Features of the aircraft airborne early warning (AEW) A-50 you can use it anywhere in the world, said the United instrument-making corporation that developed these machines on the basis of military transport Il-76MD.

The specifications and functionality of the aircraft A-50 allow you to use it in any point of the Earth, told Tass defense industry specialist. According to him, the main task of the aircraft - the detection and tracking of air targets and surface ships, notification command posts of air and surface surveillance, control aircraft fighter and strike aircraft when hovering on air, land and sea targets.

According to the specialist, the A-50 - it's airborne command post, his main task - environment monitoring, detection and tracking of objects on the ground, air, water. It is able to simultaneously track up to 300 targets. UIC spokesman said that the aircraft is capable of detecting airborne targets at a distance of 650 km, land - up to 300 km. A-50 - an analogue of the American AWACS (from the English AWACS, Airborne Warning and Control System.), Equivalent in features, but even his superior in a number of characteristics.

Interestingly enough they did not replace cockpit equipment, i expected it to recieve at least partial IL-476 glass cockpit components. Seems like they do not expect these to serve for prolonged periods of time.

They are planning this, A-100 project, but it will be built from brand new frame Il-476, not modernization from existing A-50 stock.

Russia to get airborne command post based on Il-96 aircraft

Media called it "a doomsday plane", but the ministry notes the machine has nothing to do with the so-called doomsday aircrafts

Russia’s new generation "doomsday plane" to be created in 5-7 years — official

MOSCOW, July 5. /TASS/. An airborne command post based on the upgraded Ilyushin Il-96-400 aircraft and expected to be delivered to the Russian Defense Ministry this year is not "a doomsday plane," a spokesman for the United Instrument-Making Corporation told TASS on Tuesday.

Airborne command posts were called doomsday planes in the United States: they were expected to be used in case of a nuclear war, if ground command centers were destroyed.

The Russian Defense Ministry said earlier on Tuesday it would receive a specialized airborne command post based on the Il-96-400 plane this year. Some media sources reported that the Defense Ministry would get "a doomsday plane" based on the Il-96-400 aircraft.

"This is not a doomsday plane. These are journalists’ speculations. A completely different machine with different functions that has nothing to do with doomsday planes will be made operational for the Defense Ministry this year," the spokesman said.

United Instrument-Making Corporation CEO Alexander Yakunin told TASS last year that the third generation of airborne command posts also known as doomsday planes would appear in Russia in five-seven years. Later, the United Instrument-Making Corporation said that such planes would be developed on the basis of the Il-96-400 aircraft.

Russian Plane With AWACS-Styled Radar to Make Maiden Flight in 2018

Russia’s first plane with a long-range surveillance and control system will make its maiden flight in 2018, the local media cited a military source as saying Monday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The airborne A-100 Premier system will be set on an Ilyushin Il-76MD plane for the first test run due next year. It was dubbed an airborne lab and given the codename A-100LL.

"The aim is to test and fine-tune Premier avionics on an A-100LL and then move it onto an Il-476. If everything goes as planned, the ‘original’ A-100 will make the maiden flight in 2018," the source in the Defense Ministry told the Izvestia newspaper.

The airborne system will reportedly provide the military with surveillance, warning, and control capabilities, detecting fighter jets at a distance of more than 324 nautical miles and identifying ships at 216 nautical miles.

This is far greater than the range of the US-made Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS), dubbed "eye in the sky" by NATO.

Radar for Russia’s next-gen A-100 AWACS to be flight-tested next March – report
Russia’s brand new ‘flying radar’, reportedly capable of detecting enemy targets at ranges of more than 600km, will be flight-tested next March. The A-100 Premier will make her maiden flight by 2018, a defense source told Russian media. The Beriev A-100 is an airborne early warning and control (AWACS) aircraft currently being developed by Russia, an upgrade of the A-50. The long-awaited addition to the Russian Air Force has already been verified on the ground and are ready for in-flight equipment trials, the source told Izvestia newspaper. “At the moment, all deadlines have been set up and agreed with the military industry,” the source said. An older Il-76 version, the MD-90A aircraft – codenamed A-100LL during the flight tests – would be first used as a “flying laboratory” to stress-test all systems in the air. The trial is scheduled for March 2017, the source said. Once the flight tests are complete, the newest variant of the aircraft called Il-476, which was designated for the new ‘flying radar’, will accommodate the avionics and radar systems, including its distinctive rotating radar dome above the fuselage. “If everything goes as planned, the ‘original’ A-100 will make the maiden flight in 2018,” the source said. Most specifications of the A-100 are classified. The AWACS aircraft is expected to feature a new Active Phased Array Radar (APAR) designed by ‘Vega’ corporation. It is said to be capable of detecting enemy aircraft at ranges of up to 600km (373 miles) and warships at ranges of around 400km (249 miles). The aircraft is also said to have advanced signal intelligence for greater independence and electronic warfare capabilities for protection. An A-100 reportedly may be used as a fully-fledged flying HQ for the military. ..Long-range AWACS aircraft are operated by only a few countries, including Russia, the US, China and the UK. The older A-50 ‘Mainstay’ AWACS planes have been in use in the Russian Air Force since mid-1980s. As part of an ongoing re-armament and modernization effort, the Russian Air Force has received several A-50U, an upgraded version of the ‘Mainstay,’ throughout recent years. Along with extended airspace monitoring capabilities, the A-50U aircraft are said to have sophisticated digital avionics.. https://www.rt.com/news/356718-russian-new-awacs-a100/ The A-50U.. features the Shmel II. Their characteristics differ significantly." For example, the analyst pointed out that where the Shmel is capable of detecting a missile launch at 800 km, the Shmel II can do so at a distance of up to 1,000 km. Where the Shmel tracks fighters up to 300 km, the Shmel II does so up to 400 km. In detection of maritime objects,.. the old system is capable of simultaneously tracking up to 200 objects, Shmel II can track 300 objects at once, and provide 40 targets for interceptors, instead of 30. http://sputniknews.com/military/20160627/1042020932/russian-us-awacs-capabilities-analysis.html

