The RPG-7 was technically replaced in the mid 1980s by the RPG-16 which has a larger calibre 57mm tube and a rocket that is completely enclosed inside the tube.

It didn't have the growth potential of the RPG-7 which got 105mm calibre warheads to match the later 105mm calibre RPG-29.

The RPG-29 is not popular being large long and heavy and having a warhead the same calibre as the late model RPG-7s can fire.

The main problem for the RPG-7 is as the warheads get bigger and heavier the tiny 40mm calibre rocket motor is less and less effective so the trajectory gets steeper and the rocket less accurate and shorter ranged.

A new rocket launcher based on the RPG-32 would be a big step forward with a light "launcher/sighting" mechanism attached to a range of disposable rocket types up to and including larger calibre rockets like the 125mm calibre RPG-28.

Hopefully they will come out with a new modular launcher that can accept existing and new types of disposable launch tubes and rocket types like the new RPO-M does.

Perhaps a new thermal ballistic sight like the new one being shown that has targeting capability out to 1.2km would be ideal and it could have a mechanism so that when different rocket types are clipped in to the launcher of different calibres the ballistic performance is taken into account by the scope and automatically compensates for the different ballistic trajectories of the different rounds will allow a large improvement in accuracy and effective range for all rocket types.

Hopefully it will be more than just a Belarus program and Bazalt will get on board.

Of course for a while I have been reading bits and pieces about new systems that include basic gyros to keep the rockets flying straight (ie counter the effect of crosswinds) and even laser beam riding guidance to increase accuracy.

I think new scope technology could allow guided like performance without the expense of more expensive guided rockets.

the scope would be reusable and over time would save money as fewer rockets will be needed and chance of effective use of the weapon would be much higher.
