Repair of the nuclear deep-water station AS-31 is postponed

As TASS news agency reported on June 25, 2020 , work to repair the damaged AS-31 submarine-based manned submarine damaged on July 1, 2019 (unofficial name "Losharik") was postponed to 2021. About this TASS reported two sources.

"This year, the operation to unload the reactor core on the Losharik special submarine will not be carried out, it switched to 2021. The old AS-15 apparatus is the first in line for such an operation at the Zvezdochka Ship Repair Center (CS)," said one of the sources.

The second source confirmed this information, noting that "the AC-31 is not the first in the queue for unloading the core and subsequent repairs."

The press service of Zvyozdochka did not comment on TASS information provided by sources.

Losharik was delivered for repair to the Zvyozdochka Central Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) in the fall of 2019.

The Ministry of Defense on July 2, 2019 reported that a fire broke out on a military research deep-sea vehicle ,which killed 14 submarine officers. The device was delivered to the naval base in Severomorsk, where a commission began to work to investigate the causes of the disaster.

    AC-31 and AC-15

The existence of a secret submarine AS-31 became known in 2003 from the publication of the Korabel newspaper, produced by the Sevmash plant, where the apparatus was built. In the same article, the unofficial name "Losharik" was mentioned. According to the publication, the workers nicknamed this new submarine due to the fact that its robust hull of several spherical compartments outwardly resembled a toy horse made of balls - the hero of a cartoon popular in the years 1970-1980. According to open sources, the submarine AS-31 belongs to project 1083, was launched in 2003.

The deep-sea vehicle AS-15, the repair of which will begin earlier than Losharik, according to open sources, is the second special submarine of the 1910 Sperm Whale project, launched in 1983. AS-15 in 2000 was involved in the search and rescue operations of the sunken submarine Kursk. Like the Losharik, the AS-15 is under the jurisdiction of the Main Directorate for Deep-Water Research of the Russian Defense Ministry.

At the nuclear deep-water station AS-31, the core of the nuclear reactor was unloaded
    April 2nd, 14:50

As reported on March 31, 2021 by the TASS news agency , specialists of the Zvezdochka ship repair center (CS) (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) in Severodvinsk completed the operation to unload the nuclear reactor core from the AS-31 submarine manned vehicle (unofficial name Losharik) ... This was reported to TASS by a source close to the military department. Nuclear deep-water station of the 1st rank AS-31 project 10831. Severodvinsk area, 2014 (c) Top Gear

"In order to restore and return to the Russian Navy, the AS-31 operation was completed in March to unload the reactor core from the damaged special submarine. It lasted about a month," he said.

According to him, an audit of the submarine found that its titanium hull was practically not damaged, so immediately after that, work began on repairs with the modernization of Losharik. During the repair, the replacement of the nuclear reactor is not planned, the source said.

The press service of TsS "Zvezdochka" did not comment on the information provided by the source.

A fire on the AS-31 special-purpose nuclear submarine occurred on July 1, 2019 and claimed the lives of 14 submariners. Among the causes of the disaster, the media namedexplosion and fire of the lithium battery. The submarine's reactor was not damaged in the fire. In November 2019, the submarine was delivered to the Zvezdochka CS.

The number of the project and the tactical and technical characteristics of the AS-31 are not officially disclosed, it is only known that it does not carry weapons and can dive to great depths. Due to the specific shape of the body - several titanium spheres connected to each other - she was nicknamed "Losharik" after the horse made of balloons from the 1971 cartoon of the same name.

Looks like they are converting K-44 Ryazan into a special purpose submarine.

(Its a Delta 3 submarine (the last one active) but could not find a dedicated thread for that class so posting it here)

Ships and submarines in service with the Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research

This article will discuss one of the most secret units of the Russian Ministry of Defense - the Main Directorate for Deep Sea Research (GUGI). GUGI is directly subordinate to the Ministry of Defense and is engaged in deep-sea and oceanographic research, search and rescue of sunken ships, physiological studies of the effect of great depths on the human body, tests of emergency rescue equipment.

Service in the GUGI on special nuclear submarines and nuclear deep-water stations (AGS) is considered the most dangerous and responsible. Diving depths of 3-6 kilometers, secret tasks of state importance, the need for high technical literacy, knowledge of the operation of units and assemblies, psychological stability required the formation of crews exclusively from officers and a medical board for selection, similar to that for astronauts.

The GUGI hydronauts are the elite of the Russian submarine forces. The work of the 10th detachment of hydronauts of the GUGI was awarded the Order of Nakhimov. Apart from them, only the crews of the cruisers "Peter the Great", "Varyag" and "Moscow" were awarded this order. It is the hydronauts and their work that are the most secret part of the GUGI.

The Main Directorate of Deep-Sea Research is armed with surface ships, nuclear submarines and deep-sea vehicles. Let's consider them in order:

Source: Losharik will return to service no earlier than 2025

Repair and restoration of the AS-31 nuclear submarine of project 10831 (unofficial name - Losharik) is planned to be completed in 2024. On Monday, January 9, TASS was informed by a source close to the military-industrial complex.

"To date, a new reactor core has been loaded on the boat, the installation and adjustment of the latest hydroacoustic, navigation and special equipment to replace those damaged or destroyed in a fire is underway. The work is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2024, after which the apparatus will be tested approximately within the next year" , - he said.

According to him, the nuclear submarine's titanium hull was not damaged during the fire, which will provide the device with the previous maximum immersion depth.

"However, in order to avoid possible risks, the immersion depth can be reduced, but only slightly," the source said.

TASS does not have official confirmation of this information.

Recall that on July 2, 2019, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation announced the death of 14 submariners in a fire on a deep-sea vehicle. "Thanks to the selfless actions of the crew, the source of ignition was eliminated," the press service of the military department said at the time.

Later, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu clarified that the fire had occurred in the battery compartment of the nuclear submarine. He also noted the heroism of the dead officers of the Main Directorate of Deep Sea Research of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

According to him, in the event of a fire, they first of all evacuated a civilian specialist on board from the compartment engulfed in fire, after which they continued the fight for survivability, sacrificing their lives to save the apparatus.

In the fall of 2019, Losharik was delivered to Zvyozdochka for repairs. At the end of November of the same year, it was reported that work had begun on board the damaged deep-sea vehicle.
