China shut down several cities, and has been rather more restrictive than the US or UK, but then that has helped keep the death toll low...

Shutting down and isolating is a planned thing, it doesn't just happen naturally... they currently plan to lay down these ships... if there is a sudden spike in numbers with the virus they would stop work, but there is no reason to put everything on hold for a few years... that is just silly.

Frigates of the new 22350M project will receive 24 launchers for cruise missiles

Moscow. July 20. INTERFAX - The frigates of the modernized project 22350 will be equipped with 24 launchers for cruise missiles instead of the current 16, said the head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov

"Project 22350M differs from the ships of project 22350 in increased ammunition. 24 launchers will be placed on these ships instead of 16, which will significantly increase them combat effectiveness ", - said Manturov, quoted by the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

I think he made a mistake and is only talking about the ships that where laid down today and last year, not the 22350M.

Laid down the frigates "Admiral Yumashev" and "Admiral Spiridonov" of project 22350

On July 20, 2020, in St. Petersburg at PJSC Severnaya Verf Shipyard (part of United Shipbuilding Corporation - USC), a ceremony was held for the simultaneous laying of two frigates of the modified project 22350 for the Russian Navy, named Admiral Yumashev ( serial number 927) and "Admiral Spiridonov" (serial number 928). Embedment board of the frigate "Admiral Yumashev" (serial number 927) of the modified project 22350, laid down for the Russian Navy at PJSC "Shipbuilding plant" Severnaya Verf "in St. Petersburg July 20, 2020 (c) sun3-10.userapi.com / sdelanounas.ru

    Project 22350: Admiral Sergei Gorshkov #2 - Page 23 82239610

The ceremony was held via videoconference with the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, who was at the Zaliv Shipyard LLC in Kerch. At Severnaya Verf, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation Denis Manturov, Governor of St. Petersburg Alexander Beglov, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy for Armaments Igor Mukhametshin and Acting Director General of Severnaya Verf Igor Orlov took part in mortgaging frigates. The laid frigates will become the seventh and eighth ships of Project 22350, respectively, under construction by the Severnaya Verf Shipyard for the Russian Navy.

It is reported that these two ships, similar to the two laid down on April 23, 2019 frigates "Admiral Amelko" (serial number 925) and"Admiral Chichagov" (serial number 926) belongs to the modified project 22350 and will differ slightly from the first four frigates of project 22350 - in particular, they will receive reinforced strike weapons in the form of 24 vertical launchers of the UKSK complex instead of 16 on the first four ships.

Recall that the lead frigate of project 22350 "Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Gorshkov" (serial number 921), built at the Severnaya Verf, was laid down there on February 1, 2006, launched on October 29, 2010 and transferred to the Russian Navy on July 28, 2018 and entered to the Northern Fleet. The second frigate of project 22350 "Admiral of the Fleet Kasatonov" (serial number 922) was laid down at the Severnaya Verf on November 26, 2009 andlaunched on December 12, 2014, its acceptance certificate was signed on July 15, 2020, and the official transfer to the fleet is expected on July 21, 2020.

Also at Severnaya Verf, the construction of the third and fourth ships of Project 22350 continues - frigates Admiral Golovko (serial number 923, laid down on February 1, 2012, launched on May 22, 2020) and "Admiral of the Soviet Union Fleet Isakov" (serial number 924, laid down on November 14, 2013), and two ships of the modified project 22350 "Admiral Amelko" (serial number 925) and "Admiral Chichagov" (serial number 926), laid downApril 23, 2019. The laying ceremony for the Russian Navy of the frigates Admiral Yumashev (serial number 927) and Admiral Spiridonov (serial number 928) of the modified project 22350 at PJSC Shipyard Severnaya Verf in St. Petersburg on July 20, 2020 (c) RIA Novosti

Since there have been claims on this forum that the Palash CIWS on the Adm Gorshkov are fitted with missiles, I wonder if there is any proof of that...does anyone have a link with credible info or, even better, a picture?

I know that Palash is capable of being outfitted with missiles theoretically and is on other ships, but I think that would be a different version of Palash, so it's not just a matter of "bringing some missiles on board".
I'm asking since I was recently comparing the Gorshkov frigate to the German Sachsen class and it seems the Sachsen is indeed better at air defense than the Gorshkov (though IMO the Goshkov wins all the other categories); one reason for that is that the Sachsen, with its RAM-launchers, simply has many more AD-missiles than the Gorshkov (it also has longer-range AD-missiles and possibly a better search radar).

