November 13. / TASS /. The first two UR-100N UTTX intercontinental ballistic missiles equipped with the Avangard nuclear planning block will be put on pilot combat duty in the coming weeks. Currently, work is underway on the preparation and loading of missiles into the mines, a source in the military-industrial complex told TASS on Wednesday.

"In late November and early December, two UR-100N UTTX missiles from the first regiment of the Avangard complexes, which are equipped with hypersonic gliding wing units of the first regiment of the Avangard complexes, will take up pilot combat duty in the Dombarovskaya division of the Strategic Missile Forces,” the agency’s interlocutor said.

The source said that currently in the positional area "work is underway on the preparation of both missiles and their loading into the mines, the functioning of the regiment's protected command post and other activities are being tested."

The Strategic Missile Forces did not comment on the information provided by the source by telephone. TASS sent a request to the press service of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.

The first ten they put in to service will be the most critical... they will be the weapons aimed at fixed US ABM assets in europe and the us, so when they defeat the ABM defences all other missiles will have no trouble penetrating to their targets unhindered...

What matters for Avangard is that it has two options for rocket carrier: UR-100N and Sarmat

Just one note on the missile that will be used in the Avangard system. There have been speculations that it will be the new Sarmat, but apparently that's not the case - the boost-glide vehicle was associated with UR-100NUTTH/SS-19 from the very beginning of the program in the 1980s, it used the missile during the tests, and will stay with it until the end. Russia got about 30 "dry" UR-100NUTTH missiles that it received from Ukraine - since these missiles have never been fueled they have a few decades of combat service in them.

BTW, contract is for a total of 60 Avangards. So do the math. Minus all the tests used too.

The UR-100´s are used first because they are there and ready. Because of the capability of Sarmat to fly over the south pole to deliver it´s warheads it doesn´t need a hypersonic glider urgently. In the years after it´s first deployment some Sarmat´s will receive Avangard.

Podvig sings the sweet music to his NATO master's ears. All of his "analysis" is tendentious anti-Russia pap. Since he has some IQ
he makes it sound credible, but it is really the usual wishful thinking projection with loads of "sky is falling" rubbish.

It was quoted by Basurin I believe.  It was even Pavel Podvig who quoted it as 60 in its lifetime.  He just cant stay consistent.

They haven't revealed anything, I doubt the US side actually saw the actual warhead. Remember that time US inspectors tried to see the warhead on a Yars launcher vehicle, but the Russian side refused to lift the tarp? Besides the START Treaty is going to die in 2020-21 (with no hope in renewal), there's no point in trying to reveal anything of substance now.