So, what's the detection range'll be now? http://www.vega.su/production/detail.php?ID=567 Can new radars be back fitted on A-50Us? I also wonder if they can fly on 2 engines to save fuel & increase loiter time?

Russia’s Next-Gen A-100 AWACS Steps Ahead of US Counterpart

The Beriyev A-100 Premier “flying radar,” able to detect enemy targets hundreds of kilometers away, will be flight-tested next March, Izvestia wrote citing a Defense Ministry source in Moscow.

The A-100 airborne early warning and control (AWACS) plane also uses onboard electronics to jam enemy radar and communications and this is where it differs from its US counterpart.

“The American AWACS’ radio-electronic warfare station used to hamper the work of its own radar and was subject to interference from its onboard surveillance stations, which is why they eventually gave up on them which made their AWACS less effective and more vulnerable too,” defense expert Alexei Leonkov told the newspaper.

America’s fifth generation F-22 Raptors can’t do without AWACS support. To stay invisible, they attack with their radar switched off, relying entirely on targeting data provided by the “flying eye,” that has to fly within 400 kilometers of the combat area. Having no means of electronic “camouflage” the “flying radar” may fall easy prey to enemy air defense weapons, above all Russia’s S-400’s long-range missiles.

By contrast, the A-100’s onboard defense system does not interfere with the work of its radar while, at the same time, making the plane impossible to lock on and track.

The A-100’s maiden flight to stress-test all its systems in the air is slated for March of next year. If everything goes well, the “flying radar” will become operational in 2018.

The plane is built around a multilateration radar unit featuring a pair of phased-array antennas capable of detecting enemy fighter planes at a distance of up to 600 kilometers and surface ships up to 400 kilometers away.

“The A-100 is a classified project, but I believe they may be using compact UHF elements working both as receivers and transmitters. This will notably increase the radar’s range and accuracy. All our interceptors and air defenders will need is fire their missiles and forget,” Leonkov added.

The A-100, already nicknamed “a flying mushroom” due to the distinctive rotating radar dome above the fuselage, is an upgrade of its A-50 predecessor that first flew in 1978 and entered service in 1984.

It is not an accident that the R-37M long range AAM has a flight range of 380km.

It can hit targets pulling 9g, so an AWACS platform will be an easy kill in terms of Kinetics.

I am intrigued by this aircraft. I was wondering if they ever encountered problems with turbulence from the radar dome interacting with the high tail plane at high angles of attack.

    Some data on A-50 AWACS.

According to the known data, there are available 14 A-50 aircraft (of which at least nine in flight condition) and the first three A-50U, apart from at least two planes A-50 in storage. In March 2014 the representative of JSC "Radio Engineering Corporation" Vega "told RIA Novosti that the Air Force (VKS) Russia has a total of 22 A-50 aircraft, including those in storage.

Flight tests of Russia’s advanced aircraft radar to start next year

Russia’s A-100 Premier systems are currently being tested with the help of a flying laboratory created on the basis of the A-50 aircraft

MOSCOW, December 22. /TASS/. The flight tests of Russia’s A-100 Premier advanced aircraft radar are planned to start in 2017, United Instrument-Making Corporation CEO Alexander Yakunin told TASS on Thursday.

The Premier systems are currently being tested with the help of a flying laboratory created on the basis of the A-50 aircraft. The laboratory took to the skies for the first time this year, he said.

"Now checks of the electromagnetic compatibility of all the systems are underway along with the work to test protocols and regimes of information exchange and solve other design tasks. This is invaluable information, which helps maximally prepare the first A-100 serial-produced plane based on the Ilyushin Il-76MD-90A aircraft for flight tests, which are planned to begin next year," the CEO said.

According to the chief executive, this will be an absolutely new set of radar surveillance and observation with a considerably larger number of monitoring systems.

"A new computer center of incoming information processing has been established for this purpose along with operators’ new automated workplaces. The A-100 will be two or three times more powerful by its characteristics, including the target detection range, than its predecessor [A-50]," Yakunin said.

The A-100 is the next generation of long-range radar detection and control aircraft, which are employed to spot and track aerial targets and surface ships and inform command posts of automated control systems about the aerial and maritime situation. They can also be used for control of fighter jets and attack aircraft to aim them towards aerial, ground and sea targets and serve as an airborne command post.
