Record 3 million homes lose power
    By Matthew Strong
    Taiwan News, Staff Writer

TaPEI (Taiwan News) – A record 3.84 million homes were left without electricity some time during the passage of Typhoon Soudelor, the Taiwan Power Corporation said Saturday.
The amount was not only a record, but due to the size of the problem, Taipower’s website stalled as too many people went online to report problems.

The previous record of 2.79 million households without power was reached during a typhoon in 1996, reports said.

Taipower said it was doing its best to fix the problem, but continuing strong winds and torrential rain in the wake of the typhoon was making repair work slow and difficult.

By 1 p.m. Saturday, 1.91 million homes were still left without power, but the number was brought down to 1.41 million by early evening, Taipower said. Central Taiwan’s Changhua County was the worst affected, with 400,000 homes still waiting for power to come back on. Taoyuan and New Taipei had 230,000 households each without power, Taichung 220,000, Yunlin County, where the eye of the typhoon left Taiwan’s main island, 160,000, Chiayi County 140,000 and Kaohsiung 100,000.

Taipower IT staff also had their hands full with trying to restore the company website, because too many people were looking up information about fixing the power shortage or reporting problems in their home.

Namibian beef to enter Chinese market

WINDHOEK, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- Namibian beef will soon enter the Chinese market as the two countries have signed an agreement early this month on the operational details for the trade, an official has said.

Agriculture Minister John Mutorwa this week said local cattle farmers and companies would soon have access to "the world's largest consumer market".

It makes Namibia the first African country to export bone-in beef to China.

The Southern African nation has been negotiating with China since 2011 over the beef exports.

"Namibia is really fortunate to be among the ten countries in the world that are now allowed to export beef to this lucrative market thanks to the internationally recognized veterinary control systems that are in place in Namibia," Mutorwa said.

The Chinese market, as opposed to the European Union markets, allows the import of beef on the bone.

Namibia currently exports 17,000 metric tonnes of meat products to South Africa every year, 10,000 metric tonnes to the European Union.

‘McDonald’s goddess’ cashier takes Taiwan by storm
    By Beth Spotswood on August 20, 2015 10:54 AM [08.20.2015 12:46:55]

    More Here: http://blog.sfgate.com/hottopics/2015/08/20/mcdonalds-goddess-cashier-takes-taiwan-by-storm/

A young cashier in Taiwan is known as the “McDonald’s Goddess” after photos of her at work went viral. The blog RainDog featured several photos of Wei Han Xu, also known as Wei Wei, the aforementioned McDonald’s Goddess, and the “cutest McDonald’s goddess in Taiwanese history.”

Fans are packing a Taipei City McDonald’s for pictures with Xu, and little intention of actually ordering food. Xu has become so famous that it’s starting to annoy her fast food manager, who some might argue should have seen this coming. According to the Daily Mail, Taiwanese McDonald’s have purposely hired attractive women and encouraged them to dress as maids, cheerleaders and sailors.

Xu, a college student and part-time model, recently thanked all of her fans on her Facebook page, saying, “In these few days, I received a lot of message from people that had different backgrounds. I was shocked because in my point of view it is just an old news In Taiwan. I would like to say thank you to all the attentions, thank you so much to concern about me.”

Taiwanese astronomer, physicist win top awards

    More Here: http://www.taipeitimes.com/News/taiwan/archives/2015/09/03/2003626846

Taiwanese astronomer Yung Yuk-ling (翁玉林) and physicist Chen Sow-hsin (陳守信) have won top honors for outstanding contributions to the fields of planetary science and nuclear science, Academia Sinica said on Tuesday.

Yung has won the Gerard P. Kuiper Prize, one of the top prizes in the field of planetary science, the American Astronomical Society’s (AAS) Division for Planetary Sciences announced last month.

He, along with recipients of four other planetary science prizes, are to be honored at an awards ceremony in Maryland in November.
Yung, the first Taiwanese to win the award, is “a founding father of planetary atmospheric chemistry and one of the most influential researchers in the field,” the AAS said in a statement.

“His unique integration of observations, laboratory data, and careful modeling has yielded pioneering insights into the current properties and behavior of solar-system atmospheres, as well as their historical evolution,” it said.

“His models of the chemistry of planetary atmospheres have been widely used to interpret the results from spacecraft missions, including the Vikings, Voyagers, Pioneer Venus, Galileo, Venus Express, Mars Science Laboratory, Cassini and New Horizons,” it said.

Named after one of the founding fathers of contemporary planetary sciences, Gerard Kuiper, the prize seeks to honor scientists whose achievements have most advanced the understanding of the solar system and its members.

