Islamic State Seizes North Iraqi Town, Nearby Oil Field

MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti) – Islamic State militants seized the town of Zumar in the north of Iraq and the nearby oil field on Sunday after defeating Kurdish peshmerga fighters, who control the area, Reuters reported citing the witnesses.

Before the planned occupation, the militants warned the civilians in the area to leave their homes.

Earlier on Saturday Reuters reported that Kurdish forces managed to hold off the Islamic State insurgents attack and maintain the control over the town of Zumar and the nearby oil field. Then, as a result of a firefight, 14 Kurdish military were killed. On the attackers' side about 100 people died and 38 were taken captive.

According to the earlier reports, Islamic State militants control most oil and gas fields in Iraq and Syria and sell crude oil to finance the network of their activists in Damascus and Baghdad.

The Islamic State is a Sunni group that has been fighting in Syria against the country’s president, Bashar Assad, and launched an offensive in Iraq in June, taking over large parts of the country, with the goal of seizing Baghdad.

In June, militants from Islamic State announced establishing of a caliphate on Iraq-Syria border. The Islamist caliphate includes regions with Christians and other religious minorities.

Islamic State Seizes Control Over Iraq’s Largest Dam

MOSCOW, August 3 (RIA Novosti) – The Islamic State militants have seized control of Iraq’s biggest dam, an oilfield and three more towns in the country’s north on Sunday, Reuters has reported, citing witnesses.

Concerns grow that the terrorists could use the dam to flood major Iraqi cities or deprive them of water.

The militants on Sunday seized the towns of Wana and Sinjar.

Eyewitnesses said local residents had fled after Kurdish peshmerga fighters, who control the area, put up little resistance.

«Hundreds fled, leaving vehicles and a huge number of weapons and munitions, and the brothers control many areas," the Islamic State statement said. «The fighters arrived in the border triangle between Iraq, Syria and Turkey."

Earlier Sunday, Islamic State militants seized the town of Zumar in the north of Iraq and the nearby oil field after defeating Kurdish peshmerga fighters.

Before the planned occupation, the militants warned the civilians in the area to leave their homes.

The Islamic State militants reportedly control most oil and gas fields in Iraq and Syria and sell crude oil to finance the network of their activists in Damascus and Baghdad.

Kurds Plan Counter-Offensive Against Islamic State - Reports

MOSCOW, August 4 (RIA Novosti) - Kurdish armed Peshmerga forces are planning to launch a counter-offensive against Islamic State (IS) militants in Iraq's north, Reuters reported on Monday, citing senior Kurdish officials.

“We will attack them until they are completely destroyed, we will never show any mercy," the news agency quoted a Peshmerga colonel as saying.

"We have given them enough chance and we will even take Mosul back. I believe within the next 48-72 hours it will be over," the colonel said.

Earlier in the day, Reuters reported that Islamic State militants seized the town of Zumar in northern Iraq and a nearby oilfield Sunday after defeating Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, who largely control the area. Some 14 Kurdish military were killed as a result of a firefight, while about 100 people died and 38 were taken captive from the Islamic State.

According to earlier reports, Islamic State militants control most oil and gas fields in Iraq and Syria and sell crude oil to finance their network of activists in Damascus and Baghdad.

Iraq Army to Support Kurds Against ISIL

On Monday Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki called on his country's air force to fight against the advance of Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) extremists by helping the Kurdish forces in Northern Iraq.

Iraq's military spokesman, Lieutenant General Qassim al-Moussawi to Iraqi State television that Maliki instructed the Iraqi air force to provide aerial support to the Kurdish Peshmurga.

"The terrorist gangs…have taken control of Mosul Dam…," Iraqi state television said.

On Sunday, the ISIL terrorists took control of Iraq's biggest dam, the Ain Zalah oil field as well as the towns of Sinjar and Wana near the city of Mosul.

Meanwhile, the leftist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) urged Kurdish unity against ISIL on Monday, with its allied Kurdish People´s Protection Units providing support to the Peshmerga.

"All Kurds in the North, East, South and West must rise up against the attack on Kurds in Sinjar (in Northern Iraq),"said the PKK in a statement on its website.

According to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, up to 200,000 have been displaced from Sinjar due to the ISIL takeover.

