Ergo , the Juan Carlos I is a better ship both in terms of Performance and Capability .
The difference is not large and the main feature of the Juan Carlos I is irrelevant to Russia because they don't have and dont need VSTOL aircraft.

In terms of a pure helicopter carrier the Mistral is what Russia wants to support Russian Naval Infantry operations.

Don't forget, part of the reason Russia went French was their shipyard experience that Russia deemed useful, as well as network command and control systems (Zenit or whatever).

These factors are probably more important than actual ship specifics.

Nice. The half of the Sevastopol, @ Baltisky.

And the sister ship is out and about.
Gotta say I have a feeling the defensive armament is going to suck, though not quite as suck as the French one.

Has teh armament been installed yet? When do they plan to test land helos aboard this thing? Has the russian navy decided whether to put navalised pantsyrs on the mistral or will it be just crappy duets and palash?

Even if it had one Duet and one Palash it would still be far better armed than the original vessel which had a turret launcher for the Mistral MANPAD... the French equivalent of Gibka, and 12.7mm HMG mountings.

In comparison Duet with two 30mm gatling guns and Palash with 8 SOSNA laser beam riding missiles and two more 30mm gatlings is a powerful setup.

AFAIK they will be fitting it with Pantsir-S1 and Redut VLS...

I think it will just have Gibka and Ak-630.
Pantsir is zero chance, no naval variant exists yet, or in close future.
Duet would be nice, but the renders just had Ak-630.

Crappy by Russian standards, but not quite as crappy as the French ones.

Paris will consider canceling a 1.4-billion-euro deal to deliver two Mistral-class warships to the Russian Navy if Moscow provokes further escalation in Ukraine, the French foreign minister has said.

Well well, will France really go through with this, where does it leave russia? Buying somewhere else takes time and building one of its own even longer.

Not only that. In case the French cancel the deal, they will have to pay a huge cancellation penalty.

Really hope they cancel that sale.. Russia dont need mistrals..

Russia could take that money instead saved and build a brand new stealth Cruiser warship..
With S-500 defenses +pansir + Kaliber missiles and 2 helicopter pads. for 3-4 helicopters.

And they get stuck with two Largely Complete carriers that may not be compatible with their helicopters...

But I think the situation will stabilise... Crimea will return to Russia, the coup leaders in Ukraine will eventually allow a vote and will of course be immediately be voted out and cooler heads will prevail.

Honestly i don't believe is such kind of miracles.. French will bark but no way they will cancel such order..

With the money ..that Russia can save.. they could easily create 2 new ,stealth Cruisers with capabilities for up to 4 helicopters each.

1)Cruiser #1 stealth super cruiser defensive warship.
    100x S-500s missiles  and 400 x S-400s and 100 x Kalibers missiles , Pantisr naval version..
Later call the warship CAtherine the Great..

2)Cruiser #2  Stealth Super Cruiser offensive warship.
    150x Tor-M2. +400x Kalibers + 12 Iskander-M missiles + 4xSmerch tube rockets.
Later call the warship.. Ivan the terrible.

Both ship operate in pairs ..and have a Pair of them in every most important naval base.
One in black sea ,another in Baltic .

we can hope no? Very Happy
