    The Zvezda Shipbuilding Complex is expected to manufacture tankers with a displacement of up to 350 thousand tons, LNG carriers, ice class vessels, specialized vessels, and offshore platform units in 2020.

    After 2020 this could be a good place to start production of military aircraft carriers...

    Shipbuilding complex "Zvezda" will attract 10 thousand new workers

    Ship-building complex is created on the basis of the factory "Zvezda" - the only in the Far East, specializes in the repair, refurbishing and modernizing ships nuclear missile submarines.

    VLADIVOSTOK, July 2 - RIA Novosti. Under construction in Primorye shipbuilding complex "Star" will attract 10 thousand new employees, according to the regional administration with reference to the governor of the region Vladimir Miklushevsky.

    "The complex will allow us to develop production, create new jobs, improve the tax base. Ten thousand is planned to attract professionals to work: some of them - residents of Primorye, part - the newcomers. They need to build housing with developed social infrastructure," - said Miklushevsky.

    He stressed that today there are four options for the future of housing professionals. One of them - the federal program "Housing for Russian families," the second option - the creation of cooperatives of shareholders, which allows you to build housing cheaper by 30%. It is also possible to build departmental housing. And planned construction of a kindergarten for 240 places to the 2018-2019 years.

    Plant "Zvezda" in Big Stone is a leading enterprise on repair of submarines of the Pacific Fleet and the only one in the Far East, specializing in the repair, refurbishing and modernizing ships nuclear missile submarines. Now here comes the creation of the shipbuilding complex "Star".

    The first phase of construction of the shipyard ends in 2016 (it is allocated 45 billion rubles), the second and third stages - in 2018. Start of production is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2016. It is expected that the complex will be engaged in the construction of ships for the development of hydrocarbon deposits on the Arctic shelf.

    The articles are strange. It makes it sound like that they are cutting back on the project but they are not. So I am not sure about the translations in the titles.  Even the articles themselves state project is ongoing in three stages.

    So there was an explosion at the st.pete shipyard due to poor safety practice of welding while painting....  minimum damage to infrastructure, equipment ect but 1 died and 7 injured.

    Seems to be a common problem with Russian inudstries and poor safety practices even though they had so many incidences and many were fired for it.  Seems everyone loves to skimp out on doing the job properly.

    Welding and painting at the same time, just read this to my dad "over shoulder" and he said he never heard of such practice in his life (military mechanical engineer).

    I dont know, it might be something considered as ok in shipyards, due to magnitude of the work etc, as my dad said even doing welding works on one side of the hull and painting on other wouldnt be a problem, especially with safety measues, however doing it in a way where they can come in contact is everything but smart.

    He says when tanks are being overhauled, painting section is always separated from mechanical area due to welding, tooling, sparks, hot pieces of metal etc. And firefighter is always somewhere around just in case. Was like that 35 years ago in Yugoslavia and we can say safety procedures were not really first priority back then ago as they are now.

    Heads need to roll.  I am not a welder but I know not to do this.  Whoever sanctioned the idea for it should be on the streets sweeping and manager in charge should be accompanying him.  Really really retarded.

    Will Rosneft Boost Russian Naval Construction?

    Russian Civil Shipbuilding Sector - Page 2 Capture

    Russian state-controlled oil giant Rosneft is turning Shipbuilding Complex (SSK) Zvezda into the country’s first large tonnage shipyard. TASS recently published a backgrounder that detailed what’s been happening there.

    Located in Bolshoy Kamen near Vladivostok, SSK Zvezda is supposed to produce the ships and equipment Rosneft needs to explore and exploit offshore oil and gas. However, it also has potential to boost Russia’s naval ship and submarine construction and repair in the Far East.

    Rosneft took over Zvezda in late 2015 in consortium with government holding company Rosneftegaz and Gazprombank. The effort to expand its civilian shipbuilding capacity began in 2009 as a partnership between state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation (OSK) and South Korea’s Daewoo. The latter quit the project in 2012.

    Having displaced OSK, Rosneft became principal holder of Far East Plant (DVZ) Zvezda and some small affiliated shipyards. DVZ Zvezda is the only Russian shipyard in the Far East capable of repairing and modernizing nuclear-powered submarines and ships up to 13,500 tons displacement. It began modernizing two project 949A Oscar II-class nuclear-powered guided missile submarines in 2013.

