Police clash with opposition in Podgorica; parliament deputies injured

BELGRADE, October 17 /TASS/. Police in Montenegro cracked down on protesters in the center of the republic’s capital of Podgorica with tear gas and percussion grenades on Saturday night.

According to Radio and Television of Montenegro (RTCG), police used tear gas and percussion grenades to prevent protesters from Montenegro’s Democratic Front to break police cordons set up outside the Montenegrin parliament. The city center is totally blocked. Branko Radulovic, the parliament’s vice-speaker, and Deputy Nebojsa Medojevic have been injured.

The Democratic Front demonstrators took part in a protest march against the policy of Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic, including his plans to join NATO, on Saturday after police had bulldozed a tent camp, which the protesters set up outside the parliament building 20 days ago. Witnesses said the police had brutally beaten the demonstrators and arrested several people. According to the protests’ organizers, Premier Milo Djukanovic a personal order to crack down on the camp.

Nebojsa Medojevic, a member of the Democratic Party’s governing board, said that his party had gathered evidence of numerous election rigging and claimed that the Djukanovic-led government was, therefore, illegitimate.

"We want the Djukanovic regime to fall and an interim government formed. We want the first honest and fair elections to take place for the first time in 26 years. Our country is in deep economic and political crisis. We suggest a civilized way out of this situation," Medojevic stressed.

The Russian Foreign Ministry also commented on the tent camp crackdown in Podgorica on Saturday. "There is an impression that the purpose of Montenegro’s accelerated movement towards NATO simultaneously implies the suppression of alternative approaches," the ministry said.

"The latest events in Podgorica are regretful. We have stressed it many times that Russia is interested in stable and prosperous Montenegro. At the same time, it is impossible not to see that despite all assurances, which the Montenegrin leadership is receiving from Western countries, the country’s inclusion in the Euro-Atlantic structures is not leading to its consolidation and prosperity. On the contrary, it has polarized the /Montenegrin/ society both politically and ideologically and has aggravated social and economic problems," the Russian Foreign Ministry stressed.

Montenegro Leader Accuses Russia of Supporting Opposition in His Country

Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic said he believes Russia was supporting the Montenegrin opposition because it wanted to stop the country’s NATO integration.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – Montenegro has seen several protests in recent days, with demonstrators demanding Djukanovic’s resignation over election fraud and corruption. After the protests were dispersed, the Russian Foreign Ministry called the anti-free speech actions regrettable, and said it seemed as if an expedited NATO accession by the country envisaged closing the door to alternative approaches.

"There are no doubts after two messages of the Russian Foreign Ministry that the Russian politics is on the side of the protest organizers," Djukanovic told Bosnian federal television in an interview late Wednesday.

According to the prime minister, Russia wants to stop not only Montenegro’s accession to NATO, but that of other Balkan states as well.

"The cessation of NATO’s expansion in the Balkans is an official aim of Russia’s state policy," the prime minister said.

Earlier this month, the United States announced that it was prepared to extend an invitation to Montenegro to join NATO in December. The US suggested the offer during a meeting of NATO foreign ministers, but provided a caveat that the country must continue to implement reforms and work to increase popular support for membership in the military alliance.

Russia has expressed concern over NATO’s growing military presence in Eastern Europe, warning that it could be a threat to regional and global stability.

Tens of Thousands Sign Petition in Montenegro on NATO Accession Referendum

Tens of thousands of Montenegrin residents signed a petition urging the government to hold a national referendum on the country's NATO membership, Srdan Milic, the leader of the Socialist People's Party (SPP), said Saturday.

BELGRADE (Sputnik) — Under Montenegrin law, a national referendum may be held at the president or government’s initiative, a demand from 25 lawmakers of the Montenegrin parliament, as well as a request filed by 10 percent of registered voters, or 52,806 Montenegrin citizens.

"We collected tens of thousands of signatures in 27 SPP offices across Montenegro. Due to the huge interest of the citizens, we will continue efforts to collect signatures calling for a referendum on Montenegro’s NATO membership," Milic told RIA Novosti.

NATO issued a formal invitation to join the military bloc to Montenegro on December 2, which Podgorica accepted the following day.

The decision triggered protests in the capital, with some 5,000 opponents taking to the streets. The protesters have called for Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic's resignation.

Serbs in Montenegro are like negros in US in 50s. Its okay, we recognise you, but we dont care what you have to say. You need to be aware that its not uncommon that two brothers stopped their relationshps due to one claiming to be Serb and other Montenegrin.

US Senate votes overwhelmingly in favor of Montenegro’s accession to NATO

The only two "no" votes came from Republican Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee

WASHINGTON, March 29. /TASS/. The US Senate ratified the protocol on Montenegro’s accession to NATO on Tuesday with 97 votes in favor and two against.

The only two "no" votes came from Republican Senators Rand Paul and Mike Lee. Paul delayed the vote for months by refusing to allow a quick vote, proposed by John McCain.

Paul argued during a Senate session Monday that Montenegro’s NATO membership will not improve the security of the United States, but, on the contrary, will oblige Washington to intervene militarily in case of a conflict.

"There is no national security interest that an alliance with Montenegro will advance," Paul said Monday. "Most Americans couldn't find Montenegro on a map. Are you willing to send your kids there to fight?"

McCain responded by alleging that the senator from Kentucky is "now working for (Russian President) Vladimir Putin."

Moscow has repeatedly expressed its concern over the eastward expansion of NATO. "The NATO expansion has led to the unprecedented in recent 30 years level of tensions in Europe. Judging by certain statements at the Munich Conference, the cold war is still not over," Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov told the Munich Security Conference on February 18.

Montenegro received the NATO membership action plan during the 2009 summit of the alliance. Negotiations began the following year. On May 19, the foreign ministers of the 28 NATO member-countries signed the protocol on Montenegro’s accession to NATO, after which it was granted an observer status. Once this document is ratified by all member states, the country will automatically become the alliance’s 29th member.

To date, the protocol was ratified by 24 out of 28 NATO members.

A part of them doesn't want, the other wants. It's a good thing they become a member I think as the geopolitical situation isn't stable in this region. The Kosovo issue isn't solved, Albanian extremists want the Big albania which consist of taking Kosovo a part of montenegro and macedonia.

Their adhesion to Nato won't change the military balance between russia and nato and Montenegro wants nice relation wth russians as they invest lot in the country.

For exemple if Greece and Turkey were not in nato, there would have been a big war between them since long ago.

They do have elections but beside strong nationalist feelings Milo encourages in his voters (since they are not Serbs anymore apparently but Montenegrins), he uses big piles of money to buy out voters, he pays electricity for those that vote for him that are in debts lets say, gives state funded jobs, provides funding for their startups etc, etc, etc.

Serbs are becoming second rate citizens in Montenegro, even tho Montenegrins are basically just Serbs that lived in that region for centuries, we even have saying in Serbia that Montenegro is Serbian Sparta, because that area was never fully under control of Ottomans.
