Someone joked that they are being paid by the hour

Tell me it was a British person... the Russian Navy would love that irony...

Russia is so far ahead in the Arctic that that ship isn´t such a high priority.
The 2 ships for the coast guard will propably be build much faster than this one.

Russkie are building more ice class vessels than the entire west owns.
Having more than all of the west combined Laughing
It was last week when it turned out, that nobody can evacuate an Australian guy from Antarctica because nobody has anything in range, while the sole icebreaker Australia has needed more than a week to dispatch. They finally managed.

I remember a senate commission with an ex coastal guard admiral, who declined to authorize a provocation towards Russkie that was ordered to him Laughing He said literally that they can't go to Arctica, because the sole icebreaker they have is so freaky old&worn, that in a best case will broke down half way. And they will have to ask Russkie for a rescue operation Laughing Laughing Laughing He has been fired on the spot for saying that Laughing Laughing Laughing yet the show was hilarious Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

A few years ago the BBC made a documentary about "evil Russkies doing bad things in the Arctic" and the "battle for the Arctic between evil Russkies
and western saints", moving along a norwegian scientific expedition... on board a rented russian icebreaker.  lol1 lol1 lol1

The main reason I think a british person claiming the Russian MIC is on a go slow is because the Russian Navy had its first experience of international travel with a chap called Thaddeus Von Bellingshausen (sorry for spelling). These days he would be called a Baltic explorer but then he was Russian and was really the first Russian sailor to sail around the place. He was the first human being to spot the antarctic ice shelf though he didn't realise what it was at that time.

For his first voyage he was given the job of writing the manual for Russian sailors to sail outside Russian waters and one of the first major notes he made was when he arrived in great britain for repairs he noted that it is important to pay for the jobs being done rather than paying for an hourly rate because paying for an hourly rate meant the locals went on a go slow to earn as much money for the job as they possibly could.

Paying for a job instead of an hourly rate was ingrained into the Russian Navy on its first decent round the world trip by the money grabbing British.

Another useless garbage and again wasted money.
And again, there is no anti-submarine component and no air defense system.
Is a country with a little less than 150 million inhabitants able to build a navy or not. It seems not.
It is not the SMO's problem at all, but the SMO is just an excuse for the complete incompetence of Russian shipbuilding.

It is better for the Russians to remain silent until they reach the level of launching one frigate and one SSGN submarine in one year, as well as commissioning one frigate and one SSGN submarine in the same year. Shame, fucking shame.
Until then, they only deserved to be laughed at and until then they don't have a navy.

Compare it with similar ships being operated by Canada (Harry DeWolf class) or Norway (Svalbard class). This is much more well equipped.

I would also prefer if it had better air defense. But this is meant to operate in the Arctic in the first place. The threat environment is totally different.

Second unit for the Coast Guard laid down in Vuborg shipyard.
    Name is Dzhezhinsky.

    So, we have now:

    - 2 units for the Navy: Ivan Papanin and Nikolai Zubov
    - 2 units for the Coast Guard: Purga and Dzerzhinsky

That 2nd image doesn't appear to be a Pr 23550? Too many design differences...

    Maybe an early artists conception?

Having a lack of anti sub in the artic makes sense to a point, however why it has no dedicated AD is a real weird thing, Its not a small ship, it should have AD always present.

One plane can pretty much **** up its day.

I know people will go "it has two ciws" but ciws are the very very last ditch effort, you do not want to rely on those

It is a COSTAL GUARD ship, you hopeless case.
With ice-breaking cap on pair with your pathetic entire fleet of 60 y/o crap.
And can carry Calibres Laughing Laughing
    It is like beating a 12 y/o.
Why do you even consider opening your mouth, if you do have not a second chance of standing?!?

It is an 8k ton ship when fully loaded that isn't a small ship by any means, the better question is what are you such a twit?

It will not be protected 24/7 by coastal assists and with only two ciws it's a sitting duck.

If it was a small Corvette sure but this isn't a small Corvette this is a ship with larger tonnage then a frigate

It is a patrol boat that manages fisheries and border issues, having two gatling guns and a main deck gun and probably MANPADS is plenty.

It will quickly see US aviation because they are getting more and more interested by the north pole.

They will need this version of the ship but with weapons. A border guard ship with missiles is dumb because they don't have the people to man them. But the navy will need to start frigate icebreakers with mostly anti air and anti sub systems.

You can park a container version of missiles or Tor at the deck at any given moment if a Calibre battery is not good enough.
This ship is better armed than ANY other ship of similar type all around the world, yet it is still not good enough for some. confused
I guess that nothing less than a Death Star rib boat size won't make some of you stop yapping.

Check the weapons equipment of these ship's opponents in Canada and Norway. They are even worse armed.
The US doesn't even have an equivalent since they suck at building icebreakers.

    @Seig Heil

Compare it to any medium to large OPV's and Coast Guard ships around the world and see what you get.

Currently the largest US Coast Guard ship is the Healy icebreaker - at 16 000 tons and it has no armament whatsoever Laughing
The next gen US icebreaker Polar-2 will have a 22 000 ton displacement armed with 2x30mm guns and some M2 HMG's. thumbsup

Do you know the old joke?

There is a contest for the reconstruction of Brandenburger Tor.
    Three offers arrive.
From Turkish company - 1 mln euro
From German company - 2 mln euro
From Polish company - 5 mln euro

Committee chairman - being surprised - asked the Poles how did they ended up with the number?!?

It is very easy! 2 mln for me, 2 mln for you, and 1 mln for Turk as someone needs to do the job!
