d_taddei2 wrote:hi i was wondering if anyone had an update on the number and what aircraft Russia is currently using in Syria, I know there 4x Su-30 and 4x Su-35, but not sure the numbers on the rest of the aircraft.

And i know this highly doubtful but anyone know the same details for SAAF?

I am guessing that they probably have anything between 50-65% of what they had prewar, although some aircraft numbers might be slightly higher due to Russia giving a helping hand with repairs and Iran donating a handful of Su-22. So what i think they currently have is as follows:

    Mig-29 x24
    Su-24 x16
    Mig-23 x50 (all variants)
Mig-21 x70 (not including trainers and recce)
    Su-22 x30 (including Iran's donation)
    Mig-25 x6
    L-39 18 (attack version)
    Mi-24 x 16
    Mi-2 x 8
    Mi-8 x 40
    Gazelle x 12

So the Mig-21 and Mig-23 is the mainstay of the SAAF, and have been true saviours and workhorses for them. These numbers for all aircraft would no doubt be much lower if it wasnt for Russia giving a helping hand with repairs. The only thing they might struggle with in relation to repairs would be the Gazelle as its unlikely they would be getting any spares from France however these are pretty basic and reliable heli's. The Mig-25 number is pretty generous as i would imagine these would have been forgotten about due to the cost of running them, i think 6 might still be in reasonable shape but probably arent being used. The L-39 are cheap to run and maintain and good enough for ground based attacks, no doubt Russia is cannibalising its L-39's coming out of service to give parts to Syria. And Mig-21 trainers and recce will no doubt have been used for spares to the armed versions going. Am I being too generous with the numbers? like i said without Russian help i think these numbers would be much lower.

    Maybe this can help

Russian President Vladimir Putin has submitted an agreement with Damascus on the deployment of a Russian air force group in Syria for ratification by the lower house of parliament, an entry in the official database of the State Duma confirmed Tuesday.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – On July 29, the Russian cabinet approved the accord on the deployment of the Russian air force group in Syria, and submitted to Putin for its further referral to the lower house of parliament for approval, according to a legislative act published on the official portal for legal information.

It is noted in the text that the Hmeymim air facility in Syria, its infrastructure and territory are granted to Russia free of charge. The agreement was signed in Damascus on August 26, 2015.

As it stands, they can even send a similar corps as in Ukraine, for the front in Aleppo that thing would have been a saviour.

Russia should terminate any diplomatic relation with America immediately. This is why.

The Russian Air Force launched a series of non-stop airstrikes over the southern sector of Aleppo City on Tuesday morning, targeting the jihadist rebel defenses at the Al-Ramouseh and Al-‘Amariyah districts.

According to a military source in Aleppo City, the Russian Air Force fired 3 ballistic missiles at the Artillery Academy, marking the first time that the latter has attacked this military installation since it fell last week.

These Russian airstrikes over southern Aleppo were conducted in conjunction with the Syrian Arab Army’s (SAA) missile assault against Jaysh Al-Fateh (Army of Conquest).

Alqaeda does not have air defense to intercept any missile , so it will be pointless to use Russia most expensive conventional missile on its arsenal ,a missile that was designed to bypass
NATO aegis defenses. So to do the job in Syria, Russia might just simply fill a refrigerator with TNT and drop it above terrorist heads. it will be far cheaper and no technology will be at risk to be captured by NATO through their headchoppers . If it was an airforce , bombing , no idea if they can launch ballistic missiles , there will be no point in the missile to go up and then down and follow a ballistic trajectory ,since rebels do not have air defenses to counter them.

What will be nice is for russia to drop a FOAB bomb. and fully film it.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) — The first Russian-Turkish committee on Syria will hold the first meeting on Thursday, a spokesman for Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday. "The first meeting will be held tomorrow, the delegation will go to Moscow this evening," Ibrahim Kalin told the Turkish A Haber broadcaster.

Erdogan visited St. Petersburg on Tuesday to have talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after seven months of strained relations following the November downing of a Russian military aircraft by Turkey. The two leaders agreed to develop bilateral ties, returning to the pre-crisis level of cooperation in trade, energy and defense and other spheres.

