Ka-52 in Russian Air Force - Page 12 Empty Re: Ka-52 in Russian Air Force

The article was in a German military magazine called Mil Tech.. (this is their website: http://www.monch.com/mpg/index.php )

I will see if I can dig the magazine out and give more details... it described the double layer armour of the Ka-50 as making impact of projectiles needing some 2,000 joules of energy... which meant US 20mm cannon was insufficient... you needed a 27mm Mauser or 30mm Soviet calibre to reliably penetrate.

BTW they were testing armour protection... which requires live fire tests... they would not have fitted the aircraft with sensors and equipment so it would not cost anywhere near 16 million.

Could it be "military technology ISSUES 6/2013" since it is the only magazine that mentions russian helicopters in the contents?

Ka-52 in Russian Air Force - Page 12 Empty Any figures about Ka-52 curved transparency armor?

Post  GarryB Wed Jan 08, 2014 8:46 am

    No.

The issue was from the mid to early 1990s and mentioned the name Werewolf for the Ka-50 as being very appropriate as the author calculated the power needed to penetrated its armour required 27mm or more powerful ammo... ie you really need silver bullets for a reliable kill.

Found it... here is the article:

Note page 66 under the heading "Hokum Test Firing" and below.

Note a single 23mm cannon shell would not blow the tail off, but a burst from 100m range would.

About 150 Ka-52 Alligator combat helicopters will be delivered to Russian Ministry of Defense during the period until 2020

146 Ka-52 Alligator combat helicopters will be delivered to Russian Ministry of Defense by Progress Arsenyev Aviation Company during the period until 2020, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to the Deputy Minister of Defense, Yuri Borisov.

"The enterprise’s financial situation is stable and it has a long-term contract for delivery of 146 Ka-52 Alligator helicopters. The deliveries must be completed by 2020. It is also planned to place an order for 32 ship-based helicopters of the type", — he said. The Deputy Minister noted that the Russian navy is waiting for Ka-52K helicopters, which will be deployed onboard Mistral helicopter carriers.

Yuri Borisov visited Primorye in order to monitor the implementation of a number of contracts signed in the network of State Defense Order and to assess the capabilities of defense enterprises. During the meeting with the enterprise’s management team a new contract for delivery of Ka-52K helicopters in 2015-2016 was being discussed, the ministry’s press-service reports.

"Special attention was paid to phasing out imports; in particular, this refers to Ukrainian-produced components. There are no critical problems and we will be able to handle it", - Borisov said.

Ka-52 Alligator combat helicopter is fitted with state-of-the-art avionics and powerful weapons, which may be configured for different missions.

I purchased yesterday an ebook of all or at least alot of russian optronic and electro-optronic technologies.
The book is great from optics for rifles, laser rangefinder and designators for infantry, tank optics/TIS, heliborne (which i mainly was interested but little bit disappointed since TOR Zenit is not published or kept secret), jetborne IRST, targeting pods, targeting sights to spy plane high resolution spy cameras and even space Laser based data transmitting laser, high telescopes for satellites, MAWS for aircrafts and tons of other stuff like this the Image Processing for Surveillance/Attack and Commanding aircrafts aka what the Ka-50/52 have.

The Image Processor was initially installed on the Ka-50 because the Radar was not ready and to ease the workload for combat, reconnaisance missions for single seater Ka-50 pilots it was installed so the Shkval-V could have a Search and track function similiar to a Radar but in the light spectrum. The Image Processor can recognize artificial lines like roads, or straight lines like on vehicles/tanks,bridges or buildings and it is a Subsystem of the T-90MS that was seen that it can even autotrack and lockon on each Window on a building for rapid and accurate gun and ATGM fire through the windows.

It should be "Russia's arms and Technology XXI Encyclopedia Vol 11 Optoelectronics and Laser Systems" By Nikolai Spassky.

I wonder if it's newer edition... I have that book, but it's 2005 edition. Quite outdated perhaps.

16 Ka-52 Helicopter Gunships to Join Russian Air Force in 2015

The Russian Air Force is set to take delivery of 146 Ka-52 helicopter gunships before 2020, the Russian Deputy Defense Minister said on Monday.

Sixteen multirole Kamov Ka-52 helicopters will be handed over to the Russian military before the end of this year, Yuri Borisov told RIA Novosti news agency on Monday.

"This year we are slated to receive sixteen Ka-52s,” Borisov said after a visit to the Progress plant in Arsenyev, 160 km from Vladivostok.

The plant’s director, Yuri Denisenko, for his part, pledged to complete all the 146 ordered aircraft before the 2020 deadline.

The Ka-52 Alligator is a next-generation reconnaissance and combat helicopter designed to destroy tanks, armored and non-armored ground targets, enemy troops and helicopters both on the front line and in the tactical reserves.

The helicopter can operate around the clock and in all weather conditions.

If they plan to build 100 a year that means two years of work... millions of dollars invested in factory production space and tooling and materials and of course training workers to build 100 aircraft per year and after two years when you have 200 aircraft you have no new production orders so those workers are fired and millions of dollars worth of factories are sitting idle with no work.

Makes rather more sense to produce less over a longer period to keep fewer people in work for a much longer period.

"The pilot helicopter, equipped with modern target detection and identification gear, has successfully undergone state trials. It is capable of detecting and tracking submerged and surface targets, engaging them with onboard weapons or communicating the obtained data to the fleet.

“Successful modernization of the Ka-27 enables us to offer similar upgrades of the Ka-28 export units currently in use abroad, or offer our foreign buyers the very latest, expanded, version of this helicopter,” the company press service said.
