MT-LB another soviet hero Empty MT-LB another soviet hero

    Post  d_taddei2 Thu Dec 10, 2015 8:50 pm

when people think of soviet hero's (in terms of equipment etc) most will automatically think T-55, T-72, BMP-1, BM-21, Mig-21 and Mig-25 etc etc,

But one piece of equipment that often gets forgotten about and many people even over look it, is the MT-LB. Why is it a Soviet hero? i think it has to be said one word comes to mind versatility and the fact its still in wide spread use and in vast numbers, its been used in just about every form of armour vehicle variant known to man. Its also still being purchased by countries, Iraq recently placed an order for roughly 500 MT-LB's armed with ZU-23-2 23.

A brief description of the vehicle taken from source - The crew, a driver and a commander/gunner sit in a compartment at the front of the vehicle, with the engine behind them. A compartment at the rear enables up to 11 infantry to be carried or a cargo of up to 2,000 kg. A load of 6,500 kg can be towed. The vehicle is fully amphibious, being propelled by its tracks in the water.

A small turret at the front of the vehicle fits a 7.62 mm PKT machine gun with 360 degree manual traverse and an elevation of -5 to +30 degrees. The vehicle is lightly armoured against small arms and shell splinters with a thickness of 3 to 10 mm of steel. The infantry compartment has two hatches over the top, which open forwards. There are four firing ports - one in either side of the hull, the other two in the rear twin doors of the infantry compartment.

The driver is provided with a TVN-2 infra-red periscope, which in combination with the OU-3GK infra-red/white light search light provides a range of about 40 m. All vehicles include an NBC system.

Below is a list of some of its uses:

    Artillery tractor
    Ambulance
    Arctic (climate) vehicle
    Ground surveillance radar vehicle
    Anti-tank version armed with AT-6
    NBC reconnaissance
Engineer vehicle, with an hydraulic dozer blade and an extendable hydraulic arm with a bucket and armoured recovery and repair.
    Command vehicle
    Comms and SIGINT vehicle
    Artillery observer vehicle
    Mine-laying systems vehicle
    Electronic warfare system vehicle

and more common versions known to many

Anti air Strela-10 (SA-13 Gopher) system
Artillery in the following forms of:
    2S1 122mm howitzer system,
    Chosta 120mm mortar system,
system armed with the 82mm automatic mortar system 2B14 Podnos.

its also spawned the MT-LBu which shared some similar roles

it was also used as an APC and a form of cheap IFV having various turrets attached such as:
    14.5mm
    GSh-23V 23 mm
    AGS-17/AGS-30
    NSV/Kord 12.7 mm
    GSh-30K 30 mm
    ZSU 23-2
ZSU 23-2 + Igla SAM system (anti air system)
    Kornet ATGM system
    turret from BTR 80
and a various combinations of the above

so as you can see the list of uses are almost endless. I think despite its thin armour this vehicle used in APC/IFV form is a cheap decent alternative to more expensive IFV, for armed forces on budget this could be a great alternative and Russia has 1,000's in storage to sell. I have to say again that the key strength and success of this vehicle has been down to its versatility and as an added bonus its cheap.

it would be nice to see other peoples views on the MT-LB and do you think its worthy to be included in the long list of Soviet hero's??

Surely the strongest Sovietic designs of the post World War II were done in the 1970s. There is still a good number of them that remain in production and very actual, then it would be too early to select the bests.

Apparently there is also an upgrade program in place for MT-LB's. According to the Swedish Defense Research Institute, 500 alone were upgraded between 2016-2018. No figures since but it makes sense to continue such a program. An upgraded MT-LB was shown at Army 2020.

There are places in Russia where the snow or the mud is too deep to operate BMPs.... the MTLB is the sort of vehicle you would explore the arctic with... and many existing vehicles in every Russian and Soviet Units already have MTLB based vehicles including the ACRV-2 command vehicles... in many ways it is more like the American Jeep but for cold conditions...

"How many cars have undergone major repairs since then?:
We launched a separate workshop for major repairs of MT-LB in 2015, and since the same year we have been fulfilling the state defense order. In the first year, 26 cars were repaired, then the number began to grow. Over five years, about 800 different models of equipment from the MT-LB family have been overhauled. Accordingly, we repair 180-200 units a year."

Some information about the upgrade/modernization. Increased power, and reduced weight by 800kgs which will allow the vehicle to had additional bolt on armour if needed.

