Only training is pre-flight, basically what to do if something goes wrong. You will be flying in trainers so you can take the stick and if you mess up, the instructor can take over. I just checked the price list and a base Su-27 flight is only $16.5K for me. You can fly a MiG-29 for $12.5, or L-39 for $3.6. If you get the package price goes up b/c you will be getting accomodations included. I am just going to fly. Zhukovsky Airbase isn't 15km from my sister's flat.

Blackseafor warships call at Ukraine's Sevastopol port
    RIA Novosti

    14/08/200914:55

MOSCOW, August 14 (RIA Novosti) - Five warships from the Black Sea Naval Cooperation Task Group (Blackseafor) called on Friday at the port of Sevastopol, Ukraine, on a four-day goodwill visit.

Formally established on Turkey's initiative in 2001, Blackseafor - which comprises Turkey, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania, Georgia and Russia - conducts search and rescue operations and environmental monitoring, and organizes goodwill visits among Black Sea countries.

Its charter says Blackseafor can also be deployed for peacekeeping operations under a UN or OSCE mandate.

This year's drills will be conducted under the command of the Bulgarian Navy.

A spokesman for Russia's Black Sea Fleet has said the Blackseafor warships will practice, in particular, monitoring of commercial shipping, interception and pursuit of suspicious vessels, communications and tactical maneuvering.

Georgian warships have not participated in the Blackseafor exercises for a number of years, and will not take part in the upcoming drills.

Russia has said it will not take part in any joint naval exercises involving Georgian warships.

Diplomatic ties were cut between Russia and Georgia after last August's war over South Ossetia, which began when Georgian forces attacked the province in an attempt to bring it back under central control.

What do you think about Y.Timoshenko ? I have seen that she is the one that Kremlin supports, judging by the gas deal she got for Ukraine... Is she the best candidate to be supported and the one to be trusted?

Yulia likes to ride the fence between East and West. She thinks the US and Europe should "contain" Russia while avoid sparking a new Cold War. She wants them to bypass Russia as the source of gaz. As the gaz queen herself, she cannot be trusted in this sphere but she does not want to join NATO. She is better than Yushenko.

    On a sidenote...

"Acting Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Ivashchenko said that the state of good repair of aviation equipment - bases combat capability of the Armed Forces of Ukraine - is assessed as "critical" and has a strong tendency towards a subsequent decline."

Ukraine is getting weaker by the day... a few more years of modernisation of Russian forces should have us prepared for an invasion to take out this rouge regime.

US Warship Calls at Ukrainian Port Amid Protests

A U.S. guided missile cruiser stopped at the Ukrainian Black Sea port of Sevastopol on Thursday with a group of some 50 protesters chanting “Yankee, go home!” and “No to NATO!”

The USS Vella Gulf (CG 72), a Ticonderoga class guided missile cruiser, is on a mission in the Black Sea and is to visit the ports of Constanta, Sevastopol and Odessa.

It carries 26 Tomahawk cruise missiles with a range of up to 3,000 kilometers and has elements of a missile defense system on board.

The protesters also burned a U.S. flag featuring Nazi swastika instead of stars.

Yevhen Dubovik, a protest organizer, said the visit was illegal because it had not been authorized by Ukraine’s parliament.

“Nevertheless, a warship has called here that has offensive weapons on board and it is not ruled out that if it receives orders it will deliver a strike on Iran in close proximity to our coast,” he said.

“Thus Ukraine, a state not affiliated with any military blocs, may automatically become involved in an international conflict.”

The USS Vella Gulf is to remain in Sevastopol until January 31. A number of joint tactical exercises with Ukrainian naval units have been planned.

Kiev wants to invite NATO experts to train Ukrainians mobilized into army

“We are taking an active part in negotiations to attract NATO experts from the United States,” Yuriy Chizhmar in charge of military work at the Society of Assistance to the Defense of Ukraine said

KIEV, January 19 /TASS/. Ukraine wants to invite American NATO experts to teach an art of war to mobilized Ukrainians, Yuriy Chizhmar who is in charge of military and patriotic work at the Society of Assistance to the Defense of Ukraine told a news conference in Kiev on Monday.