    This image shows the naval shipyard at top with its grayish roof, launch basin in front, and a submarine in drydock alongside if you look carefully. The SSK Zvezda facility is pretty much everything else — the reddish roof of the monstrous production building and the whitish buildingway with its yellow cranes visible.

    SSK Zvezda will produce a range of medium and large tonnage vessels, up to 350,000-tons displacement, and other sea-going equipment to support offshore hydrocarbon development in the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. It includes LNG carriers, tankers, drilling platforms, and transport, supply, and seismic survey ships.

    The shipyard currently has one 1,200-ton gantry crane made in China, two 320-ton gantry cranes, and four 100-ton tower cranes on its open buildingway. In July, the shipyard took delivery of a 40,000-ton transport-transfer dock built by the Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Company. Rosneft expects SSK Zvezda’s development to cost $2.4 billion.


    It reportedly will begin construction of medium-sized ships in 2019 with a workforce of 1,500 employees. By 2024, it expects to have a large-ship drydock and full-cycle fabrication facilities in operation with 7,500 workers. The shipyard’s order book already includes ten 80,000- to 120,000-ton tankers, ten shuttle tankers, and supply vessels. Leveraging DVZ Zvezda’s nuclear expertise, SSK Zvezda will also build three Lider-class nuclear-powered icebreakers, according to a September 14 announcement by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yury Borisov.

    President Vladimir Putin visited the shipyard on September 10 to lay the keel of a tanker. In 2017, he inaugurated the buildingway and transfer dock for medium-sized ships and participated in the keel-laying for four multipurpose ice-class supply ships. The Russian president personally commissioned a module production building in 2016.

    The development of SSK Zvezda may increase Russia’s capabilities for naval ship and submarine construction and repair in the Far East. DVZ Zvezda has struggled for years without modernization funding. However, it may be able to leverage the flow of Rosneft investment and Chinese shipbuilding technology, equipment, and experience into SSK Zvezda to improve its own production capabilities. A steady stream of large civilian projects next door may increase of quantity and quality of personnel available to DVZ Zvezda, and moderate the boom or bust cycle of shipbuilding that makes it difficult for Russian workers to stay in the Far East.

    Russia Wants Online Control Center for Shipbuilding Industry

    Shipbuilding department of the Russian Ministry of Industry & Trade ordered a study to be followed by an R&D project for development of a unified data collection and analysis system for shipbuilding companies. As a result, the ministry wants to get an informational dispatch portal capable to demonstrate online status and workload of Russian shipbuilding sector.

    "Significance of the shipbuilding products for the Russian economy induces the need for a continuous monitoring of all current industrial processes, evaluation of financial and technological status of the leading organizations, managerial influence on economic interests of shipbuilding companies to make their activities more effective", says the document of the ministry available to Mil.Press Today.

    Scope of reports that shipyards have to complete will continue growing due to the national course towards import substitution and diversification. This is one of the reasons why the ministry kicked off a sector-wide revision of documentation. The agency wants to figure out which reports are really important for decision-making, and digitalize them.

    The problem is that many shipyards and machine-building plants work on government orders and supply their products abroad. "The planned innovations... may potentially violate the state secrecy laws", states the document approved by Sergey Mamonov, acting director of Department of Shipbuilding Industry and Marine Engineering at the Ministry of Industry & Trade.

    So far, Center Research Institute remains the only company offered to analyse the whole Russian marine industry. The institute evaluated its services at 117 mln rubles, and in 2009 was authorized to collect and process the primary statistical and administrative data of defense and industrial companies.

    The state-funded study will last till the end of 2020, and only after that the ministry will form the order for R&D project. Meanwhile, the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) has already integrated some elements of online analytical system.

    "The USC’s common dispatch center is based on the corporate-level Program & Project Management System, which takes data from lower companies’ project management systems. As long as the shipbuilding industry does not have any standard for chart structure, we use the common ‘checkpointing’ methodology presented as a corporate standard. Currently, the system is being filled with data on the ongoing projects. The new projects are subject to the said system from the very beginning", a top-ranking source from USC told Mil.Press Today.

