There are military and civilian icebreakers...

The nuclear icebreakers needed for the LNG export.

The Russian LNG terminals are in the Yamal, they need the icebreakers to reach Japan/Asia in economical transit times.


At the moment the LNG export of Russia is about 55 bcm, equivalent of the Nord Stream II capacity.

They plan to double it, and increase even more after 2030, and for the investment/ operation they need lot of icebreaker support.

By the late 20s to early 30s they will be producing large volumes of copper, coal, and oil from the far north too. The growth in the icebreaking requirement will be considerable.

Why are we discussing Railroads and rail wheels on the "Icebreakers" tread?

Speaking of icebreakers, construction of the Yevpaty Kolovrat (project 21180M) is progressing very well at Almaz shipyard. It has been painted very recently.

Russian icebreakers will be equipped laser systems

That is interesting... I read they are putting lasers on their Icebreakers and I assumed it would be for weakening the ice ahead of the icebreaker so it can break it up more efficiently and go faster or go through thicker ice than it would be capable of without the laser...

But it is actually about oil and fuel spills in the arctic region which are normally very difficult to deal with.

This laser essentially burns the oil or diesel or kerosene or any other hydrocarbon spill and destroys it in place to prevent it remaining a hazard and injuring wildlife.
