Venezuela to double number of tanks, boost defenses - Chavez

    Arms contracts with Venezuela 155112059

MOSCOW, July 24 (RIA Novosti) - President Hugo Chavez says Venezuela will at least double the number of tanks in its military and continue strengthening its defense capability, the state-run ABN news agency reported.

"We are going to buy more tanks to have an armored force at least twice the size of what we have today," Chavez said on national television on Thursday.

"We need to strengthen our forces on land, at sea, and in the air and we are going to continue doing that," he added.

The leftist president's announcement comes shortly after neighboring Colombia offered to accommodate more U.S. troops at its air and naval bases, which Chavez said was a serious threat to Venezuela's national security.

The Venezuelan army currently has more than 80 outdated French-made AMX-30 main battle tanks and several dozen AMX-13C light tanks.

Chavez, who has spent billions of dollars on weapons from Russia in recent years, confirmed that Caracas and Moscow were in talks to purchase Russian T-90 main battle tanks among other military equipment.

Between 2005 and 2007 Russia signed 12 contracts worth more than $4.4 billion to supply arms to Venezuela, including fighter jets, helicopters and Kalashnikov assault rifles.

Post  Admin Thu Aug 06, 2009 2:00 pm

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) - Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said at a press conference the country plans to buy weapons and Russian tanks over a possible increase in U.S. military personnel in neighboring Colombia.

    Arms contracts with Venezuela 155741187

Chavez urged U.S. President Barack Obama not to increase the country's military contingent at bases in Colombia and said the move could lead to a war in the region.

"These bases [in Colombia] could become the beginning of a war in South America," Chavez said.

The United States and Colombia are currently holding talks which could see a boost in U.S. troop numbers at Colombian bases as part of a 10-year deal to help the country tackle its drug trafficking and terrorist problem. The U.S. would invest some $5 billion in the South American country's economy.

Venezuela has already spent around $4 billion on Russian arms, including helicopters, fighter planes, and Kalashnikov assault rifles since 2005.

"We plan to buy several battalions of Russian tanks," Chavez said during Wednesday's press conference.

Colombia is the only country on the continent where a powerful guerilla group - the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) - controls a large portion of territory. In the past, it controlled nearly two-thirds of Colombia, but its influence has dwindled by half. Despite its rhetoric, the organization has nothing in common with Che Guevara or Marxism, and is mainly involved in drug trafficking and kidnapping.

Relations between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela have been tense since Colombian troops attacked a FARC camp in Ecuador last year. As many as 24 guerrillas, including a senior commander of the FARC, were killed in the raid.

Arms contracts with Venezuela Empty Venezuela could order T-72 tanks from Russia

Post  sepheronx Thu Aug 06, 2009 4:07 pm

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) - The tanks that Venezuela is planning to buy from Russia could be of the T-72 type, a Russian military analyst said on Thursday.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said at a press conference on Wednesday that the country plans to buy several battalions of Russian tanks in response to a possible increase in U.S. military personnel in neighboring Colombia.

"The tanks in question are most likely the T-72 model, which best fit the needs of the Latin American market," said Konstantin Makiyenko, deputy director of the Center for Strategic Analysis, a Moscow based think tank.

He added that Venezuela could afford even new T-90 tanks, but that due to the low price of oil on current markets, it would be more logical to expect the purchase of the T-72.

The price of a T-90 main battle tank (MBT), manufactured by Russia's Uralvagonzavod plant is $5-7 million, while the price of a T-72 model is $1-2 million, the analyst said.

A Russian tank battalion comprises 31 tanks.

Last year, Uralvagonzavod produced a total of 165 T-90 tanks. Over half of the vehicles were exported, and the remaining tanks replaced some of the T-72s in the Russian Armed Forces.

The analyst said Russia may have enough T-72 tanks available for the sale to Venezuela.

Venezuela has already spent around $4 billion since 2005 on Russian arms, including helicopters, fighter planes, and Kalashnikov assault rifles.

May not be as effective as T-80U or T-90A, but cheap. Given an effective upgrade in both armor and sniper capabilities, could make any T-72 a dangerous tank, even by western standards.

T-72 is outfitted with Svir. They can reach out and touch someone the same as T-90. Venezuela will not able to gain air superiority against the US so anything that advanced would just be target practice unless they get S-400 to go with it.

Air superiority cannot be gained by Venezuela, no. But what can be gained is (yes) a defense from the ground and a strike aircraft to provide defense for ground troops.