Earlier in the day, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Ankara and Moscow were working on a "reliable mechanism" to deal with Syria crisis settlement.

Have now read this http://johnhelmer.net/?p=16253 account on the events at the actual meeting in Russia. We should not hold our breaths waiting for something positive to happen. Looks like Erdogan is in this up to his neck and is going nowhere.

VKS strategic bombers are at it again. Chemical weapons factory outside Raqqa got smoked.  thumbsup

Big juicy targets and perfect bullseye with carpet bombing. Excellent!  russia

I don't think Tu-22 pilots ever imagined they will be putting this much mileage on those birds outside WW3. Or any at all.

Turkey to resume airstrikes on ISIS in Syria, asks Russia to fight 'common enemy'

Turkey will resume airstrikes on Islamic State targets in Syria, and has asked Russia to carry out joint operations against its “common enemy.” Ankara halted strikes after the downing of a Russian plane by Turkish forces last year.

In an interview with Turkey's NTV television on Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusolgu said that Ankara “will again, in an active manner, with its planes take part in operations” against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) targets.

Cavusolgu also said that Ankara has called on Moscow to carry out joint operations against the “common enemy” of IS.

"Let's fight against the terrorist group together, so that we can clear it out as soon as possible," Cavusolgu said, adding that otherwise IS will continue to expand and spread into other countries.

"We will discuss all the details. We have always called on Russia to carry out anti-Daesh [IS] operations together," he said, adding that the proposal is still "on the table."

The foreign minister went on to tout the benefits of closer cooperation between Turkey and Russia, particularly in preventing incidents like the downing of the Russian plane by Turkish forces in November 2015.

"Many countries are engaged in Syria actively. There could be mistakes," he said. "In order to prevent that, we need to put into practice the solidarity and cooperation [mechanism] between us including sharing of real-time intelligence."

The Wednesday statements signify a warming of ties between Turkey and Russia, whose relationship soured following the downing of the Russian plane last year. Russia retaliated by deploying long-range air defense missile systems to its base in Syria and implementing a range of economic sanctions against Ankara.

The comments came just days after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited St. Petersburg for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, in the first meeting between the two leaders since the plane was downed.

Following the Tuesday meeting, Putin announced that Russia would begin rolling back sanctions and restarting energy projects, including a stalled nuclear plant and the Turkish Stream gas pipeline from southern Russia to the Black Sea.

Officials in Moscow have said that trade with Turkey will be fully restored by the end of the year.

The UN welcomes “any international effort” to combat Islamic State, Farhan Haq, deputy spokesman for UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, said during a briefing, commenting on Turkey’s proposal to cooperate with Russia in the fight against terrorism, RIA Novosti reported.

Russia, which began airstrikes against IS in September 2015, continues to target the terrorist group's locations in Syria. Earlier on Wednesday, Tu-22M3 strategic bombers destroyed an IS chemical weapons factory, killing a number of personnel around the terrorist group's stronghold of Raqqa.

Earlier on Wednesday, Tu-22M3 strategic bombers destroyed an IS chemical weapons factory, killing a number of personnel around the terrorist group's stronghold of Raqqa.

is a trap.. the whole Erdogan visit to Russia calling for "Reset of relations". I dont think Russia will fall for it. Erdogan called for the removal of Assad again and still continues today to aid terrorist
in Syria with weapons to kill not only Syrian army forces but also Russian ones. I feel Sorry for
all Turkey citizens , with ERdogan the dictator in power , the future of Turkey will be very dark.
with a Government who is running Turkey like a dictatorship ,including controlling army and judges ,and no immunity for anyone other than ERdogan . Erdogan will hold power forever there and is seeking now Russia help not only in restoring their economy but also is restoring Erdogan image and reversing their claims that Erdogan supports ISIS.

My prediction is Erdogan will end assassinated by Europeans intelligence agencies and or Americans too. Or by his own people . Regardless of all this rallies of 1 million, there is another 80 millions left , that will not be so friendly. Erdogan support is the lowest ever since he came to power. Europe will never give Erdogan the visa he wants and Russia will never open Russia completely to a man , Russian Government don't trust. If Putin do any business with Turkey..
it will be most likely the pipeline , the only one that makes sense. and only because Americans strongly oppose it.