“We are taking an active part in negotiations to attract NATO experts from the United States,” he said.

At the same time, NATO has already launched some military training programs in Ukraine. “We are training about 100 people at our weekly course of intensive NATO training. They acquire military professions of a machine gunner, a submachine-gunner, and so on,” Chizhmar said.

A Ukrainian delegation will take part in meetings of the NATO military committee on January 20-22. The sides will also discuss prospects of military cooperation in the Ukraine-NATO format.

The fourth round of mobilization is kicking off in Ukraine on January 20 following a decree signed by Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko. The next round of mobilization will be held in April and June. Additional 50,000 people are going to be mobilized.

The Society of Assistance to the Defense of Ukraine is a socio-patriotic and sport association of citizens. Over years of Ukraine’s independence, its educational establishments have trained about 500,000 experts in various military professions for the need of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and other military units.

What a double standard... the west alleges that Russia is interfering in the conflict in the Ukraine and imposes sanctions against Russia because of that.

Here the US is clearly openly training and likely equipping one side in the conflict... WTF... why is the US allowed to interfere and Russia is not?

US Training for Ukrainian Military Underway

A former top US Pentagon official said at an Atlantic Council conference that US training for the Ukrainian military is underway and being directed from NATO and the US Embassy in Kiev.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — US training for the Ukrainian military is underway and being directed from NATO and the US Embassy in Kiev, former top US Pentagon official Jan Lodal said at an Atlantic Council conference.

“There is quite a bit of American effort underway, some of it from NATO and some of it from the embassy in Ukraine,” Lodal said Monday of US military training being given to Ukrainian officers. For US specialists to provide the additional training being considered, Lodal commented, “Americans would have to be in Ukraine to do this additional training.”

Lodal, who served as the Principal Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, and was also a senior staff member of the National Security Council, is part of a team of former US officials who drafted a report calling on the US government to provide lethal and non-lethal military aid to Ukraine.

Former US ambassador to Ukraine Steven Pifer verified Lodal’s statements at the Atlantic Council saying that US personnel are already “training four battalions of Ukrainian National Guard.” Pifer, who is also an author of the report, stated that the training is taking place in Ukraine’s far west, near the border with Poland “well away from the conflict zone.”

Former Pentagon official, Lodal further commented that the United States already has “an infrastructure there,” which should be able to handle the “additional” and “stepped up” military training, which is being recommended in the report released by the former US officials. According to the experts’ report, the training would mostly deal with operating new defensive weapons system and improving command and control.

Asked whether additional US training would take place in Ukraine or if officers would be brought to the United States, Lodal acknowledged he was uncertain “whether it would be possible to bring some Ukrainian officers or officials to the United States.”

Since last year, the United States has provided Ukraine with radar systems and has put military advisors and special forces on the ground in Ukraine, according to statement this past summer by US European Command.

The White House announced Monday it is still assessing its policies regarding providing lethal and other military assistance to the government in Ukraine.

Ukrainians seem to have capable ATGMs and just look at the terrain. Javelin would be useless. TOW2 would be something better for them.

Well I don't think that if the US sends in troops... even just for training, that Russia should do the same, but I think that Russia should start supplying the rebels with explosives and training... and some long range sniper rifles might be useful too.

The huge irony is that the Ukraine probably has plenty of weapons and ammo and they will suffer most if both sides get weapon supplies from an outside power...

Maybe Russia should cultivate some terrorist activity in the west like the Ukrainians were threatening to do in Russia... it is not getting much credit for keeping its nose out. Take precautions to ensure only nazis are killed... it might shorten the war and bring the remaining nazis to the table with a genuine interest in ending the conflict. As it is the nazis will likely only retain power while it is marshal law so really they wont have many other reasons for a peaceful settlement.

Perhaps a unilaterally imposed no fly zone over most of the Ukraine? Razz
