Construction of 2nd Adm. Gorshkov class frigate to start in 2009
    RIA Novosti

16:3624/06/2009 ST. PETERSBURG, June 24 (RIA Novosti) - The construction of a second Admiral Gorshkov class frigate will begin this year in St. Petersburg, Russian Navy Commander Adm. Vladimir Vysotsky said on Wednesday.

The first Admiral Gorshkov class vessel is being built at the St. Petersburg-based Severnaya Verf shipyard, and will be launched in 2011.

"We will start construction of the second frigate at this shipyard in addition to existing orders under the state arms procurement program," Vysotsky said at the opening of the International Naval Show in St. Petersburg.

Severnaya Verf started building the Admiral Sergei Gorshkov frigate - the first in the series - in February 2006. According to military sources, Russia's Navy intends to procure up to 20 such vessels.

The frigate has a displacement of about 4,500 metric tons, a length of over 130 meters (430 feet), a maximum width of 16 meters (51 feet), and a range of over 4,000 miles.

The main weapons of the ship are reported to include eight SS-NX-26 Yakhont anti-ship cruise missiles, a new 130-mm gun mount, a Medvedka-2 ASW system, and a Hurricane medium-range air defense missile system.

"We intend to sharply increase the construction of ships of the main classes, and we have already taken the first steps in this direction," the admiral said.

However, the Navy commander said Russia could order a number of warships abroad.

"We do not rule out the possibility of buying foreign-made vessels," he said in answer to a reporter's question.

Russia has not purchased warships abroad since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Russia floats out first of new class of frigate

Russia's first Project 22350 frigate was floated out at the Severnaya Verf shipyard in St. Petersburg on Friday.

The Admiral Gorshkov frigate will be able to execute long-range strike, anti-submarine and escort missions in remote areas.

However, it will be some time yet before it enters service because the ship is only 40% complete, officials said.

The next Gorshkov-class frigate, the Admiral Kasatonov, is under construction and expected to be launched in 2012.

The Russian Navy will receive up to 10 new ocean-going frigates in the next 10 years, a Defense Ministry source said.

The Russian Navy needs between 20 and 30 such frigates, which will be the 21st century's main ocean-going surface ship.

The Admiral Gorshkov has a displacement of 4,500 tons, a speed of 29 knots, a range of 4000 nm at 14 knots, and endurance of 15 days.

It has a crew of 210 and an assortment of weaponry, including a 130 mm A-192 gun, a Kashtan close-in weapon system (CIWS), eight Oniks 3M55 (SS-N-26) anti-ship missiles, the Shtil I (SA-N-12 "Grizzly") medium range antiaircraft missile complex, four 533mm torpedo tubes, RPK-9 Medvedka-VE (SS-N-29) anti-submarine rockets, and 24 Uragan SAM missiles.

It also carries a Ka-27 or Ka-32 helicopter.

It hasn't been fitted out yet, but its weapons should be the same as listed. My only question is if the Shtil will be VLS or mounted.

Looks like we are in luck... Smile

the Shtil I (SA-N-12 "Grizzly") medium range antiaircraft missile complex,

    AND

    24 Uragan SAM missiles.

I think the 24 Uragan SAMs come as part of the Shtil-1 missile complex... Smile

I have read speculation that the vessel will have the Poliment radar and the Redut missiles that were developed with them.

If it does have Shtil-1 then it will be the vertical launch bin version.

Shtil-1 is the name of the system I think.

Uragan is the name of the missile.

I would expect that the vertical launch system for Uragan would be cheaper and simpler than a single arm launcher and also offer advantages in rate of fire and ready to fire rounds etc.

The sam system will be Redut and not Shtil.

If Gorshkov ever get's exported it may feature Shtil in vls form but that's a big maybe since the shtil vls is only on paper.

Your expectations would be wrong. Launch tubes costs millions of dollars.

Arm launchers are not cheaper, and cost more in maintainence and lower performance.

From a fault perspective a failure of an arm launcher means the whole system is useless.

A fault in a VLS means perhaps one missile will fail.

If they are going to be consistent with their demands for new stuff that is better then there is no point going back to the arm launcher if the VLS launcher is operational.

Another advantage of the VLS launcher is that it can be loaded as a block on the Pier which also means it can change armament rapidly too.

On a second thought it looks identical to MFMTR X-band radar seen on Vityaz SAM

    http://www.dtig.org/docs/MSAM-MRADS-Vityaz.pdf

It could be the FCR radar for Redut-K system.

So the are going for navalized S-400 in VLS. Excellent.

Now the main question is numbers. I doubt they would put AESA radar/9M96 missiles for anything less than 48.

And another one ... can we hope to see onboard Gorskhov 48N6/40N6 or do we have to wait for destroyer for it.

40N6 or 48N6 is a big missile ,we will see the smaller 9m96 on Gorshkov , the big missile will be on the new destroyer or even the new Cruiser that they are retrofitting to put into operational service.

How much exactly does the 40N6 weigh? I personally think the S-400 is a great system and it's 400 km range will be just the better for a Naval situation.

Unfortunately, Wikipedia isn't that helpful, and does not list the weight of the 40N6, but due to the Russian's trend of creasing missile weight while increasing performance, I might bet that it's lower than 420 kg, which is the weight of the 9M96E2.

    No and no...

Gorshkov has 3D Fregat radar so not capable of using any Triumf missiles. Nor does it have the depth to use anything other than the 9M96 from S-400. It will require bigger ships to use such a system and there are none on the board that we know of.
