 2021, according to official information

MINSK, June 5. /TASS/. The terms of further presence of Russia’s two military facilities in Belarus are in the process of internal coordination. Russia will be notified of the decision in due time, the Belarusian Defense Ministry told TASS on Friday.

"The terms of further presence of Russia’s military facilities in Belarus are in the process of internal coordination. A final decision is to be taken by the Belarusian government. The Russian side will be notified of the decision in a working mode," the Defense Ministry said.

The inter-governmental agreements on the rules of using the 43rd communication center of Russia’s Navy in Vileika, the Minsk Region, and the missile attack warning center Baranovichi, the Brest Region, concluded on January 6, 1995, took effect on June 7, 1996. The agreements were concluded for a period of 25 years. Their term of operation expires on June 7, 2021. Either side is free to discontinue them by presenting a written notification no less than twelve months in advance (by June 6, 2020).

The Baranovichi center in Gantsevichi, the Brest Region, equipped by the Volga radar, began to be built in 1984. After a while the project was mothballed for several years. In 1997 the construction work resumed. The center went operational in 2003.

The Russian Navy’s 43rd communication center in Vileika (radio station Antei) has operated in the Minsk Region since January 1964. It is responsible for maintaining radio communication between the Russian Navy’s Main Staff and nuclear submarines on combat duty in the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Also, the station carries out reconnaissance and radio-electronic warfare.

Sounds like the sort of thing they need to replace with a much more modern and capable system located deep in Russian territory....

They probably have such facilities in Russia already, but keeping them in Belarus gives them an extra pressure point there & an excuse to protect it. Now it's even more useful than ever before.

Some 350 Belarusian servicemen to take part in Kavkaz 2020 military drills in Russia

The Belarusian forces have already arrived at the Kapustin Yar proving ground in Russia’s Astrakhan Region, according to the latest data

MOSCOW, September 15. /TASS/. Belarus has dispatched about 350 servicemen and over 30 tanks to take part in the Kavkaz 2020 (Caucasus 2020) military drills that will take place in Russia between September 21 and 26, Russian Defense Ministry told journalists Tuesday.

"About 350 people, over 30 tanks and armored personnel carriers, as well as six 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers will be involved in the drills from the Belarusian side," the ministry said.

The Belarusian forces have already arrived at the Kapustin Yar proving ground in Russia’s Astrakhan Region.

During the drills, the Belarusian servicemen will practice ground and air defense, deflection of air raids, as well as offensive tactics.

Currently, the Slavic Brotherhood joint Russian-Belarusian drills take place at the Brestsky proving ground in Belarus, involving Russian airborne troops. The drills focus on counter-terrorism activities.

Russia, Belarus to set up joint Air Force and Air Defense combat training center

The center will be used as the base to organize the joint training of the crews of Su-30SM aircraft and train Belarusian specialists in operating advanced surface-to-air missile systems operational in the Russian Armed Forces

MINSK, March 16. /TASS/. A joint Belarusian-Russian combat training center for the Air Force and air defense forces will be set up in Belarus under the agreements reached by the defense ministries of both countries, the Belarusian Defense Ministry announced on Tuesday.

"A joint combat training center for the Air Force and air defense forces is intended to be set up on the territory of the Republic of Belarus. The center will be used as the base to organize the joint training of the crews of Su-30SM aircraft, train Belarusian specialists in operating advanced surface-to-air missile systems operational in the Russian Armed Forces and also to jointly accomplish combat training tasks," the ministry said in its Telegram channel.

Minsk believes that the center’s work will help considerably raise the level of specialist training and train units of both the Air Force and air defense forces of Belarus and the Aerospace Force of Russia and strengthen the practical component of developing the Russia-Belarus Union State’s joint regional air defense system.

At their talks in Moscow on March 5, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and his Belarusian counterpart Viktor Khrenin made a decision that the joint combat training center on the territory of Belarus would be established in the Grodno Region. Two more joint centers will be set up in the Nizhny Novgorod and Kaliningrad Regions on the territory of Russia.

One of the joint centers will focus on the joint training of the ground forces, the Belarusian Defense Ministry informed.

"It will train motorized infantry and tank units of the states using the techniques based on the combat experience of the Russian Armed Forces," the ministry’s press office noted.

The joint training will help practice at a new level the elements of inter-operability of Belarusian military units with the regional grouping of the Russian Army’s forces and as a result boost the efficiency of its use, it said.

Russia and Belarus also defined the expediency of setting up a combat training center in the Kaliningrad Region based on the Western Military District’s Baltic Fleet, the ministry informed.

"This work will allow training Belarusian units on the premises of the Russian marine infantry’s military formations armed with BTR-82A armored personnel carriers," the ministry explained.

BTR-82A armored personnel carriers will arrive for the Belarusian armed forces this year, it said.

The center will also help use modern equipment for Belarusian specialists’ diver training, the Belarusian Defense Ministry said.

I suppose it makes sense with the budget Belarus has to upgrade what it already has. Although the range isn't great still packs a punch. Always surprised that the 2S3 saw very little export sales, maybe in the late 80's and early 90's as the range was not great, but it was a decent system in late 60's and throughout the 70's.

It is highly mobile... but with modern C4IRSTAR behind it it can be as useful as any other system for delivering 40kg bombs.

Shoot and move.... the upgraded versions don't need to line up in a row to fire and can operate independently yet still work together on targets.
