Russia Deploys Electronic Warfare System as Syrian Army Prepares for Major Offensive

We've already reported on major gains made by the Syrian Army — with help from Russian airstrikes — over the last week. Now it seems that the "moderate" rebels might have more in store for them: Syrian forces are preparing a major assault to capture Aleppo. The details:

Once Syria's commercial hub, Aleppo city is now divided between government control in the west and rebel control in the east. The broader province is split as well, with ISIS largely in the east, and rebel groups and Syria's Al-Qaeda affiliate, the Nusra Front, in the west.

But with backing from Russian airstrikes and foreign fighters, Syria's armed forces are slowly advancing south and southeast of the city. "This will be the biggest military operation in Syria since the beginning of the war," one commander with pro-government forces told AFP.

There are new units being formed in Syria that are helping the SAA and Assad, do we know what kind of support is Russia helping them with? In the video we see the one with eagle and two stars.

Russian Jets Hit Some 600 Terrorist Targets in Syria in Past Four Days

Russian combat jets have hit some 600 terrorist targets in Syria over past 4 days, the Russian Defense Minsitry said.

    http://sputniknews.com/middleeast/20160119/1033369131/russia-syria-600-targets.html

"Over the past four days Russian aviation has conducted 157 combat missions hitting 579 terrorist targets in the Syrian provinces of Aleppo, Deir ez-Zor, Homs, Hama, Raqqa and Latakia," the Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told reporters.

More than 40 tons of humanitarian aid have been delivered to the Syrian areas blocked by terrorists, including Deir ez-Zor, Konashnkov added.

"The command of the Russian air group in Syria continues to deliver food and first aid to the Syrian territories blocked by the terrorists. Yesterday, we delivered over 40 tons of the humanitarian aid to residents of Deir ez-Zor and other besieged areas," the spokesman added.

Russian Su-34 strike aircraft bombed several Daesh targets in the Syrian province of Latakia, wiping out 20 enemy militants and 4 pickup trucks with mounted machine guns, Russia’s Defense Ministry representative Major General Igor Konashenkov told media Tuesday.

According to Konashenkov, the airstrikes were launched against Daesh forces holding strategic elevated positions in the province.

The Russian air forces have destroyed oil pumping station and column of the oil tanker trucks in the Syrian provinces of the Raqqa and Aleppo, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov told journalists.

Moreover, using the aerial reconaissance we spotted a column of oil tanker trucks carrying smuggled oil near the suburbs of Herbol, Aleppo province. The trucks were headed to the Turkish border, Konashenkov stressed. The Russian Su-24 jet destroyed the column of 24 oil trucks during the combat mission, the spokesman underscored.

As acts of provocations, terrorists have increased attacks on civilians in order to blame the Syrian Army for the shelling later, Igor Konashenkov noted.

"Seeing that they have no chance of halting the government troops' advance, terrorists have resorted to provoking the army forces by attacking civilians with artillery and mortar strikes and then trying to pin the blame on the Syrian Army," the spokesman said.

According to Konashenkov, Ahrar ash-Sham terrorist group and al-Nusra Front have launched rocket and artillery strikes on the Foua and Kefraya towns of the Idlib province.

A Russian military aircraft obliterated terrorist strongpoints in the Syrian province of Deir ez-Zor where Daesh militants earlier carried out a mass execution of civilians, Russia’s Defense Ministry representative Major General Igor Konashenkov told media Tuesday.

“A Russian Su-34 strike aircraft bombed terrorist strongpoints in the vicinity of the village of Bgelia in Deir ez-Zor province, where earlier Daesh militants attempted to terrorize local populace by carrying out a mass execution of about 300 civilians,” Konashenkov said.

He also added that three cargo trucks loaded with munitions, two off-road vehicles with mounted ZU-23 twin-barreled autocannons were destroyed and about 60 terrorists were killed during the airstrike.

Russian military aircraft wiped out a militant’s munitions depot and several truck convoys in the Syrian provinces of Hama and Aleppo, Russia’s Defense Ministry representative Major General Igor Konashenkov told media Tuesday.

“A Su-25 strike aircraft destroyed a militant’s munitions depot in the vicinity of Tell Rifaat in Aleppo province. Surveillance units confirmed the detonation of the ordnance stored within the facility and the building’s complete obliteration,” he said.

Also, aerial reconnaissance detected six militants’ truck convoys heading from the Turkish border towards the city of Aleppo. An airstrike conducted against these assets by a Su-34 warplane resulted in the destruction of over 20 off-road vehicles carrying weapons and personnel.

“Five enemy jeeps with mounted heavy machineguns and mortars were destroyed by Su-25 strike aircraft in the Syrian province of Hama,” Konashenkov added.

Russian Su-25 jet also destroyed a field camp of the Daesh terrorist group in the Syrian province of Homs using data provided by the patriotic opposition. Konashenkov noted.

Since September 30, Russia has been conducting a separate aerial campaign in Syria against Daesh following a request from Syrian President Bashar Assad.

But is the tank in the first part of the video the same one that is hit in the second? Clearly a different camera and the topography is different.

It's the same desert topography. The picture quality is better, different brightness and contrast and that's it. I'm talking about the FLIR image on 0:15 and the aftermath on 0:19.

A couple of interesting articles. The first by a USAF Lt Col on his view of the RuAF expeditionary force in Syria. This extract is not typical of the article but may make some of you smile/spit your dummy out

According to a USA Today article citing U.S. Defense Department and Air Force officials, almost one-third of Russia's aircraft in Syria were grounded at any given time within weeks of commencing operations, whether due to local climate (which differs greatly from Russia's) or the lack of readily available parts. In comparison, USAF combat aircraft readiness rates hover above 80 percent on average.

    http://www.washingtoninstitute.org/policy-analysis/view/the-costs-of-russias-air-expeditionary-campaign

The second is in many ways, especially the mid term future, more interesting, it is an Israeli 1* view of the impact on Hezbollah of working alongside the Russians. Well worth the read. Credit to Surenas for the heads up.

Indeed, like in the Soviet days, convoys are number one target.

That attack was not directed against the Russian Embassy. It was directed against a bus from an afghan TV company.
