It is popular in Ukraine, the Baltics and other ex-USSR states that drank the western propaganda koolaid
to believe they were subsidizing Russia.  As of 1990 only Russia and Belorus were net producers.   The
Baltics are egregious in terms of being subsidized.   This makes their BS about Russian "exploitation" even
more galling.

Not old news. That's why whole economies collapsed. Problem is different. You couldn't wipe Your arse without Moscow telling You how to do it.
Pretty much Moscow subsidized Baltics to keep it in check. Not because soviets had such good heart. Same as Northern Ireland is subsidized by England to keep them guys from ripping each other throats.
Question is - why Russia was so fucked up in Soviet Union if Baltics for Russians looked like Malaya zagranica?

All republics against Belarus were a liability to the Soviet budget and consumed far more than they contributes. A bit like Eastern European EU members today.

I think you meant all the republics except for Belarus, Russia, and Estonia, were the money sinks.


What is amazing is that Belarus suffered horrendous human and material losses during the Second World War.

On a per capita basis they were even worse than Poland's and, by the same token, they were the worst in the world.

So, most SSRs are worse off today than before they were a part of the Soviet Union

The west is not paying as well... they don't want to encourage rivals and they don't have the ties to these regions that Russia had so there is no loyalty except that at the moment these countries are helping them against Russia... but they have that for free...
