Yak-38 - it's VTOL engines were so fuel consuming that the pilot had some 20 min of flight time after take-off. In a quest to reduce weight, armament was reduced to 1x 23 mm cannon + 4 hardpoints. The plane also had no radar.
TU-144 is another tough failure - an airliner, withdrawn from service after some 100 flights.

Would agree with the Yak-38 and the Yak-38M was even worse... its more powerful engines just burned fuel faster and shortened range but did not improve speed very much at all.
I totally disagree with the Tu-144... it merely lacked the right engines.
With NK-32s it could have flown on full dry thrust which would have given it excellent performance... but there was simply no real need for supersonic air liners nor supersonic transport planes.
No one is going to spend 10 times more just to arrive an hour earlier.
