The larger ships cost more, but have better endurance and are more comfortable to spend long periods on board, but a smaller boat with a support ship could certainly do the job cheaper and more efficiently tying up fewer people... (the support ship could support more than one small ship obviously).

The Indian ocean is still probably the hottest spot when it comes to piracy and the Russians seem to have lot of newly established interests in Africa and in particular the Indian Ocean area.
Stationing ships like the Bykov in places like Eritrea and further down south in Madagascar and Mozambique would be a great way to deter piracy. Even South Africa would willingly except some help from the Russians. Our navy do have a anti-piracy presence in the Mozambique channel but we only look good on paper.

Lots of poor lawless countries to base your operations makes such regions ideal for pirates, it is good that the Russian Navy is able to help shipping, and further production of ships for the Russian Navy will enable them to expand such operations.
It is not impossible that CIA infiltrators might coerce pirate groups to select transports carrying Russian goods as a sort of way of making Russian international trade less profitable and more risky... they may do the same with Chinese trade and of course we know they do it with Iranian and Venezuelan trade ships...
Cooperation with South Africa in a range of areas would be good for both countries...

From the graphic it appears to be similar to the Kalash kamikaze drone?

It is quite an interesting solution.
There are tons of targets that do not require a solid missile to destroy them.
While being too far for an on-board gun.
Loitering ammo seems perfect for it.

Against corvettes it will be deadly. Gznerally they have a douzen anti air missiles and would spend all of them agaibst such drones. They one antiship missile and the ship is dead.

One CIWS will knock it out of the sky though, or a large calibre gun. They don't move particularly fast.

They don't need to.
It is enough if those can reach a 3000m ceiling to make it immune to all but the main caliber gun.
Plus there are tons of other targets, a pirate boat to start with.

It is rather small and supposed to be stealthy and relatively quiet - esp if it has an electric motor. You will likely use it to deliver a surprise package!

They are slow but very manoeuvrable so it can attack from above at 90° where no weapon or radar can see it.

Re: Russian Navy: Status and News #5
October 30 - Foundation Day of the Russian Navy
The history of the Russian Navy goes back exactly 325 years. It is inextricably linked with the history of our state.
On this day, October 30, 1696, the Boyar Duma adopted a decree initiated by Peter I. in it, the citizens of the Russian state and the whole world were informed that "there should be sea vessels."
In those days, Russia was in dire need of a navy. It was necessary not only for the defense of the country's sea borders, but also for ensuring the safety of merchant ships sailing to other countries under the Russian flag. The appearance of powerful warships in Russia allowed it to overcome isolation and turn from a state of regional importance into a country with significant influence in the world.
Within a few years after its creation, the Russian navy forced the powerful naval powers of that time to reckon with themselves. He had many glorious victories, the first of which the Russian navy won in the Baltic.
Since then, the Russian Navy has been helping to strengthen the international authority of the Russian state and protect its maritime borders.
The foundation day of the Russian Navy is annually celebrated in our country on October 30. And since 1996, when naval sailors celebrated the 300th anniversary of the fleet, this holiday has become a double one. According to the order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, this day was also considered to be the Day of the sailor-surface sailor, since it was with surface ships that the Russian Navy began.
Today, the St. Andrew's flag flies over every warship of our country. Relatives, friends and command of the Russian Navy congratulate the sailors-surfacers.
The editorial staff of "Military Review" joins the congratulations to the naval sailors, veterans of the Russian and Soviet Navy. We are grateful to you for your service to the Fatherland and loyalty to duty. We wish you good luck, good health, as well as love and support of your loved ones.

