That's a great list! Though of course, it begs some questions.

How was the list made? Which information source did the author use to assemble the list? Was it made using a variety of multiple sources, like blogs, news sites and so on?

How undermanned are those units listed?
If one uses roughly 11 000 troops per division, 4000 troops per brigade, 1700 per regiment and 500 per BARS unit -one gets over 555 000 troops in total.

The list itself mentions total number of troops as well, which total some 442 000+
Does that mean units are generally undermanned (Which would be perfectly to be expected in a war) and the list acknowledges that? And if so, does it use the same rule of thumb percentage to account for the undermanned factor for all the units?
Or does the list presume all units are fully manned and simply works with fewer troops per unit?

Multiple sources from both sides and the middle over months. Usually try to have several reportings to put them on my tracking list. Went back and checked, started collecting this data since February '23. However I would never claim it to be 100%... only the Russian MoD could do that.

My general rule of thumb for Regular Russian forces would be 2/3 manned. This is based on the fact that conscripts are left out of the SVO at their home base plus the Officers and contract soldiers involved in their training and support plus normal casualties. Due to the fact that support troops have to be factored in I calculate a MR division to have 12,000 (so 8,000 in the SVO) and a MR brigade at 4,500 (so 3,000 in the SVO). Also have a formula for other combat units. Those totals are mine based on the 2 new Divisions and 2 new brigades mostly being in the SVO (all have some units there but not sure if the complete total is there). The Ukrainians are claiming Russian now has 425-450,000 troops in the zone so pretty close. Again not 100% but comfortable in range. Hope this helps you.

They are the mobilized Reserves. Most of them would be in the Reservist units or Territorial as they are called. Some in support and others filling in slots of the regular units.

That's news to me that conscripts serve only in their home bases. I thought that, as long as they serve within Russian territory, they can be moved around.
And since new territory has been added, I figured conscripts from all Russia serve in Crimea, Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk regions. That is not the case?

Even if that's not the case, conscripts which do reside in said regions should be serving within their units there?

Or do conscripts simply do not come even close to frontline service anywhere, in any capacity?

Anyway, thanks for your work and effort.

Anyway, thanks for your work and effort.

No conscripts allowed in the SVO period including those from Kherson, Zaporizhia, Donetsk and Luhansk regions. They can however serve in Crimea.

No conscripts allowed to serve outside of Russian Federation borders (Armenia, Syria, Georgia or Central Asia)

Conscripts can only be allowed if there was a declared war but not a "Special Military Operation".

NOTE: Including this also to help with the "bigger picture" (Update from an Ukrainian blogger on the suspected Rosgvardiya units in the SVO):

At the moment, as part of the "United Grouping of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the South-Western Theater of Operations", there is a corresponding grouping of troops (forces) of the Federal Service of the National Guard of the Russian Federation ("Rossgvardiya").

    It counts...

    - personnel (l \ s) – up to 24.4 thousand servicemen of the NG RF troops and police officers
    - armored combat vehicles (including armored vehicles) - up to 530 units
    - artillery systems \AS (of different caliber) - 212
    - helicopters – 18

    In particular...

    1) GV "Vostok"
    - l\s - 7119
    - BBM – 181
    - AC – 64
    - helicopters – 6

    2) GV "West"
    - l\s - 6815
    - BBM – 143
    - AC – 42
    - helicopters – 6

    3) GV "Yug"
    - l\s - 10481
    - BBM – 206
    - AC – 106
    - helicopters – 6

All this punitive "splendor" is reduced to..

    - battalion tactical groups (BTGr) – 5
    - simply, "tactical groups" of different kinds and styles - up to 40
    - consolidated divisions of the rospolizia (also of different types) - 111, of which "OMON" - 75, "SOBR" - 35

The main tasks that these punishers "perform" in the occupied Ukrainian territories are as follows...

    - ensuring the regime of martial law in the occupied territories, including the checkpoint regime in the operational rear of the grouping of Russian troops

    - ensuring the organization and conduct of events, the so-called "territorial defense" in the occupied territories

    - so-called "filtration" and "barrier" measures...

And also, a whole bunch of "passing" tasks... starting with the "support of public order", ending with the forceful support of counterintelligence activities of the operational groups...

