“In 2023, the Navy faces large-scale and important tasks, the priority of which is the adoption of the Imperator Alexander III ballistic missile strategic cruiser, four submarines, 12 surface ships and support vessels into the Navy,” the admiral said. I have been comparing the Borei to the ohio class and it is not much smaller.

IIRC Ohio class is not rated to operate at the depths that Russian SSBNs are usually designed for, and they certainly are not designed to operate in polar seas with ice hazard.  Russians build their boomers with double hulls for enhanced acosutic dampening and physical robustness, and they can withstand some contact with ice.  If an Ohio encounters a berg it will perform a historical re-enactment of the Titanic as the ice slices it open from head to gut.

Ohio can carry 24x heavy Tridents only because US designers placed priority in maximising the missile capacity, and they did this by sacrificing operating depth, robustness, crew spaces etc.  Borei-M (and Delta-IV IMHO) are a more balanced design and far more suited to Russian navy operational realities.

Murkans do not always know best

I understand the the Ohio class is a poorly balanced boat but it would be idiotic for the Russians to have put a submarine with no growth potential in service. If it cannot carry heavier missiles than it is initially designed for then it greatly limits what missiles it can be re equipped with down the line.

Borei were developed for Bulava. Ohio for Trident. They don't have universal BM launchers. No one has, it would be too complicated to design.

After 30 years of service they will either make a bulava 2.0 or make a new sub with a new missile.
