Re: Soviet Afghanistan war
I would like to know why did the USSR invade Afghanistan in 1979? Pres. Carter was really angry that he boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics. The Americans at the time were angry. I want to know would American athletes have been threatened?

Re: Soviet Afghanistan war
Afghanistan was a USSR friendly nation and then when the Iranians kicked the CIA out of Iran they started moving into Afghanistan because they wanted spy bases in countries next to the Soviet Union.
The invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 was to kick the US out of Afghanistan and to make sure they stayed out.

Ex Pakistani MP5, some were obtained by Mujahadeens on black markets there, they were never supplied in numbers due to expencive and unavailable ammunition.

Re: Soviet Afghanistan war
An example of early Iranian support to the Muj.
Note the G3 rifle
Note the G3 rifle
Near Herat, Afghanistan- Afghan rebels snipe at Soviet-held positions near Herat January 11. The rebel raiding party, travelling by motorcycle and horseback, crossed from Iran into Afghanistan's Doab Valley in a three-day raid. Photographer Ishmael Ansary accompanied the raiders and made this set of pictures.

Pakistan had the same production lines, fun fact POF (Pakistan Ordnance Factory) would initially run its production lines on Iranian H&K presses. And even worse HIT Taxila would initially receive Iranian ordered Mk3/4 British parts for their decaying fleet, which were unfit and were returned and most importantly M113 and future Al Tahla (variant of M113). Later more Iranian ordered goodies would be given to Pakistan (like M60 based ARV's which Pakistan had not any tank to go with).
What is ironically more conducive of Iranian support for Al-Ansar ar Allah mujahids is the Mauser rifle which Pakistan did not posses (and Location of mujahidin at Iranian Border).