Post  franco Tue Oct 31, 2023 10:55 am

    Again from an Ukrainian blogger but interesting to see what the Ukrainians believe they are up against in Russian Forces;

    1. As of the morning of 10/29/2023, the grouping of Russian troops deployed on the territory of Ukraine ("The United Grouping of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the South-Western Theater of Operations") numbered, excluding the grouping of the Federal Service of the National Guard of the Russian Federation (fsvng "Rossgvardiya"):

    - personnel – 441.7 thousand military personnel
    - tanks (of all types) – 2324 units
    - armored combat vehicles (BBM), including armored vehicles – 5661 units
    - artillery systems (AS), caliber from 100 mm - 3148 units
    - multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) – 982 units
    - launchers of the operational-tactical missile system (PU OTRK) – at least 46 units

These forces and means are combined into the following formations of all sorts and types of troops:

    - brigades – 60
    - regiments – 137
    - separate battalions – 106
    - consolidated tactical detachments (regiment/battalion level) – 46

    2. In the waters of the Mediterranean, Black, Azov and Caspian Seas, the enemy deployed:

    - warships, boats, support vessels - 116
    - submarines - 4
of them are shock, capable of striking targets and objects on land with guided missile weapons:
    - warships - 22
    - submarines – 3 (1 submarine is under repair)

The conditional total salvo is up to 96 missiles (of all types).

    3. The grouping of operational-tactical and army aviation of the enemy, concentrated for operations in the airspace of Ukraine, as of the evening of 28.10.20123 was...

    - 322 units of combat, special and military transport aviation.
    - 289 helicopters... of these, 123 are shock (helicopters of fire support of troops).

The 1st volunteer reconnaissance and assault brigade “Wolves "originates from the special volunteer battalion tactical group “Wolf", created in February 2022 from veterans of the army special forces of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Federation (GRU). Now, the assault brigade “Wolves " performs operational tasks in different sectors of the front in the zone of the special military operation of Russia in Ukraine. 1-I DRSHBR “Wolves " became the first volunteer unit in Russia, which began to accept veterans of military operations with foreign citizenship. The size of the brigade is about 3 thousand soldiers.

In the zone of Russia's special military operation in Ukraine, the Wolves assault Brigade is part of the First Expeditionary Volunteer Army Corps of the Yug group The Russian Armed Forces are fighting the enemy in the Donetsk and Saledar-Artemivsk directions of the front. The 1st DRSHBR "Wolves“, together with such special volunteer units as the DRSHBR” Nevsky “detachment and the ODSHBR” Veterans“, is part of the PMC” Redut", which is engaged in recruiting recruits under the supervision of Colonel Andrey Troshev, but all military personnel of the brigade sign a contract with the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

    Recruiting

The volunteer assault brigade “Wolves " is recruiting military specialists in the special military operation zone of Russia in Ukraine in such specialties as: UAV operators, attack aircraft, gunners, scouts and sappers. Preliminary training of new fighters takes place at the training grounds of the Luhansk People's Republic of the Russian Federation. Volunteers sign a contract for a period of 6 months.

The brigade recruits fighters aged from 21 to 50 years. For Russian citizens, the presence of a military ID card up to the age of 27 is mandatory. In the recruitment release, which is published on the official channel of the “Wolves " brigade, there is currently no information about the recruitment of foreign citizens. It is more likely that the unit also recruits convicts to its Storm-Z assault squad, but this information is also not included in the official vacancy announcement.

Formation and composition of the team

For the first time, the “Wolves”, as a separate volunteer special purpose unit, appeared in February 2022 near Kiev, with the beginning of the Russian air Defense in Ukraine, and later, the number of units increased to the battle tactical group (BTG). The unit specializes in combat missions related to reconnaissance and sabotage activities and offensive assault operations.

At the stage of the withdrawal of the Russian Armed Forces from Kiev, the “Wolves “covered the withdrawal of the Russian army in their area, and at the end of April 2022, the then BTG” Wolves " were transferred to the Izyum direction of the front in the Kharkiv region.

In the first decade of September 2022, the “Wolves " held back the AFU counteroffensive in the Balakleya area and provided cover on the roads leading to Izyum, as well as held Bogorodichnoye until the last opportunity.

In November 2022, the “Wolves " participated in the clearing of forests to the west of Kremennaya, and also conducted combat work in the area of Ploshchanka in the direction of Makeyevka and in the area of Shipilovka in the direction of Belogorovka.

