What is the best Russian food?

You mean pelmeny? They are considered simple and "student" food in my country.
Russian food is very popular in Latvia (being as one of ex-Soviet states). I personally like sorrel soup (also called green shchi), rassolnik and of course famous borsch (if made with chicken or without meat at all). These 3 are my favorite soup dishes. From second course, I will never refuse shashlyk (especially if it is chicken).
But msot usual Russian-like dish I like are boiled potatoes with herring and tvorog (cottage cheese). But I think this is more like Latvian dish, rather than Russian.

Depends how you look at it. Real "Russian" salad is actually "Vinegret" salad. But what we here refer to as Russian salad is actually Olivier salad as the guy it all started with was famous French-Belgian cook that worked in Sankt Peterburg restaurant Ermitraz.

The best on every grill is obviously Shashlik that was spiced over a day or more with vinegar, onions and few cups of vodka for several kg of meat. Nothing makes you drool more just from the aromatic smell and the taste is so tender.
Nothing beats russian cousine.

Pirozhki with pork or salmon is great. Rassolnik too, as we here have similar dishes and ofc pelmeni. Unlike 99% of people around me i quite enjoy Kvas too.

the only Russian food I have tried was caviar ... it is a acquired taste it's quite salty ... we don't really have Russian food in Scotland I would probably have to go to either Glasgow or Edinburgh to buy Russian food ... Polish food is more common in Scotland due to polish immigrants living in Scotland ... I've tried some polish stuff it's not what I'm used to
