Russia says S-300 deliveries to Venezuela pending

    RIA Novosti

    11:48 22/02/2011

ABU-DHABI, February 22 (RIA Novosti) - Deliveries of S-300 missile defense systems to Venezuela have been delayed, but will go ahead, an official at Rosoboronexport, Russia's state-owned arms export monopoly, said on Tuesday.

In November, Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said that Russia had agreed to lend his country over $4 billion to buy weapons.

"There is a contract with Venezuela but it's not yet being implemented," Rosoboronexport special programs director Nikolai Dimidyuk told reporters.

"Venezuela has rescheduled the dates several times, but now we have agreed on a timeframe for the deliveries," he added.

Venezuela is one of the biggest buyers of Russian arms.

I wonder how the Russian MIC will cope with both orders for export and local orders...

I guess the export orders probably earn them larger profits so they would probably want to fill them first, certainly the larger profit margins should allow more investment in production facilities and tooling, not to mention training workers.

Hope too much is not spent on bonuses for the management.

Keep in mind that Central and South America generally get what they are given by the US, or they have what the US lets them have.

In the region a T-72 is a powerful tank, compared with the M48 and M60 tanks and Leopard 1s of countries in the region. In Venezuelan service it is replacing AMX-30 tanks.

Its neighbours are Guyana, Columbia, and Brazil.

Colombia has no tanks as such.

Guyana has no tanks as such, just a few wheeled light vehicles with 90mm guns.

And Brazil has Leopard 1s and M60 tanks.

A ZU-23 is a serious danger to all helicopters, but would have trouble against a modern fighter. The point is that the modern fighters in the region are F-5s and early model Mirages. The Zu-23 is a very effective weapon against soft ground targets like enemy troops and light vehicles.

Very simply by buying older material that is not state of the art they are improving their capability without causing an arms race.

The stuff they are buying is well suited to their conditions... a modern heavy tank would sink into the ground in most places in Venezuela, but they have the advantage that the T-72 is largely compatible with the T-90 so any upgrades applied to the T-90 in the future should be applicable to their new tanks when they need it or if it is desirable to do so.

Most importantly they are probably getting 70% of the performance of a T-90 for likely 20% of the cost so they can afford to buy more than they would have with a more expensive model.

Venezuela’s Chavez eyes Russian Su-35 fighters

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said on Thursday he is interested in buying Sukhoi Su-35 Flanker-E multirole fighter jets from Russia to enhance his country’s defense capabilities.

The president said that the issues of security, defense and the development of the country should be the priority for the government of Venezuela within the frames of the national independence provision.

“This independence, the well protected and guaranteed one, will give us a possibility to build new Venezuela, new Fatherland and to reach new horizons,” he added.

The Su-35, powered by two 117S engines with thrust vectoring, combines high maneuverability and the capability to effectively engage several air targets simultaneously using both guided and unguided missiles and weapon systems.

I hope Chavez doesn't lead his country down the path of Saudi Arabia, where oil money is squandered on things the people don't really need.

As much as I would love to see Russia sell products and Venezuela protect itself, I would also like to see both countries improve in social equality and in terms of economics.

Perhaps instead of spending a few billion on more Flankers, perhaps a joint venture to develop cheap laptops or tablets, or systems to purify water etc etc.

Not suggesting that Venezuela doesn't need an air force, or that Russia should not sell such systems to anyone...

They could dump the old F-16s finally with new Su-35s.

But yes I agree with Garry, at some point Venezuela needs to slow down the buying spree.

This price also included BUK-M2 and Antej-2500 simulators.

Between Venezuela, Syria, Egypt, Buk-m2 has some decent export success.
Meanwhile India doesn't have a single system as good as what Venezuela has.....instead of more expensive foreign fighter purchases, maybe they need to look into their AD.

    Now that almost went unnoticed.

11 bin $ for all previous deals and all of them will be supplied by the end of this year. Thats huge.

Anyway much will depend on who wins next election. If Maduro wins we can expect further sales:

    - Kilo class
    - Su-35
    - PAK-FA
    - perhaps more airdefense

    and much more.

If Capriles wins we can expect returning Venezuela under US stick. Well elections are scheduled for the 14.April so fingers crossed.

Russia intends to complete the supply of arms to Venezuela before the end of the year

"In 2013, we will complete all arms sales to Venezuela," - said the head of Rosoboronexport delegation at the LAAD-2013 exhibition in Brazil Sergei Ladygin.

RIO DE JANEIRO, April 9 - RIA Novosti. Rosoboronexport will complete deliveries of weapons and military equipment to Venezuela on previous contracts until the end of 2013, RIA Novosti said the company's head of delegation at the exhibition LAAD-2013 in Brazil Sergei Ladygin.