Iraqi Kurds Fight Islamic State Militants Near Erbil - Reports

MOSCOW, August 6 (RIA Novosti) - Armed groups of Iraqi Kurds engaged in fights with Islamic State (IS) militants 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the city of Erbil, the Kurdish regional capital, Reuters reported Wednesday, with reference to Jabbar Yawar, the secretary-general of the ministry of Peshmerga fighters.

“We have changed our tactics from being defensive to being offensive. Now we are clashing with the Islamic State in Makhmur,” Yawar was quoted as saying.

The secretary-general also said that the Kurds had re-established military cooperation with Baghdad in attempts to drive IS fighters from the region.

The Islamic State seized three towns during its weekend offensive, among them the town of Sinjar, which is home to many Yazidi Kurds. About 50,000 Yazidis are hiding in the mountains, blocked by the militants and at risk of starving to death if help is not provided within 24 hours.

The United Nations Security Council condemned the attacks on the Kurds and called on all Iraqi communities to unite and respond to the threat to Iraq’s future.

The Islamic State is a Sunni group that has been fighting in Syria against the country’s president, Bashar Assad. The IS launched an offensive in Iraq in June, taking over large parts of the country, with the goal of seizing Baghdad. Also in June, the group announced the establishment of a caliphate on the Iraq-Syria border. The Islamist caliphate includes regions with Christians and other religious minorities.

Islamic State Captures Three More Towns in Northern Iraq

MOSCOW, August 7 (RIA Novosti) - Islamic State (IS) militants seized three towns in addition to an oil field in northern Iraq, Reuters reported Thursday.

Witnesses reported to Reuters that the latest advance ended with the capture of Makhmur along with Tilkaif and Al Kwair, increasing the group’s presence near Kurdistan Region.

The advance began last weekend when Sunni militants defeated Kurdish forces in the north. The attack Sunday resulted in the capture of Zumar, Sinjar and Wana.

IS continued its attacks Wednesday, fighting Kurdish forces in Makhmur located near Arbil, capital of the semi-autonomous Kurdistan Region.

The weekend’s attack was focused on Zumar and its nearby oil field and refinery, RT news reported. IS also took control of the largest dam in Iraq, the Mosul Dam near the captured town of Wana.

The Islamic State, formerly known as Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) has declared a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria already under its control. The capture of oil fields provide the Islamic militants with additional funding for their goal of controlling Muslim-inhabited regions of the world. IS started its operation in northern Iraq in June.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest also announced that the United States will begin a humanitarian air-drop mission to aid the trapped Yazidi and Christian popluations in Northern Iraq, which are threatened by the militant Islamic extremist group Islamic State (IS).

Let me explain something for those of you who don't know.

Despite all the fuse ISIS doesn't really score high lately. Their idea was simple: "Since we can't make our way in Syria why don't trans pass in Iraq take Baghdad and establish there our regime."
But they had to take Baghdad! They had to consolidate else they would have been between a rock and a hard place. Even worse they knew that the Iraqi government would consolidate, Iran would help like always tremendously, the world stage will turn against them and the local population even the Kurds do the same.
Finally Russia backed Iraq more than anyone after the resolution of the Soviet Union and this is something they probably didn't anticipate.

So US foreign policy had to do something! They knew that Iraq would turn completely against them if Eastern powers would remain alone to support them. They also had sent to ISIS a message. That they created ISIS in order to create havoc in Syria and probably Levant not in Jordan or Iraq and want them to return back in Syria as fast as possible.
So they created this false flag idea that all of a sudden people are starve in the mountains or Christian populations are under hazard so that they can step in bomb a few empty lands "solve" a problem that really wasn't there and then brag about their important role... to take again the terrorists back to Syria where they really ordered them to be.

I hope I helped you clarify a thing or two.

One of Obama's main promises before the elections in 2008 was to end US involvement in Iraq. He can't start a new war in IRaq cuz even though he will not take part in presidential elections anymore, his party will suffer a defeat in 2016.

Maliki pretty much brought the entire thing on himself. After US withdrawal he stopped paying Sunni militias to not fight him - and bribing them was the sole reason why coalition forces managed to suppress ISI(S) in 2006-7.

I doubt Obama cares much about the next election... he will take no part in it.