So, while trying to figure this out I looked at a large number of pictures of the actual Gorshkov ships and none seem to have missiles on their Palash systems; furthermore, multiple sources (esp. Russian ones) state that the Palash on the Gorshkov is a "ЗАК" (anti-air artillery complex), not a "ЗРАК" (anti-air missile and artillery complex). But I'm happy to stand corrected if anyone has a decent source (pics preferred) of missiles on the Gorshkov's Palash. If it is indeed true it would mean the Gorshkov unfortunately only has a limited ability to defend a group of ships from air threats, since a significant portion of its 32 Redut VLS cells would have to be filled with quad-packed short range missiles, leaving only about a dozen or so medium-long range missiles for creating the "air bubble".

Being a Frigate the Gorshkov wont be carrying many long or even medium range missiles... most of the missiles it will be carrying will be short range 9M100 and 60km range 9M96 missiles.

The Palma an Palash mounts are intended for fitting to light vessels and they are generally used instead of an AK-630 or Duet because the optical systems they use for targeting are pretty good, but unlike Kashtan and Pantsir they don't need two or three decks below for missile handling systems for reloading the missiles.

The mounts themselves are fully compatible with SOSNA laser beam riding missiles, which could probably be hand loaded if needed, but I wouldn't volunteer.

In a combat situation they might put 8 missiles ready to fire and when they are used up they are used up... shooting down 8 targets at 8-10km would be a good start to blunting any attack... the solid rocket boosters means the missiles get to max range in about 10-12 seconds so rapidly dealing with a few targets would actually be quite effective.

It is really only when you get to destroyers where you have ships that can defend themselves and think about defending other platforms, while a Cruiser is intended to protect and organise the protection of other ships... corvettes and frigates tend to look after themselves, though the electronics and communications means they would be able to share target and weapon and sensor information so two frigates together would be much more powerful at defending themselves than a single frigate with twice the weapon load...

There are no pictures with missiles mounted as far as I know.

As GarryB says the Palma/Palash mount is supposed to support Sosna
    Project 22350: Admiral Sergei Gorshkov #2 - Page 23 Sosn01
and one of the display models shows it with the missiles mounted
    Project 22350: Admiral Sergei Gorshkov #2 - Page 23 10753810

The Sosna program has been much delayed which I've assumed to be the reason it hasn't been tested on Gorshkov yet.
But the more recent info shown of it comes across as much more emphasis on anti-tank than ability to intercept anti-ship missiles.

I've been expecting to see either some kind of upgrade to fire the related Tunguska/Kashtan missiles or outright to Pantsir-M (at least for 22350M) but no sign of either yet.

Russian navy Project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov-class frigate reducers undergo successful trials

According to information published by the Russian press agency on October 27, 2020, the reducing gear produced by Zvezda enterprise for the power plants of project 22350 Admiral Gorshkov-class frigates successfully passed qualification trials and tests in a gas-turbine engine designed by Saturn, the enterprise said.

The qualification commission ruled that the enterprise is ready for batch production. The enterprise has been dealing with the large-scale project to produce RO55 reducers since 2017. Zvezda updated technical documentation, prepared the production of components and units, assembled and tested them, and created a test bench for the purpose.

The reducing gear provides 27200 HP full capacity of gas-turbine engine and 5096 HP of a diesel engine. The weight is close to 40 tons. It is a sophisticated technical product comprising of 5000 units. Only Russian components are used.

“Russia has never produced reducing gear of such capacity. It is the first sophisticated project. We coped with it and can supply the gear to the Russian Navy,” Zvezda Director for development Alexander Zinovyev said.

The enterprise had to update the design and upgrade the test bench during trials. The next stage will install the power plant on a warship built by Severnaya Verf Shipyard. Zvezda is constructing two more reducers for the next frigate.

Project 22350 also called Admiral Gorshkov-class is a guided missile frigate designed by the Severnoye Design Bureau and incorporates the use of stealth technology. As of August 2020, ten vessels have been contracted by the Russian Navy for delivery by 2027.

On 23 April 2019, two modified Project 22350 frigates, Admiral Amelko and Admiral Chichagov, were laid down at Severnaya Verf in Saint Petersburg. They will be fitted with 24 VLS cells for Kalibr, Oniks or Zircon cruise missiles, as opposed to 16 VLS cells installed on the first four frigates of the class.

The Sosna program has been much delayed which I've assumed to be the reason it hasn't been tested on Gorshkov yet.
But the more recent info shown of it comes across as much more emphasis on anti-tank than ability to intercept anti-ship missiles.

Would be interested to see any info you might have of anti armour use for Pine... it moves quickly but not anti armour quick...

Here is the manufacturers website... they have an english page but it is not ready yet... this is the Russian page:

    http://www.tulamash.ru/catalog/8

    It says on there:

The PALM anti-aircraft artillery system can be equipped with SOSNA-R anti-aircraft guided missiles with laser guidance and control equipment. The missile is designed to destroy aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, low-tonnage surface and small-size coastal targets.

But not for use against armoured targets as such.

These days I would add drones to the target list as these missiles are small and very fast and not too expensive.
