Vietnam wants to buy two additional light frigates (displacement around 2000 tons and lenght 102m, so a bit smaller than the 20380 corvettes) of the gepard 3-9 class.

Vietnamese Navy already operates 4 such ships,  all built in Zelenodolsk shipyard (Tatarstan).

These are nice ships that could be appreciated by several other countries.  The only question is whether there already Russian gas turbines for them and if the ship design has been modified to accommodate them, or if they plan to get the engines from Zorya Mahsproekt in the Ukraine...

    Vietnam's fleet abandons Dutch corvettes

April 6, 2020 at 13:38 Theme: Asian Navy

Vietnam's naval forces decided to cancel plans to purchase from the Dutch group Damen Shipyards four corvettes based on the ships of the SIGMA 9814 project.TSAMTO, negotiations on the purchase of four new corvettes with the condition of building two units in the Netherlands and two in Vietnam have been ongoing for more than three years.

The decision to cancel the project was made in connection with potential problems in the procurement of equipment and weapons of Western production. As noted, this is due both to historical factors and to the modern politics of Hanoi.

According to VN Defense , during the negotiations it became apparent that very few Western countries are ready to supply Vietnam with the necessary equipment. Particularly problematic would be the purchase of Exozet French anti-ship missiles.

VN Defense recalls that after receiving South Korean Pohang class corvettes, the Vietnamese Navy had to re-equip them according to Vietnamese standards using Russian missile and artillery weapons.

It was planned that the arms of each SIGMA 9814 corvette project will include eight Exoset MM40 anti-ship missiles, 12 MICA VL anti-aircraft guided missiles, one 76-mm gun mount from the Italian Leonardo group, two 30-mm artillery systems MARLIN-WS, as well as Russian Ka-28 helicopters.

So if they abandon the plan to buy Dutch build corvettes (98m long) they will probably order an equivalent Russian or Chinese ship, with no strings attached for the equipment delivery...