On February 7, 2023, the “Wolves"received the official status of the 1st volunteer reconnaissance and assault brigade and added a division of 152-mm D-20 howitzers. During this period, the assault brigade “Wolves "together with the international special brigade "Pyatnashka" - fought with the enemy in the Avdiivka direction of the front.

In March 2023, with an active recruitment of volunteers, an additional Uragan battalion was formed as part of the 1st volunteer reconnaissance and assault brigade

In April 2023, the assault brigade “Wolves " was transferred to the north of Artemovsk, where it covered the attack aircraft of the PMC “Wagner”.

In September 2023, war correspondent Yevgeny Lisitsyn spoke about the courage and heroism of the soldiers of the 1st DRSHBR "Wolves" in the Soledar direction of the front.

There is no exact list of units of the 1st DRSHBR, but according to publicly available data, it can be concluded that the brigade consists of three battalions of army special forces, a sniper company, a UAV and electronic warfare company, a Storm-Z assault squad, mortar batteries, a division (or battery) of 152-mm howitzers.-20 and up to 100 BMP-2 light armored vehicles.

NOTE: The volunteer forces have formed Reconnaissance and Assault brigades. Those so far are:
    - 1st Wolves brigade
    - Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky brigade (131st?)
    - 60th Veterans brigade

Other Volunteer units reportedly larger then a battalion (BTg):
    - Cascade
    - Redut

    - Patroit
    - Sever Akhmat

7th Military Base formed from the 131st brigade not regiment.
102nd Military Base was originally formed from the 123rd regiment along with other units of the 127th division (which has now been reformed out East) but it is not the 123rd.
the 70th Division was just reformed with the 24th,26th and 28th regiments, not sure where the 404th comes from. When it disbanded in 1991 it was stationed in Ukraine and it's equipment went to them.

    Updates:

-6th Motor Rifle regiment of the 2nd Army Corps has showed up again after being MIA for several months. Apparently fighting around Spirne / Verkhn'okam'yar area of the Donetsk Direction as reported by several sources. Some sources have it as a brigade and others as a regiment. This was the Cossack unit of the old Luhansk Militia and was famous for fighting with the 141st Regiment ( Chechen's) in taking Severodonetsk and Lysyhansk.
-Several sources reporting a new Motor Rifle brigade (137th) around Holykove. Have some reservations as the new 67th Division deployed near there has a 37th Motor Rifle regiment (the fog of war and all that).
-had listed a 1843rd Motor Rifle regiment in the Kupiansk Direction. Some sources now saying there is a 1483rd Motor Rifle regiment there. Suspect the later would be correct as it was the only 1800 regiment with most being in the 1400's.

Post  franco Wed Dec 06, 2023 1:55 pm

NOTE: again Ukrainian sources but it is known that this reorganization is in process from numerous Russian sources just that they are limited to what they can report. The Russian Military has been getting these volunteer units under command and control. A number of units have been merged and brigades are being formed. Structure and size of both brigades and battalions are all over the place and without doubt a work in progress. Units not covered by the article include the:

    - Redut units (PMC) reportedly under the direct control of the GRU. Classified as a brigade but has various battalions operating in different areas
    - left over Wagner units under contract with the Rosgvardia
    - Z Storm units, generally company size (80-200 men) attached to Regular units as special assault troops (mostly ex Wagner convict units)
    - Akhmat units from Chechnya used as assault troops operating in 1 regiment and several battalions operating in different areas

As part of increasing the level of centralization and effectiveness of combat control, in the so-called "SVO zone", the Russian military command is conducting a significant reorganization of the system of "private" and "volunteer" formations deployed as part of the "United Grouping of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation in the Southwestern Theater of Operations."..

For this purpose, the enemy command formed the so-called "Volunteer Assault Corps" (DShK) in its composition, which brought together the vast majority of "volunteer" formations of the "battalion - brigade" level (conditionally), as well as a number of BARS-type units.

At the moment, the following structure of this DShK is known

    1) Management, headquarters of the DShK

"Brigades"... consolidated types in 2 "divisions" (or whatever they call it, it is not yet known)

    The first ...
    - sabotage and reconnaissance (volunteer?) assault brigade (drshbr) "Terek" (Cossack)
    - drshbr "Siberia" (Cossack)
    - 6th drshbr "Don" (Cossack)
    - drshbr "Dnepr" (Cossack)
    - 1st drshbr "Wolves"
    - 3rd drshbr "Convoy" (reformed from the Rogozin battalion "Royal Wolves") has the status of "Cossack"...

