DCNS Cuts Deal With Egypt for 4 Gowind Ships

PARIS — French shipbuilder DCNS has sold four Gowind warships to Egypt, with the first 2,500-ton corvette to be built in France and the remaining three in Alexandria through a technology transfer, a company spokesman said Friday.

The contract was signed in June and has now gone into effect, the spokesman said. The spokesman declined to confirm the €1 billion (US $1.4 billion) value for the four units reported on the website La Tribune.

This is a “major program for the Egyptian Navy,” he said.

A further two units are held as options, the spokesman said. The deal includes DCNS’ Setis combat management system and is seen as a boost for Egyptian local industry.

Yeah, I seriously doubt Egypt is looking to spend $207,000,000 per Rafale... Defense update has, in the past, made some seriously untrustworthy claims in lots of issues/purchases, this looks to be another.

I hate to sound all pro-East, but why not buy frigates from China, Russia, or possibly even India? Russia has been exporting them for a while now with great reliability, China could do about the same, and India as well. Just don't know why they'd bother with the expensive **** coming from the West. Even Turkey is building smaller combat vessels....

Egypt negotiates possible purchase of Mistral helicopter carriers built for Russia

Cairo is also interested in purchasing two Gorwind-class corvettes, but the sides cannot agree on the price

PARIS, September 23. /TASS/. The Egyptian delegation is currently in talks with France on purchasing two Mistral-type helicopter carriers built for Russia, La Tribune reported on Wednesday.

Egyptian negotiators received permission to discuss the possible deal from President Abdl Fattah al-Sisi. According to the sources cited by the French newspaper, apart from Mistral helicopter carriers, Cairo is also interested in purchasing two Gorwind-class corvettes, but the sides cannot agree on the price. The negotiations are complicated by the fact that the French Economy Ministry has proposed an inflated price which, in Egypt’s opinion, deprives representatives of the DCNS shipbuilding company responsible for the construction of helicopter carries of "any possibility for maneuver". "Last week, Egyptians almost closed the door twice because DCNS has nothing to answer them," the newspaper said.

The discussions were resumed at the last moment. However, La Tribune said it is hard to forecast any future developments. Negotiations will continue "until the end of October", and official decisions can be expected around this time, the newspaper noted. "In any case, Egypt looks very interested in purchasing assault ships, though it never had the equipment of such scale in its fleet," La Tribune said. "Around 10 days ago, the Egyptian delegation visited Saint-Nazaire. It is supposed that the ships will be stationed in the Red and Mediterranean Seas for a possible intervention in Libya and Yemen," the newspaper noted.

    Mistral contract

The €1.12-billion contract to build the Mistral amphibious assault ships for the Russian navy was signed in June 2011.

The first Mistral, the Vladivostok, was floated in October 2013. It was expected to be handed over to Russia by the French side in the fall of 2014, but the handover did not take place.

The second Mistral, the Sevastopol, was to be delivered to Russia in October 2015, but the deal was suspended too.

France suspended the delivery of Mistrals to Russia as part of a package of sanctions the European countries imposed on Moscow for what they claimed was its alleged role in destabilization of east Ukraine.

Russia has constantly dismissed allegations that Moscow could in any way be involved in hostilities in Ukraine’s east.

In early August, Russia and France reached an agreement to officially cancel the contract. Under the deal, Russia gets the money and the equipment back, and France will then be able to use the warships.

"Russia may supply to Egypt up to 80 Kamov Ka-52 Alligator [NATO reporting name: Hokum B] attack helicopters and Ka-52K Katran (navalized derivative of Ka-52) helicopters designed for Mistral helicopter carriers, a source in the system of Russia’s military technical cooperation with other countries told TASS Tuesday. The source said that after a contract with France for Mistrals, Egypt is assessing the number of Russian helicopters that may be supplied for these vessels. "In addition to 50 Ka-52 Alligator attack helicopters, the contract for which has already been signed, the Egyptian side plans to acquire, in order to equip Mistrals, Ka-52K Katran naval helicopters and is now making up its mind about their number," the source said.
    Egyptian Navy: News Ka-52K

"It is not ruled out that the Egyptian side will decide to deploy 16 Ka-52K helicopters at each of its ships, then the volume of the planned order will grow to 32 items, and the overall amount of Ka-52 type helicopters for Egypt will reach 70-80 items," he said. The source said the Russian-Egyptian contract for Ka-52K ship-based helicopters may be signed in the first quarter of 2016."

So this would bring KA52 orders for Egypt to...82 right?

"Russian Helicopters confirms agreement with Egypt for 46 Kamov Ka-52 aircraft

Russia has signed an agreement with Egypt for delivery of forty-six helicopters of the Ka-52 Alligator family, the Director General of the JSC Russian Helicopters holding company, Alexander Mikheyev, said on Wednesday. "In this knotty situation, we've managed to keep up the financial parameters reached previously and to broaden the presence of Russian helicopter technologies in the world market," he said. "For instance, a large agreement for delivery of forty-six Ka-52 Alligator helicopters has been signed with Egypt through [the state weaponry trading company] Rosoboronexport." In the summer, a source in the military diplomatic milieu told TASS Egypt had commissioned Ka-52 helicopters to Russia. Another source said several months later the case in hand was 50 helicopters and the handover of the sea-based version of the Ka-52 developed and built for deployment aboard the Mistral class helicopter carriers built in France upon an order from the Russian Navy."

