The Akula and Sierra class are being upgraded to 4th Gen Standards which is quite good , Put in new Sonars , Decoys , Torpedoes 4th Gen UGST-M and Kalbir makes it very potent.

TR1 now we know all the Sierra class are being upgraded what about Akula class any news on how many will be upgraded ?

Delta class is almost all modernized with new weapon and systems and all of Borei class might be ready by 2018 already.

I think that next in line for modernization is Oscar class and some of them are passing it as we speak.

The sail is broader in Sierra because it has 2 escape tower in the sail if i am not wrong.

Akula is hydrodynamically more refined design

Good news, the modernization of the boats will see their service life extended by 10 years.
    Contract is already signed.

It would be interesting to see of Onyx would have range comparable to Shipwreck in ~ 500 km category.

We certainly know Klub has higher range in Russian version but little is known about Onyx

I have seen estimates of 500km and 700km for Onyx from sources I thought at the time (and since) were credible.

Its a pity the Sierra was so expensive. It is a better platform than the Akula.

Pretty interesting, not too often you see the "Condor" class in dock:

The boat is Nizhny Novgorod, date is 2013, dry-dock is the ever ubiquitous PD-50.

Nizhy Novgorod never left service. That is just a standard repair job, nothing heavy.

Others, like Karp @ Svezdochka, are being repaired and modernized after sitting around for a long time waiting funds.

Russia to Refit 2 Sierra-Class Nuclear Subs

MOSCOW, May 14 (RIA Novosti) - The Russian Defense Ministry has signed a contract to refit two Soviet-era Sierra-class multipurpose nuclear submarines, the Zvezdochka shipyard said Wednesday.

"A contract was signed with the Defense Ministry to extensively refit two Project 945 [NATO reporting name Sierra]. One of the submarines has remained at the shipyard for over 10 years, the other will arrive this year," spokesman Yevgeny Gladyshev said.

The refit will extend the submarines' service for about 10 years.

The shipyard's workers are currently removing nuclear fuel from the reactor of the first submarine, the Karp, laid down in 1987. The submarine's refit is expected to be completed in 2017.

The Russian navy announced in early April that it expected to receive over ten modernized nuclear submarines by 2020.

"Zvedochka" shipyard stopped repair work on the submarine B-239 "Carp". Perhaps because of funding cuts
