With reconstruction and modernization of Zaliv shipyard in Crimea, RuNAVY could build Priboy ships for Black Sea Fleet in Zaliv shipyard. Smaller Priboys will serve well in Baltic and Black Sea fleets, while larger Lavina will be better for ocean going Northern and Pacific fleets. For Pacific fleets I am sure new Lavinas and aircraft carriers will be build in new large Zvezda Shipyard in Vladivostok, but I'm not sure which shipyard will produce them for Northern fleet.

Anyway, two Priboy ships bring same capacities as one Mistral in both, with number of helicopters and in troops and equipment capacities, so they are well suitable for the fleet like in the Black Sea. Building four of them for Black Sea fleet would also bring strong Russian presence in Mediterranean Sea and with similar number in the Baltic, they will have enough of them for constant rotations. The best support for them are Buyan-M corvettes, which are actually now a new class of land attack cruise missiles corvettes, which could be armed with conventional or with nuclear warheads. For anti-ship operations, they will have other corvettes.

So at this point we do not know when will start production of those new ships

Well my guess would be that Priboy should start right after 2nd Ivan Gren is floated out of the dock. That shipyard was already building landing ships so it would make sense to just continue at the same place.

And like medo said, it would be smart move to build them at more than one shipyard.

they are only building what two of those now? are these things even worth it really or should they have just saved the money for the Amp Assault ships they want to build.

Different sized vessels with more range and ocean going ability is what was required... I am sure they will find uses for these two vessels, but the navy wanted something more... AFAIK.

True story.... They are too small and cannot carry as much troops and hardware as Ropucha.

They are old project but when Mistrals were ordered they were restarted and expected to act as supplements to Mistrals and 6 were planned. But when that fell trough Navy ditched remaining ships and opted to start new projects from scratch. These two were too far into production to be canceled so they opted to finish them.
They will probably go to Black Sea fleet. Low treat environment and short distances.

Rubbish. Max load is 13 MBTs and 300 troops, while Ropucha is 10 MBTs and 340 troops. The Grens have a helicopter as well.

Not great ships, but will still enhance the naval amphibious landing capabilities. Certainly better than nothing...

Any ship that's available now is an asset. Thats the situation Russian Navy is in now, courtesy the colossal failure in planning and setting priorities. On top of that we had a multi-billion dollar Mistral courtesy some morons.

Its provides higher capacity that the existing ones and thats the good point. The negative being, the second one is faaaaaaaaar away.

The internals of the Ivan gren.

Compared to the Ropuchas, this ship has a wider cargo hold and has wider doors etc.

    This.

I honestly don't understand why so many navies have such a huge hardon for amphibious ships these days, particularly the huge chopper carrier types dunno
But at least Ivan Gren will likely be put to good use on the Syria Express, maybe allowing a couple of the older ships like Alligators to be retired.
