Re: 2023 Israel–Hamas war
Of course, The Yanks, Biden and his yes-men idiots already conveniently forgot how Afghanistan ended. With them trapped on Kabul airfield, Surrounded by the Taliban.
It was by the mercy the Taliban showed by stopping at the airfield borders, and letting NATO aircraft land and take-off unmolested.
They could have done so, but chose not to.
They have a very selective memory don't they... they went into Afghanistan with Russian support because Russia thought they might actually do some good and help the people there... and they were rather nice that even when they withdrew the use of their territory to send supplies and support to Afghanistan they didn't do what the US always does to them and start supporting the other side with weapons.
It would just take a few Iglas and a few of the heavier RPG rockets to make armour and helicopter airpower too costly to use in Afghanistan and it really isn't the sort of place where you can just walk from location to location.
It is not in Russian interests to shower the region in MANPADS and ATGMs, but considering they are still losing men because of western support for Ukraine they might just make an exception in a few very special cases.
Didn't think payback could be so swift, but who knows... the US led west is unpopular and when the people they bully see a chance they have little to lose in having a go.

Google is disabling live traffic conditions in Israel and the Gaza Strip for its Maps and Waze apps at the request of the Israeli military, ahead of a potential ground invasion into Gaza.

@ArmchairW
Some analysis on the prospects of an Israeli ground assault and occupation of Gaza, which perhaps explains why they've been shying away from actually launching the operation.
Hamas right now claims 40,000 reasonably well-armed and well-trained fighters in a city of 2 million.
First rule of thumb: all else being equal, you generally need a 3:1 numerical advantage to attack successfully. While the IDF has an extremely steep advantage in firepower, the Palestinians have had over a decade to dig in, and the Israelis would be attacking into a growing rubble pile. As anyone familiar with the Battle of Monte Cassino (or the much more recent Battle of Mosul) would tell you, rubble can be just as good to fight from as intact buildings and will interfere with the effective use of armored vehicles. Thus, the IDF will need to mass some 120,000 troops to defeat Hamas et al and occupy Gaza.
Second rule of thumb: to conduct intensive counterinsurgency operations, you need a 1:20 ratio of security personnel to local inhabitants. There are some two million people living in Gaza, suggesting that an occupation army of 100,000 will be required into at least the medium term to pacify the city and root out insurgents - of which there will be many, because the local population hates the Israelis to an extent we have difficulty comprehending in the West.
The IDF's regular strength in peacetime is 165,000 troops. So it can be readily seen that this mission would require doubling the standing strength of the IDF out of reserves and keeping it there for a period of years, likely after a grueling urban battle that could easily inflict more combat casualties on the IDF than it has suffered in every war it has been involved in since independence combined. Or to put it another way, devoting 1.5% of the Jewish and Druze population of Israel to counterinsurgency duty in Gaza for an indefinite period.
No wonder Netanyahu keeps pushing off the invasion. Even if they win the battle it's a recipe for disaster.

The fact 360,000 men were mobilized gives some idea of the magnitude of the challenge posed by Hamas and Gaza. Political considerations may force nutanyahu to go in anyway. I hope it becomes a fiasco; imagine the prestige Hamas would have if it beat back the mighty IDF. If Hamas members become heroes--a legend in the arab world--that, together with the slaughter of Palestinian civilians, may auger a vastly altered political landscape throughout the region.

Re: 2023 Israel–Hamas war
Hamas are in tunnels , probably with supplies to last months . As a guess , so far they released 2~4 hostages , or two per week . So we have another 100 weeks to go ! Also they have not run out of Rockets yet ! Did anyone count , how many they fired ? And why they did not fire heavier Rockets , that they surely can manufacture ? How many Iron - Sieve SAM have been fired by Israel ? What is their production rate ? What happens when they run out ? How heavy a missile will land ? From where ? The civilians may stay or leave , but Gaza is in reality a frontline with extensive bunker system . Israelis say " the bombing will last for three months . " They can not imagine that the Gaza fighting may last two years . The same with Hezbollah . Remember some Hamas said " ...we want a two state solution ! " Someone who is ill prepared , does not make such grandiose statements .

This type of psychological -escalation sequence seems suited against a superior opponent

Re: 2023 Israel–Hamas war
Israel’s desire for its citizens not to be hit by enemy missile attacks is understandable. Yet this aversion to losses — more pronounced than their adversaries’ — seems impossible to maintain in the face of the current threat. At some point Israel will run low on air defence, at which point it will be vulnerable to missile attacks in a well-stocked region.
The American announcement to deliver Patriots and THAADs signals that Western military leaders understand this reality. But it is not clear that those outside of military circles do. If a war kicks off in Israel, it won’t be a limited war. The whole of Israeli society will be pulled in, facing a constant threat of large, sophisticated missiles overhead. Too many Western commentators seem to think that Israel can simply send troops into the Gaza Strip and crush Hamas. But once one understands the military and logistical picture, this simplistic narrative begins to break down.