The Russian Navy will replenish more than 40 ships and support vessels in 2021
Currently, the task of the naval presence in various regions of the world ocean is performed by more than 80 ships and vessels of the Russian Navy.
MOSCOW, October 30. / TASS /. More than 40 ships, submarines and support vessels will be added to the Russian Navy this year. This was stated by the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, on the occasion of the 325th anniversary of the founding of the Russian regular military fleet and Day of the sailor-surface sailor, which are celebrated on October 30.
"In 2021, the Russian Navy will receive more than 40 surface ships, submarines, support vessels and multifunctional boats. The naval shipbuilding program for a number of positions is being carried out ahead of schedule, which indicates a huge attention to the Navy," he said Evmenov in a congratulatory telegram sent to the command of the fleets and flotillas, as well as the crews of ships performing long-distance sailing missions.
The admiral noted that today the task of the naval presence in various regions of the world ocean is performed by more than 80 ships and vessels of the Russian Navy, "whose crews with honor and high professionalism perform their military duty, guaranteeing the prevention of threats in the sea and ocean areas."
The Boyar Duma, at the insistence of Tsar Peter I, on October 20 (according to the new style - October 30), 1696, adopted the resolution "Sea ships should be ...", which became the first law on a regular navy and was recognized as the official date of its foundation.

One CIWS will knock it out of the sky though, or a large calibre gun. They don't move particularly fast.
It is a loitering drone so you could have it fly at 8-9km altitude above manpads and western CIWS, and have it lase targets that could be engaged with laser homing 130mm and later 152mm artillery shells for naval gun support...
The 130mm rounds only reach about 25km, but the 152mm rounds will be reaching 70km and later models are supposed to more than double that range to 180km, which would make them rather interesting and useful... but you would need a cheap spotter to find and mark targets and observe the results and when it is out of fuel it could attack a target itself in a steep diving attack which most ships struggle with....
Most modern ships can deal with artillery shells and possibly UAVs... though a light stealthy electric powered UAV might be a problem with jamming shells being fired in their direction as well.
Even a modern capable ship would struggle dealing with a modern large calibre gun firing hundreds of rounds at them... especially if they are guided... new Russian laser guided artillery rounds include optical component that can see vehicles as targets... a ship at sea would be much easier to spot from the air above I would think.

Weren't those subs sent during the Cuban crisis and that US navy couldn't track and needed to wait for them to run out of air and surface to find them ?
Real beasts. Egypt has still some in service upgraded by China. I may mix the classes since plenty were made after WW2 but they were all similar to this one.

The freshly painted one is a specially modified Romeo class sub - the Pr633RV. Basically a combat diver (Spetsnaz)delivery sub.
The Pr.641 Foxtrot class were the ones involved in the Cuban Missile Crisis - like the one in the last picture next to the pier.
Edit: Looks like my info on the modified Romeos is not quite right? It appears the subs was modified to test the Veter and Vodopad ant-submarine missile complex. Maybe it was later used as a special delivery sub? It was definitely used as a training sub.

Shoigu announced an early transfer of the submarines "Prince Oleg" and "Novosibirsk" to the Navy
The Russian Navy is expected to receive the first serial nuclear submarines "Prince Oleg" of project 955A (code Borey-A) and "Novosibirsk" of project 885M (code "Ash-M") by the end of the year. This was announced on Wednesday, December 1, by the head of the Russian Defense Ministry Sergei Shoigu.
“In December, it is planned to transfer the first serial nuclear-powered cruisers Knyaz Oleg and Novosibirsk,” Shoigu said at a conference call.
Project 955 and 955A submarines belong to the fourth generation. The length of the nuclear submarine "Knyaz Oleg" is 170 m, the width is 13.5 m, it sinks to a depth of 450 m. The construction is carried out by the Sevmash defense shipyard.
In October, within the framework of state tests, the Bulava ballistic missile was successfully launched from the Prince Oleg from the White Sea.
Project 885 Yasen submarines (885M Yasen-M) are a series of Russian multipurpose nuclear submarines with fourth-generation cruise missiles. Their construction is also underway at Sevmash.
The nuclear submarine "Novosibirsk" was launched in October 2019. It is 130 m long and 13 m wide.