    The second...
    - 7th drshbr "St. George"
    - drshbr "Nevsky"
    - a separate sabotage (volunteer?)-assault brigade (odshbr) "Veterans"
    - odshbr "Hispaniola"
    - odshbr "North - Z"

"Battalions"... separate ones... of various types and styles, from simple rifle \ motorized rifle to "sabotage" and "assault"
    - BARS-8
    - BARS – 16
    - "Storm Ossetia"
    - "Alanya"
    - "Torch"
    - "Stream"
    - "Tigers"
    - "Lynx"
    - "Irbis"
    - "BORZ"

In addition, the composition of the DShK includes:

    - separate artillery brigade (oabr) "Volga" (Cossack)
    - separate reconnaissance battalion (ORVB) "Oskol"

Post  franco Mon Dec 18, 2023 11:13 am

Let's move on through the glorious list of Cossack units in the Northern Military District.
The “Dnepr” brigade consists of the “Ros”, “Laba”, “Khortitsa” detachments,
the “Siberia” brigade with the “Yenisei”, “Irtysh” and “Angara” detachments.
The Volga brigade was assembled by the divisions Listan, Pechora, Mius im. Alexandra Zakharchenko, “Lugan”.
The “Terek” brigade consists of the “Skif”, “Baltika”, “Caspian”, “Terek” detachments, as well as a separate “Oskol” detachment and the “Skali” training center.

In addition, in the Northern Military District zone there is the 6th Separate Guards Motorized Rifle Lisichansk Cossack Brigade named after. M.I. Platov,
as well as battalions of the country's combat army reserve (BARS) - detachments "Ermak", "Fortstad", "Kuban", "Rostov", "Tiger".

Currently, the number of Cossack volunteers is steadily growing, and in the near future the brigades will be replenished with new detachments. The glorious work of our ancestors continued its life in the battles of the special operation, where the descendants of the heroes will more than once confirm the proud title of the Russian Cossack.

Again various sources on both sides but no official Russian government source.

    - A new Rosgvardiya brigade, the 116th Operational Brigade formed in the Donetsk Republic.
    - Made up of 3 OPN's (Operational Purpose Regiments) and a total of around 6,000 servicemen.
    - HQ and 902nd OPN at Chystiakove (about 70 km east of Donetsk City)
    - 901st OPN at Snizhne (Donetsk-Luhansk border, about 90 km southwest of Luhansk City and 10 km east of Chystiakove)
    - 900th OPN at Melekine (about 20 km southwest of Mariupol)

In maybe related news, the Cascade Volunteer brigade which was made up of ex-Ministry of the Interior veterans from the Donetsk and Luhansk Republics has reportedly been disbanded.

The 1st Volunteer Corps of the Russian Guard, formed from fighters of the Wagner PMC, will include three assault detachments. The TG channel “Belarusian Security Forces” writes about this.

To date, PMC "Wagner" does not officially take part in hostilities. Some of the fighters went to units of the Russian Ministry of Defense and are already fighting, while others remained to wait for the decision of the commanders. After Putin signed the law on the creation of volunteer formations as part of the Russian Guard, the formation of three assault detachments began, which will be the “successors” of the company in the special operation.

The 1st Volunteer Corps will have three assault detachments: the 15th, 16th and 17th. The completion period is one month. Each detachment will include 2200 fighters. The terms of the contract will remain the same: Northern Military District - 6 months, Africa - 9. The 17th assault detachment will be a strike detachment, the 16th will also take part in battles, and the 15th will be a reserve.

According to preliminary forecasts, 17 SHOs are planned to be used as strike weapons. 16 SHO will take part in the database together with other units of the Russian Guard, and 15 will become a reserve (...) The symbols and attributes of the 1st Volunteer Corps of the Russian Guard will be changed and will be slightly different from the symbols of the PMC "Wagner"
    - writes TG channel.

The appearance of fighters of the new corps in the Northern Military District zone should be expected in the near future; formation is proceeding at a rapid pace.

So about 6600 total. Not much. Mind you I would wager the other 20K of men already joined with Russian armed forces then.

These guys would be good to have as trainers as well as used in Africa all over.