    Igor Ponomaryov, director general of Severnaya Verf shipyard shared in his interview to Mil.Press Today that the industry did not need any extra options like an online ‘dispatch center’. As for him, within one ship project, "currently, interaction between designers, shipbuilders and the yard is well enough aligned".

    Global digitalization of shipbuilding has been underway since 2016 under the R&D project Verf-M. The work involves creation of a specialized software information system for project management of construction of civil marine equipment and facilities, development of a unified industrial reference data system. According to sources of Mil.Press Today, implementation timelines were deferred.

    At the state level, digitalization of corporate reporting was mentioned by the governmental commission for IT usage in improvement of living standards and business conditions in the protocol dated December 18, 2017. The document set the task to create legal conditions for integration of new reporting collection rules, including statistical information.

    ARKHANGELSK, October 23. /TASS/. About 30 billion rubles ($459 million) will be invested within 17 years in development of the Krasnaya Kuznitsa shipyard in Arkhangelsk, the shipyard’s Chief Engineer Alexei Minayev told TASS, adding the Arkhangelsk Region’s government has granted a priority status to this project.

    The "Krasnaya Kuznitsa" (in Russian - Red Forge) enterprise is a branch of the Zvezdochka ship repair facility, a part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation.

    "Krasnaya Kuznitsa’s reconstruction and renovation will attract more than 30 billion rubles within 17 years," the chief engineer said. "That would be own and borrowed money; the borrowed money will make about a third part, and at most important stages, the United Shipbuilding Company will make investments."

    The project’s objective is to use Krasnaya Kuznitsa’s base to organize a modern shipbuilding and repairing enterprise for vessels in the North-Western Federal District. The new facility will also make elements for drilling rigs.

    "With this upgrade, the plant will begin a new life, focusing on civil shipbuilding and on construction of maritime equipment," the plant’s Deputy Chief Engineer Viktor Timoshkin told TASS. "We shall produce equipment for gas and oil fields - those are very big vast projects."

    Investments in the plant’s new equipment will make 13 billion rubles, and 17 billion rubles will be invested in construction and installation works. Besides, five new blocks of flats in Arkhangelsk’s Solombalsky District will cost another 1.2 billion rubles.

    "Thus, the new enterprise’s personnel will be more than 3,600 people, while now we employ slightly more than 300," the chief engineer said. "The biggest employment will be in about five years - more than 2,500 specialists."

    At the first stage, the enterprise will be upgraded to produce maritime equipment, and the second stage would be making infrastructures for civil shipbuilding. The third and fourth stages would be to support the enterprise’s competences in repairing the Navy’s vessels.

    "Implementation of this project is strategically important for the Arkhangelsk Region," the local administration’s press service quoted Governor Igor Orlov as saying. "By upgrading Krasnaya Kuznitsa, we shall keep the shipyard’s glorious traditions, and the enterprise and its specialists will have promising future."



    The enterprise’s history


    The history of Krasnaya Kuznitsa goes back to 1887, when the first workshops appeared at the Arkhangelsk port. In the 2000s, the plant went bankrupt, and in 2011 it became a part of Zvezdochka.

    "Back then, Zvezdochka bought this territory and the shops, everything was ruined here, and now we are reconstructing the plant," the deputy chief engineer said. "We are building the second couple of ice-class tugs, one of them is ready by 95% already, and earlier we have built a self-propelled vessel for the Far North.".

    Expanded mega shipyard "Zvezda" (Pacific Ocean, near Vladivostok) will employ over 10 000 people. Renovation and expansion cost ≈ $4.2bn.

    "Zvezda" will be the largest civil shipyard in Russia as well as a base for offshore equipment manufacturing and development. It will produce ships with water displacement up to 350000-tons, offshore platform infrastructure, reinforced ice-class vessels, special vessels and other types of marine equipment

    The yard is anticipated to be capable of starting construction of Arctic-capable oil tankers and LNG carriers by 2020.

    The shipyard facilities will feature the latest production equipment, robotic work cells, machine-driven and automated lines, standard jigs and fixtures and IT systems to support the high-tech production and the use of machines and automation.