Arms contracts with Venezuela Empty Venezuela to get Russian missiles

Post  crod Sat Sep 12, 2009 2:34 pm

Venezuela's President Hugo Chavez has announced that the country will soon take delivery of Russian missiles with a range of 300km (185 miles).

Returning from a 10-day tour of Africa, Asia and Europe, including Russia, Mr Chavez is also planning to buy Russian T-72 and T-90.

"Soon some little rockets are going to be arriving... and they don't fail," he announced at the presidential palace.

But he denied they would be used for offensive purposes.

"We are not going to attack anybody, these are just defence tools, because we are going to defend our country from any threat, wherever it may come from," the president said.

Venezuela is involved in a long-running diplomatic stand-off with neighbouring Colombia, over the latter's plans to allow US troops greater access to its military bases.

Colombia says the US forces will help in the war against drugs and left-wing guerrillas and will not destabilise the region.

Mr Chavez, a fierce opponent of US foreign policy, did not say how many missiles he had ordered.

Russia has been strengthening its ties with several Latin American countries, including Venezuela.

The two countries held joint naval exercises in Venezuelan waters last November.

This is kind of related to the previous article and thread.

Moscow could give Venezuela arms loan - Kremlin aide

MOSCOW, September 9 (RIA Novosti) - Russia could give Venezuela a loan for a new arms contract, a senior Kremlin official said on Wednesday.

The statement came ahead of President Hugo Chavez's meeting with President Dmitry Medvedev in Moscow on Thursday. Chavez has recently announced plans to buy dozens of Russian tanks in response to U.S. plans to deploy military bases in neighboring Colombia.

"We do not rule out a loan for Russian weaponry supplies," Sergei Prikhodko said.

Prikhodko, however, said no new arms contracts would be signed during Chavez's two-day visit, which is part of his 11-day foreign tour.

He said however that a package of around 10 agreements designed to boost cooperation would be signed during the visit. This includes an agreement on the mutual protection of intellectual property rights in military cooperation and an agreement between the two Defense Ministries covering personnel training and military exchanges.

Between 2005 and 2007, Russia signed 12 contracts worth more than $4.4 billion to supply arms to Venezuela, including fighter jets, helicopters and Kalashnikov assault rifles, which raised concerns in Washington.

In the energy sector, a memorandum of understanding on long-term cooperation in developing Venezuela's Orinoco oil belt will also be signed.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin said on Wednesday Russia and Venezuela were discussing Russian oil supplies to refineries owned by the Latin American country's state oil firm PdVSA as part of a joint venture being established by a consortium of major Russian crude producers and PdVSA.

The country's ambassador to Russia, Hugo Jose Garcia Hernandez, said on Tuesday the visit "is designed to reaffirm the strategic level of relations between the two major energy producers."

This will be Chavez's seventh visit to Russia as president. He came to the country twice last year alone. Medvedev visited Venezuela last November, the first visit to the Latin American country by a Russian leader in the more than 150 years they have had diplomatic relations.

Hernandez said that while in Moscow Chavez would also take part in a Russian-Venezuelan business forum and deliver a lecture at a university.

As part of his tour, Chavez has already visited Libya, Algeria, Syria, Iran, Turkmenistan and Belarus.

    Venezuela Buys Rockets from Russia

    By Jessica Golloher
    Moscow
    12 September 2009

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says he has signed an arms deal with Russia for short range missiles.

The missiles have a range of 300 kilometers. The weapons are a part of a series of arms deals with Moscow. Mr. Chavez made the announcement on Friday after returning from a ten-day tour of Africa, Asia and Europe and he insists the weapons are for defense only.

Mr. Chavez says the rockets will arrive in Venezuela soon and he says his country is not going to attack anybody with them. He says the weapons will help defend his country from any threat no matter where it comes from. Venezuela is currently involved in a dispute with neighboring Colombia over that country's agreement with the U.S. to allow American troops access to seven Colombia bases for anti-drug operations.

Moscow says it is willing to sell Venezuela whatever weapons it is willing to buy. Venezuela is currently negotiating the purchase of 100 T-72 and T-90 tanks from Russia.

Russia has already sold the country 24 fighter jets, dozens of helicopters and assault rifles. This after the United States barred the South American country from buying U.S. equipment. In recent years, Venezuela has spent more than $4 billion on Russian weapons.

In addition to the arms deals, President Chavez recently acknowledged the independence of the Russian-supported breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. The U.S. and the European Union consider the areas part of Georgia and have repeatedly asked Russia to respect Georgia's territorial integrity. Nicaragua is the only other country, besides Russia, that recognizes the regions.