"In 2013, we will complete all arms sales to Venezuela," - said Ladygin. According to him, the company is in talks about expanding military cooperation with Venezuela.

"We are ready to deliver to the country high-speed boats and submarines," - said Ladygin.

The contracts, which remains to complete the supply of arms, is $ 2 billion.

Currently Sun Venezuela fully adopted the technique of Russia, except for the fleet and transport aircraft. Previous military contract totaled $ 11 billion.

    Well Maduro won. Very Happy

I guess unobstructed weapon delivery can now continue for 6 more years.

Hugo Chavez's successor Nicolas Maduro wins Venezuela election in highly contested result

Voters narrowly elected Hugo Chavez's hand-picked successor as president today, in a razor-close election.

Winner Nicolas Maduro campaigned on a promise to carry on Mr Chavez's self-styled socialist revolution and defeated a two-time challenger who claimed the late president's regime has put Venezuela on the road to ruin.

Officials say Maduro defeated Henrique Capriles by only about 300,000 votes. The margin was 50.8 to 49.1%.

Mr Maduro's stunningly close victory came after a campaign in which he promised to carry on Mr Chavez's self-proclaimed socialist revolution, while Mr Capriles declared that the Chavez regime put Venezuela on the road to ruin.

Mr Maduro, acting president since Mr Chavez's death from cancer, held a double-digit advantage just two weeks ago.

Chavistas set off fireworks and blasted car horns as they cruised through Caracas in jubilation.

There was no immediate word from the Capriles camp but Mr Maduro addressed a crowd from the presidential palace, calling his victory further proof that Mr Chavez "continues to be invincible, that he continues to win battles".

He said Mr Capriles had called him before the results were announced to suggest a "pact" but he had refused.

Mr Maduro, a long-time foreign minister to Mr Chavez, rode a wave of sympathy for the charismatic leader to victory, pinning his hopes on the immense loyalty for his boss among millions of poor beneficiaries of government largesse and the powerful state apparatus that Mr Chavez skilfully consolidated.

Mr Capriles' main campaign weapon was to simply emphasise "the incompetence of the state" in handling the world's largest oil reserves.

Millions of Venezuelans were lifted out of poverty under Mr Chavez, but many also believe his government not only squandered, but plundered, much of the one trillion dollars in oil revenues during his tenure.

Venezuelans are afflicted by chronic power cuts, crumbling infrastructure, unfinished public works projects, double-digit inflation, food and medicine shortages and rampant crime - one of the world's highest murdere and kidnapping rates - that the opposition said worsened after Mr Chavez died on March 5.

That discontent was thick across the nation.

"We can't continue to believe in messiahs," said Jose Romero, a 48-year-old industrial engineer who voted for Capriles in the central city of Valencia.

"This country has learned a lot and today we know that one person can't fix everything."

Turnout was 78%, down from just over 80% in the October election that Mr Chavez won by a nearly 11-point margin.

Buying expensive SAM units off the shelf is one thing , proving operational might is something else. Almost all the SAM systems available worldwide are extremely manpower-intensive & require enormous investments for ensuring their serviceability & operational availability, something which Venezuela will be hard-placed to provide in light of the country’s poor economic situation.

While an argument can be made that large areas in India are exposed to an air offensive it is wrong to suggest that India does not have a multi layered air defense system in place .

Delhi & Mumbai have already been selected in the first phase of the BMD installation .

The strategic planning has already begun to install the BMD system in the two cities and the final proposal will be put before the government after detailed analysis of the entire project.

Nice graph (not entirely correct but gives a nice overview)

It is however difficult to determine exact number of air defense assets.

Except for Izvestyia (which is unreliable) and SIPRI (which got things wrong) no one is providing any information.

    Wikipedia info is totally off.

And Russia has already offered some subs and speed boats to Venezuela

Russian military contracts with Venezuela completed in 2013

    Offering speedboats and submarines

The company Rosoboronexport completed delivery of arms and military equipment to Venezuela, according to the contracts already signed, and will do so until the end of 2013, said company director Sergei Ladiguin in LAAD 2013 exhibition that takes place in Brazil.

In his words, Rosoboronexport is holding talks to increase military cooperation with Venezuela. "We are ready to supply this country speedboats and submarines," said Ladyguin.

The total value of contracts, by which arms deliveries are still pending, is of two billion dollars.

Nope, I just think we just haven`t seen other pieces of equipment as 9M83, radar, command etc. I believe eventually we will.

Besides we still dont know quantities delivered and ordered of BUK-M2/Pechora-2M/S-300VM and there was some Tor-M1-2 mentioning.

There where even some information about Venezuela decision to acquire Belarus command systems and we dont know whats with that.

    Time will tell.