The changes should improve the power and handling of the machine. It was possible to reduce weight primarily by installing a new KamAZ-740.50 engine. "The power is increased to 360 horsepower, and the total weight of the armored vehicle will decrease by 500 kilograms," the source said.
In addition, the installed hydromechanical box will allow the car to be turned in all gears with a controlled turning radius.

Also, the modernization involves reducing the weight of the tracks. New tracks with a closed hinge will lighten the product by an additional 300 kilograms. As a result, the total weight of the car will drop by 800 kilograms. This allows you to put additional armor and protect the car," - said at the plant

MT-LB is a floating vehicle, its movement on the water is carried out by rewinding tracks. The transport and cargo compartment is located at the rear of the vehicle and can carry up to 2.5 tons of cargo or up to 11 troops.

Correct, but this was the proposed upgrade, but the upgrades didn't start until recently. This would then give people information on what the upgrades were. On another thread which someone mentioned that MTLB being modernized but stated they didn't know what it entailed so I found this and posted here so people know what the upgrades were. It's not uncommon for upgrades to be mentioned and years later they get round to doing them.

But if it has caused an offence or its deemed unnecessary then I can delete the post if u want.

Ok thanks. Also thought it was interesting how the article mentions how the vehicle operates when in amphibious conditions. The weight reduction brings the vehicle to about 11 tons, and MPG should be slightly better as well. What's interesting is how Russia has been producing many new vehicles, yet has decided to upgrade the MTLB and not design a whole new vehicle. I'd imagine that this is down to the fact that the upgrade is simple, cheap, and quick. And add to the fact that Russia still has large numbers of them and then there is the huge numbers that have been exported. This would allow for foreign sales of the upgrade, and most likely upgrades could be done within the foreign countries territory. And while your upgrading, there is potential to sell add-ons, such as extra armour, or replace the 7.62mm gun with something else, or a different turret for example a BTR-82 turret which has been seen on MTLB before.

That highlights a problem even today where upgrades are suggested but there is no further follow up on if they were implemented... how they went... did they upgrade all or just some of them etc etc.

Often years can go by and you either forget that upgrade and then are surprised to find it was already done, or assume every vehicle got upgraded only to find years later either they haven't or they are just starting because it just passed all its tests.

Would the Berezhok turret be practical to apply to the MT-LB(u) and still be able to transport a 8-11 infantry?

Its great to see that they replacing the 2S1 with the 2S34. When reading about it I came across the SMM 74 B1.10 Tundzha-Sani (MTLB 120mm mortar from Bulgaria). I wonder how well both have performed whilst in use

No, the turret penetrates into the crew compartment and takes up space... some of the new turrets have no hull penetration and would allow the capacity to be retained.

the 2S34 isnt a replacement only around 30 were converted. the 2S1 is still a good system, in fact Serbia have decided to do an upgrade rather than build new wheeled versions they developed although i believe a small handful of wheeled ones will be built. the new Serbian upgrade made the whole system much better. i posted more about it in the 2S1 thread, post 39

    Wow... in that link you posted was this;

    MT-LB another soviet hero Fire_s10

The red thing with the holes in the top is a Russian invented fire suppression system... I remember seeing in on an excellent Aussie TV programme from the 1990s called Beyond 2000 that looked at new ideas and new technologies being invented at the time.

This thing is very very simple... place it in the engine bay or near a fuel system in a vehicle (not a crew cabin or manned area).

When a fire is detected this thing is ignited and it rapidly burns material which sucks all the O2 out of the surrounding air and suffocates the fire to prevent it from doing too much damage.

Good to see it being in use.

Russia Today had a similar programme called Technology Update which was excellent too and looked at new technology and developments to improve things and make life easier, but they cancelled it.

An automatic fire extinguishing system is installed in the engine compartment. It wasn't in the old cars.

So this system was developed in the 1990s, and is only introduced to this vehicle now... if you had asked me before hand if they had these I would have assumed they all had them because the system is actually very simple and cheap.... it consumes oxygen but it does not get hot or create super heated gas like it would if it was just some material that burned rapidly.

It has already been mentioned on the forum about upgrades... we hear a bit about them and assume they are done only to find out later they were cancelled or are only just doing them now. Things like upgrades for the Blackjacks, or APS systems on tanks and armoured vehicles...