Arms contracts with Venezuela Empty Chavez announces $2bn arms deal

Post  crod Mon Sep 14, 2009 6:02 am

The leaders of the two allied states met last week in Moscow
Russia has agreed to lend Venezuela over $2bn (£1.2bn) to buy weapons, President Hugo Chavez has said.

The credit will be used to purchase nearly 100 tanks and a series of anti-aircraft rocket systems from Russia.

In his weekly TV address, Mr Chavez said the weapons were intended to boost Venezuela's defensive capacity.

The deal comes as tensions grow between Venezuela and Colombia over its neighbour's plans to allow the US access to several military bases there.

"The Russian government approved financing of $2.2bn dollars for the cost of the weapons," Mr Chavez said.

He said the anti-aircraft rockets systems would make it difficult to be attacked.

"With these rockets, it is going to be very difficult for them to come and bomb us. If that happens, they should know that we will soon have these systems installed, [and] for an enemy that appears on the horizon, there it goes," he said.

Mr Chavez said that the country's vast reserves of oil and gas demanded military protection.

"We have the largest petroleum reserves in the world. The empire has its sights on them," he said, using a term which he commonly uses to refer to the US.

Over recent years the country has signed over $4bn worth of weapons contracts with Russia.

Last November, the two states held joint exercises in the Caribbean Sea, close to US territorial waters.

Sounds like a good way to use up some T-72s in storage, with a bit of an upgrade they should cope well enough with the demands and at the same time deal with some of the Russian Armys problem of too many tanks in storage.

As I read somewhere its about S-300VM Antej system Chavez is geting.

    And now this.

The U.S. continues to oppose the purchase by Venezuela from Russia air defense S-300
The U.S. continues to oppose the acquisition of Venezuela in Russia air defense S-300. This was confirmed by the eve of the regular press briefing State Department spokesman, Mark Toner, responding to questions about the upcoming visit of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Venezuela, planned his talks with the presidents of this country and Bolivia, Hugo Chavez and Evo Morales and the possible purchase by Caracas Moscow S-300.

According to M. Toner, the American Foreign Ministry has previously expressed "their concern, their views on the needs of Venezuela in this kind of defensive systems." "As for the rest of Venezuela, Bolivia, and indeed any country, of course, free to develop bilateral relations with any other State. I have no comment beyond the question on whether Venezuela should have signified the genus powerful defensive system," - said American diplomat.

The head of the Russian government, is to visit Venezuela on April 1. It is planned that on Friday in Caracas, he will hold talks with President Hugo Chavez will sign some bilateral documents, as well as meet with the leader of Bolivia, which is specifically for this to arrive in the capital of Venezuela. In Venezuela, Vladimir Putin's long overdue - this is his first visit to the country, while Chavez visited Russia eight times already.

It applies to all missiles capable of being used at more than 300km or able to carry a payload of 500kgs or more.

It defines those missiles as being strategic in nature but that doesn't make them real strategic weapons.

It is the reason the export version of the missile in Russian service to replace the Scud called Iskander-E has an official range of 280km and a payload of 480kgs.
If it had the same range as the Tender-M that the Russian Army uses it would violate the MTRC agreement if they tried to export it.
Because it is not exported the only agreement that applies to the Tender-M is the INF treaty.

As I read somewhere its about S-300VM Antej system Chavez is geting.

Excellent, I love that system. Interesting confirmation of its max range too, because I have seen specifications that list range against aerodynamic targets as 200km, but I guess with the work on flight profiling and lofting trajectories for the S-400 would make 300km range possible.

Over $5 bln arms contracts with Venezuela in the works - Putin
    RIA Novosti

    05/04/201018:33

NOVO-OGARYOVO (Moscow Region), April 5 (RIA Novosti) - Venezuela could sign over $5 billion worth of contracts for Russian arms and military equipment, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said on Monday.

"Our delegation has just returned from Venezuela, while the aggregate volume of contracts could exceed $5 billion," Putin said at a meeting with Russian defense industry officials.

He said the figure includes a $2.2 billion Russian loan to Venezuela.

He added that the contracts would be placed at 13 leading defense-industry enterprises, including Izhmash, the manufacturer of famed Kalashnikov assault rifles.

"The sources of funding have been established and coordinated with our partners," Putin said.

The Russian prime minister visited Venezuela on Friday for talks on a range of issues, including military and technical cooperation and joint energy projects.