    Two 100 ton cranes have been delivered to Russia’s new Zvezda mega-shipyard.

    The cranes are 94.5 meters (310 feet0 high with a reach of 81.7 meters (268 feet). They were built as part of a joint contract between Far Eastern Plant Zvezda and China Heavy Industry Corporation Nantong. The Chinese yard will deliver another three cranes by the end of the year: two with a lifting capacity of 320 tons and one with a lifting capacity of 1,200 tons.

    BOLSHOY KAMEN, November 15. /TASS /. The Zvezda shipyard has commissioned the steel cutting for a second 114,000-tonne deadweight (DWT) Aframax tanker. Rosneft CEO Igor Sechin and Acting Head of the Primorsky Region, Oleg Kozhemyako, attended the ceremony.

    The event marked the serial production launch of state-of-the-art, crude oil tankers at the Zvezda shipyard. According to Rosneft, Aframaxes will be the first vessels of its kind constructed in Russia. The lead ship is expected to set sail in 2020.

    "Tankers will be powered by two types of fuel, including gas, meeting the recent environmental requirements. The vessels are designed to cover an unlimited sailing area, and will ship crude oil and petroleum products, specifically via the Northern Sea Route," the Rosneft CEO noted.

    The first part of the shipyard’s production capacity was launched in 2016-2017, Sechin added, pointing out that the construction of Russia’s biggest dry dock is being conducted one year ahead of schedule with other facilities being built and designed. "Huge work on the creation of a long-term production program is being carried out with the country’s largest shipbuilding and oil and gas companies," he stated.

    Zvezda has over 30 contracts on its book of orders. The shipyard will build 25 tankers for Rosneft, including 10 Aframaxes, 4 ice-class support vessels, 10 tankers capable of navigating the Arctic with a DWT of 42,000 tonnes and one with a DWT of 69,000 tonnes.

    The Zvezda shipyard is being set up on the base of the Far Eastern Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Center by a consortium of Rosneft, Rosneftegaz and Gazprombank. The shipyard will produce heavy tonnage ships, offshore platform elements, ice-class vessels, special vessels, and other marine equipment.

    The yard was founded decades ago. But I guess it is easier to add new buildings/slipways and so on with modern equipment instead of removing old equipment and adapt the buildings to new one.

    Was my understanding that this was a very old but significant shipyard for the area, and that they actually expanded it and upgraded it rather than starting from scratch.

    The work was done by South Korea, and it should be as good as any shipyard in the world in terms of capacity and quality.

    Sovcomflot placed an order for the construction of three LNG tankers at the Zvezda shipyard

    MOSCOW, December 30th. / TASS /. The Sovcomflot group of companies placed an order for the construction of three new-generation product tankers that will use environmentally friendly gas-engine fuel (LNG) as the main one at the Zvezda shipbuilding complex (ZMK) Star. This was reported on Sunday in a company press release.

    Deadweight of vessels will be 51 thousand tons (MR size). Tankers are intended for transportation of petroleum products and gas condensate and will be chartered by PJSC Novatek on the basis of long-term time charter contracts. Ice Class 1B will allow ships to safely transport in areas with difficult ice conditions - in particular, in the Baltic Sea. The supply of tankers is scheduled for 2022-2023 ", - said in a statement

    The technical characteristics of the vessels have been developed taking into account international conventional emission limitations for sulfur oxides, nitrogen and greenhouse gases, which will come into force in 2020.

    The company noted that compared to traditional types of fuel, the use of LNG can significantly reduce emissions to the atmosphere: sulfur oxides (SOx) - by 100%, nitrogen oxides (NOx) - by 76%, carbon dioxide (CO2) - by 27% , low dispersed particles - 100%.

    Would add that shipyards require very specific areas on land and under the water... most places ideal for shipping are already used as ports, so upgrading existing ports makes rather more sense that finding a new place to locate a port as that might require very extensive work on land and under water to prepare for use with ships of all sizes.

    Currents might result in a build up of sand that needs to be constantly dredged to keep open, while other natural harbours might need very little work to keep open.

    BTW those LNG powered ships sound excellent in terms of pollution reduction... just awesome...
