Lots of NATO airfields had HAS covered in earth and grass. Although this works as a form of simple camouflage they found that it actually improved the effectiveness of bombs as they couldn't ricochet off in glancing hits. So the earth came off.
Even now they are useful as not every incoming munition would guided and they definitely protect from blast and shrapnel.

The British had some great aircraft back in the day. Both the Canberra and the Buccaneer served in the SAAF for many years. I was still a youngster then but knew many of the pilots who flew them as well.
This picture was taken during the Bush War years at Waterkloof AFB near Pretoria - all out in the open Isos!

While proper spacing would have prevented the loss of that many aircraft, the russians arguably believed there was no need to do it, as it would take unessecary space.
The commander assumed, there was no way Ukraine would be able to pull off such an attack and there is logic to that.
The problem WAS leaving ammo storage so close to the aircraft not the spacing if your fighting a 3rd world country this is fine but in a war like this you cannot do that.
Now you can never stop everything from happening, but you for sure can reduce the occurrences.
A lot of you are missing the key detail here, THEY DID NOT go for the planes but the storage, It was by pure lucky RNG the bombs blew the way they did and landed where they did.
Indeed the Russian commanders made an incompetent choice, they kept easily detonated munitions that close to their aircraft BUT Ukraine simply got lucky with the spread

I am infatuated with British aerospace engineering from the cold war. They sure had some uglies (Javelin, Valiant, even the otherwise impressive Lightning wasn't too pretty).

That is all for doors, already recycled by scrap collectors.
Each wing was about 4-5 tons, depending on a bunker side.
Those bases are scattered among all of Poland, ex-GDR, Chechoslovakia etc.
I have explored half of them in Poland, because I am old already. Had a time

Some of those in GDR, some of them in Czech.