"Egypt will be the first international customer for new Russian 9A1472 Vikhr-1 (NATO reporting name: AT-16 Scallion) anti-tank guided missile (ATGM), according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute`s (SIPRI) arms transfer database. According to the database, Egypt has decided to equip the ordered 46 Ka-52 (Hokum-B) attack helicopters with Russian ATGMs. As a result, the country has chosen two types of anti-tank missiles, namely, 9A1472 Vikhr-1 and 9M120 Ataka (AT-9 Spiral-2) missiles. The contract has to be signed yet, according to the database. SIPRI did not specify the modifications and the warhead types of the missiles requested by Egypt. So, the country may acquire both anti-tank and anti-personnel 9M120 Ataka missiles. At the moment there is only anti-tank Vikhr ATGM modification developed.

As consisted with the SIPRI`s database, Egypt intends to buy about 1000 Vikhrs and the same quantity of 9M120 Ataka ATGMs. In total, the country may acquire up to 2000 of Russian missiles for Ka-52 attack helicopters.

    Egyptian Navy: News Egypt_first_international_customer_for_Russian_9A1472_Vikhr-1_AT-16_Scallion_anti-tank_guided_missile_640_001

9A1472 Vikhr laser-guided anti-tank guided missile was developed by Tula-based Instrument Design Bureau (Russian acronym: KBP, a subsidiary of the High-Precision Weapons holding) in mid-1980s. It was brought into service in 1985. Nevertheless, the batch production of the new missile was not launched. In the 2000s. the ATGM was upgraded and designated as Vikhr-1 retaining the NATO reporting name. The serial production of 9A1472 Vikhr established by Kalashnikov Group was challenged by several technical issues. By late 2015, the problems were finally solved and in October Russian Ministry of Defense (MoD) received the first batch of Vikhr missiles. 9A1472 has a day/night range of 10/6 km respectively. The missile has an armour-piercing capacity of 1000mm (behind explosive reactive armour, ERA). Vikhr can be fitted to Ka-50/52 attack helicopters and Su-25T/39 close air support (CAS) aircraft.

9M120 Ataka ATGM was developed by Kolomna-based KBM company (a subsidiary of High-Precision Weapons) in mid-1990s. It has a range of 6 km and an armour-piercing capacity of 850-950mm (behind ERA). It can be fitted to Mi-28N (Havoc-B), Ka-52, Mi-24 (Hind) helicopters, 9P149/9P149M Shturm/Shturm-SM self-propelled anti-tank systems, Project 14310 patrol craft"

At the moment there is only anti-tank Vikhr ATGM modification developed.

My understanding is that Vikhr has a dual warhead that allows proximity as well as impact fusing to allow air targets to be engaged.  From memory the DCS KA-50 Hokum game includes a switch that can be set to choose the warhead state before firing.

From memory there is even footage of Vikhr being fired with Shkval-M guidance system on a Tu-16 unmanned target.

It was multi-warhead from start on and yes it does have a switch to set the fuze prior to launch.

I assume they wanted to say that there is no at this moment thermobaric variant, MAC, incendinary, flechette or something of a sort.

And yeah, it has dual purpose HEAT warhead at this moment.

According to the French resource "Ouest-France" with a link to the page on the network "Twitter" user @BTelawy, two former Russian amphibious assault ship (UDC) of the Mistral "Vladivostok" and "Sevastopol" received the names of Egyptian Gamal Abdel Nasser (Egyptian tail number "1010") and Anwar Sadat (hull number "1020") in honour of the Egyptian President. Interestingly, the original information dated February 1, 2016.

As noted by the French resource, in contrast to the Russian sailors who arrived at training in France at a time on Board the training ship "Smolny", the Egyptian crews arrive groups by regular flights. As of 20 March in France was 70 sailors, before the end of the month it was planned to increase their number up to 180 people (the crew of the first UDC). The arrival of the crew of the second ship is planned "in the coming weeks". The first Egyptian officers arrived in Saint-Nazaire in February 2016.

[url=http://www.defense-aerospace.com/articles-view/release/3/173119/egyptian-shipyard-cuts-first-metal-on-first-gowind-corvette.html] Beginning of Construction of the First Gowind 2500 Corvette Built In Egypt

On Saturday, April 16th 2016, Alexandria Shipyard started cutting metal for the first Gowind 2500 corvette built in Egypt, in the presence of high representatives of the Egyptian Navy and of DCNS technical assistance and management teams.

The Egyptian Navy chose DCNS to design and build four Gowind 2500 corvettes with a construction technology transfer. The contract, which entered into force in July 2015, provides for the construction of the first ship within 29 months. It is now being built by DCNS in Lorient.

The three following units will be built by Egyptian partner Alexandria Shipyard.

DCNS has sent supervision and technical assistance teams to Alexandria for the construction of three corvettes through technology transfer. DCNS also provides training of the Egyptian shipyard staff at DCNS site in Lorient. Finally, DCNS will deliver all technical data required for the construction of the corvettes as well as necessary components.

The Gowind 2500 corvette chosen by the Egyptian Navy is a first rank ship with a displacement of 2,500 tonnes; it incorporates the SETIS multi-mission combat management system developed by DCNS.
