The only problem is that the pixels on the Russian uniform are much too small, and from any distance appear to be one solid color,

    Is that actually a problem?

I mean up close you can see subtle shades and colours in an individual tree but as you move further back the different shades tend to merge into a common colour... isn't that what distance normally does?

Through magnifying optics you see the detail and it blends in, and from a distance you can't see the small details of the uniform or the back ground and they all merge into... well... hard to see.

    BTW I found some photos:

Okay, I see both of your points, thank you for the information.

I think the unknown pattern may actually be a variant of the Russian Palma Spring pattern, which apparently dates back to the mid 40's.

Russian Military Uniforms and Clothing - Page 2 Sposn-10

Here's a different version of the same pattern (Which I might add looks completely awesome).

Might be my new favorite camouflage pattern.

Part of the issue with the Russian and Soviet uniforms is that they really do have 4 distinct seasons, and much of the time just one pattern wont cut it.

The vast geography means it would be practically impossible to get away with one standard camouflage for all.

The practical problems of production and distribution mean that soldiers wear what they are given which might not be ideal for one local at that particular time of the year.

Also uniforms wear out at different rates and when you need new trousers if it came down to a choice of a different pattern and the correct size or the same pattern but several sizes too big or too small then I would go with the wrong pattern. Mechanised infantry will rarely blend into the background and the important thing is to break up the shape rather than look exactly like a tree.

I actually remember seeing a photo of a Spanish NATO exercise of this big open field with all these small bushes and the commander basically said that before his unit arrived there were no bushes so all the enemy needed to do was shoot at all the bushes because otherwise it was flat and open country... well it made me laugh... I personally think they should have selected a new camouflage while they were at it, but the uniform itself is definitely a nice improvement.

Not a camo expert, but I guess digital camo is what is considered most effective camo this day and age it seems. I prefer the look of just olive green BDU, but you have to kind of disregard what looks good and go with what's effective instead.

For the new uniform, I wonder what 'forma no. 3' will look like?

'forma no. 3' is what you wear normally indoors or outdoors in the summer; i.e. trousers, tunic, belt, head-ware.
Whereas 'forma no. 5' for instance is full winter-clothing, with the coat on.

So basically, what will the normal indoor dress wear of the uniform look like? I guess there is one picture there that corresponds.

Russian Armed Forces Complete Transition to New Field Uniforms

According to deputy defense minister, the Russian army has fully adopted new all-season sets of field uniforms.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – The Russian Armed Forces have fully adopted new uniforms, including in the Arctic region, Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov said Thursday.

"As we planned before the end of 2015, the Russian army has fully completed the transition to wearing new all-season sets of field uniforms, while soldiers deployed in the Arctic have been provided with new Arctic uniforms," Bulgakov told reporters.

The deputy minister added that officers, warrant officers and contract soldiers have all completed a full transition to a new form of casual dress code.

"To date, the Russian Armed Forces clothing supply service stands at 100 percent," he underscored.

Bulgakov specified that over 40 million articles of military uniforms have been distributed this year.
