Russia agreeing integrated air defense deals with Central Asian states, Armenia
The CIS integrated air defense system of forces and capabilities currently comprises 19 aviation units, 38 anti-aircraft missile formations, 15 radio-technical units, nine air defense brigades and three electronic warfare units
ASTRAKHAN, August 31. /TASS/. An agreement on creating an integrated Russia-Tajikistan regional air defense system is undergoing its ratification and similar deals are being discussed with Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Armenia, Deputy Chairman of the Air Defense Coordination Committee under the CIS Defense Ministers’ Council Colonel-General Yuri Grekhov said on Tuesday.
"The agreement on creating the integrated regional air defense system of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan signed on April 27, 2021, is undergoing the procedure of its ratification," the general said after a meeting of the Air Defense Coordination Committee.
Currently, a draft agreement on creating a Russia-Kyrgyzstan integrated regional air defense system "is undergoing the procedure of inter-state approval," he added. Following the completion of this work, the draft deal will be submitted to the defense ministers of both countries for signing, the general said.
Also, work is underway "for the practical implementation of the agreements between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Kazakhstan," he said.

State Duma ratified agreement with Tajikistan on a joint air defense system
The system is created in order to improve the efficiency of solving the problems of air defense in the region.
MOSCOW, December 16. / TASS /. The State Duma on Thursday ratified an agreement between Russia and Tajikistan to create a joint air defense system.
According to the document, the parties are creating a unified regional air defense system, which is an integral part of the unified air defense system of the CIS member states. This is done in order to increase the efficiency of solving the problems of air defense in the region.
Taking into account the disunity of the territories of the two countries, the parties to the agreement will allocate within the region a separate area of collective security within the territory and airspace of Tajikistan. The list of military command and control bodies, command posts, formations, formations and military units allocated to the united regional air defense system is approved jointly by the defense ministers of the sides, if possible, to make changes to it.
The agreement states that the coordination of joint actions of the troops of the United Regional Air Defense System and forces from other regional air defense systems in the Central Asian region of collective security is carried out by the Commander-in-Chief of the Aerospace Forces of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. The general leadership of the RF forces as part of the air defense system is entrusted to the commander of the Central Military District of the RF Armed Forces, and the control of joint actions of the forces of the united air defense system within the boundaries of a separate collective security area is entrusted to the commander of the Air Force and Air Defense of the Armed Forces of Tajikistan.
The document notes that the existing procedure for financing and providing the armed forces of the parties within the framework of the joint air defense system will not change. The agreement is concluded for a period of five years. In the future, its validity is automatically extended for subsequent five-year periods.
Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced the creation of such an air defense system in April during negotiations with the head of the Tajik military department. As Shoigu explained then, the parties prepared a draft of the relevant agreement in order to increase the reliability of the protection of the state border in the airspace.