Besides Guantanimo is still a concentration camp... he promised to close it the first time he got elected into office.

Kurdish Forces Take Back Two Towns Occupied by Militants in Iraq – Reports

MOSCOW, August 10 (RIA Novosti) – Kurdish forces have regained control of two towns in northern Iraq seized by Islamic State militants, Agence France-Presse reported on Sunday.

"The Peshmerga (Kurdish fighters) have liberated Makhmur and Gwer," Peshmerga spokesman Halgord Hekmat told AFP.

Hekmat said "US aerial support helped” to liberate the towns. Representatives of the regional authorities also confirmed that the Kurdish troops had recaptured the towns following fierce battles.

Late on Thursday, US President Barack Obama gave the green light to US airstrikes targeting positions of Islamic State (IS) militants fighting in Iraq against Kurdish forces defending the city of Erbil. The President also authorized humanitarian aid to Yezidi Kurds who, as Obama stated, face “genocide.” Several airstrikes have been conducted over the past few days.

The Sunni group Islamic State (IS), previously fighting in Syria and known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS), seized large parts of Iraq in early June, ratcheting up tensions in the region. In late June, the Islamic State announced the establishment of a caliphate on the territories it had captured in Iraq and Syria.

US Conducts New Airstrikes on Iraqi Extremists – Reports

MOSCOW, August 10 (RIA Novosti) - The United States conducted four additional airstrikes on positions of Islamic State (IS) militants, who took control of several provinces in Iraq, Associated Press reported Sunday, citing the US military.

According to the agency, the operation involved manned and unmanned aircrafts of US Air Force.

One truck and several armored vehicles, which reportedly were used by the militants to fight civilians, were destroyed as a result of the airstrikes.

The US military estimated the operation as successful. No casualties among IS militants were reported.

This is a third round of airstrikes conducted by the United States in Iraq. Earlier on Friday, Pentagon Press Secretary Rear Admiral John Kirby said the US military conducted two additional airstrikes to help defend the Iraqi city of Erbil.

Kirby also noted that four F/A-18 aircraft struck a convoy of seven vehicles and a mortar position of Islamic State militants near Erbil.

Prior to that, Pentagon has announced that US combat aircraft conducted an airstrike on positions of Islamic State militants fighting in Iraq against Kurdish forces defending the city of Erbil.

US President Barack Obama gave the green light to US airstrikes on IS targets late on Thursday, saying that the offensive would seek to lift the IS siege of Erbil to prevent the "genocide" of the Yazidi population.

The Islamic State is a Sunni group that has been fighting in Syria and launched an offensive in Iraq in June. The group has taken over large parts of the country, with the goal of seizing Baghdad. Also in June, the group announced the establishment of a caliphate on the Iraq-Syria border.

Iraqi Kurds have already re-established military cooperation with Baghdad in an effort to drive the IS fighters back. Like Moscow, the United Nations Security Council has called on all Iraqi communities to unite and respond to the threat to Iraq’s future.

Congratulations... most westerners are savy enough to know their government lies to them... Hilary Clinton admits it all the time that they have to lie to do their job.

The main problem is that most westerners think only bad governments ie Communist/Nazi/Imperial Japanese etc etc tell real lies and that when comparing what the US/UK/West says that Russia/Iran/Cuba/China etc must be the liars and in this case the west tells the truth. The west is a force for good in the world and the world would be in trouble if China was in charge.

That of course makes the assumption China even wants to be in charge... they might just want a free and fair world to trade in... it is the west that controls and wants to continue to control the world.

I am very much hoping that successful cooperation over Iraq between Russia and the US and of course the Iraqis themselves might remind the US that there is huge potential and that Russia and the US can achieve rather more together than at each others throats... and all the US has to do is treat Russia as an equal partner instead of a door mat... in fact the sooner the US stops treating most countries like a door mat the sooner they will find they are rather less hated and rather more admired around the world... your problem is your politicians and I don't think a new Bush or a new Clinton can make the change... so it is more than likely more of the same... The problem is that this people have no democracy.
They have REGULATED a two-party system and the game is that they throw them endlessly like ping pong to either side of an equally corrupted and self-serving system
and any attempt to brake this unholy duo stops in it's tracks by a bombardment of media demonetization.