Yung, who is a Smits Family professor at the California Institute of Technology, is renowned for his contributions in the areas of atmospheric photochemistry and aeronomy, global climate change, radiative transfer, atmospheric evolution, and mesospheric-thermospheric chemistry and exchange, Academia Sinica said.

Yang was also a recipient of the NASA Exceptional Scientific Achievement Medal in 2004, it said.

Chen is the winner of this year’s Guinier Prize for his achievement in the field of small-angle scattering, the International Union of Crystallography announced last month.

Chen, an emeritus professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering, is to receive his prize and present a plenary lecture on Sept. 17 at the 16th International Conference on Small-Angle Scattering in Berlin.

Small-angle scattering is a technique used in the field of non-crystalline materials, such as colloids and macromolecules, to investigate the nanostructures and inter-particle correlation in liquids and solids, including their size, shape and internal structure.

The Guinier Prize was established in honor of the father of small-angle scattering, French physicist Andre Guinier, and the prize is given for lifetime achievement, a major breakthrough or an outstanding contribution to the field.

Chen has won recognition for his development of new methods for data analysis, together with pioneering experiments on the structure and mutual interactions of self-assembled systems such as micelles, microemulsions and protein-surfactant complexes in solution.

Chen also won the Clifford G. Shull Prize presented by the Neutron Scattering Society of America in 2008, Academia Sinica said.

Men in Dongguan, China, ‘have three girlfriends’ because there’s so many women
    SEPTEMBER 03, 2015 11:00AM [09.05.2015 14:20:42]

    More Here: http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/relationships/men-in-dongguan-china-have-three-girlfriends-because-theres-so-many-women/story-fnet09p2-1227510816289

CHINA’s one child policy may have created a massive gender imbalance with millions more men than women in the country, but one city is bucking the trend with so many women living there that most men have two or three girlfriends.

The bizarre twist in the Chinese shortage of women story centres around the populous city of Dongguan, in south China’s Guangdong Province, known for producing popular electronics such as iPhones and iPads.

But local manufacturers running assembly plants prefer not to use men as they find them unreliable and instead offer work mainly to women.
It’s meant the city has far more women than men, and the men who are there tend to have only odd jobs and casual work, leaving them with plenty of time on their hands.

And that means time for more than one girlfriend, with some admitting they have two or three permanent girlfriends at the same time.
One man told local TV: “It is a lot easier here to find a girlfriend than a job.”

The disproportionate number of women has recently led to Dongguan being branded the capital of sex with many women still willingly and knowingly involving themselves in relationships with men who already have other partners.

Li Bin, a migrant factory worker from south-western Sichuan Province, said: “I have three girlfriends, and all of them know about each other. Many of my friends also have many girlfriends.”

He added: “There are so many young and naive female workers in the city.

Why not have more than one if we can? Look, everyone is here to have fun; if you don’t do it, others will.”

Japan Restarts Second Reactor at Sendai Nuclear Power Plant

According to operator, the second power unit at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant, the only nuclear power plant working in Japan after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, was restarted on Thursday morning.

TOKYO (Sputnik) – The second power unit at the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant, the only nuclear power plant working in Japan after the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster, was restarted on Thursday morning, the operator said.

"We see this startup as one of the important steps on restart process of the nuclear reactor," Kyushu Electric Power Co said in a Thursday release, stressing that safety remains its top priority in the operation of both the first and the second Sendai nuclear reactors.

The first Sendai reactor was restarted in August and returned to commercial operation last week. The second Sendai reactor will start power generation later this month and is expected to enter commercial operations in mid-November.

"We have resolved never to allow an accident such as that which occurred at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. To be worthy of peace of mind of all our stakeholder, we will promote initiatives for improving the safety and security of nuclear power with voluntary and ongoing measures," Kyushu Electric Power Co said in its Thursday statement.

Currently, 20 reactors at 13 Japanese nuclear power plants are undergoing audits to confirm that their safety standards are in compliance with the new regulations, adopted after the Fukushima meltdown.

The Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster, which occurred on March 11, 2011, was triggered by a 9.0-magnitude earthquake and a subsequent tsunami. Before the disaster, nuclear reactors provided almost 30 percent of Japan's power needs.

After Fukushima, all nuclear power plants in Japan were either closed or their operations were suspended.

The Sendai Nuclear Power Plant is currently the only nuclear power plant operating in Japan.

Singapore shipbuilder ST Marine has laid down the third of eight Independence-class Littoral Mission Vessels (LMVs) on order for the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN), a company representative told IHS Jane's on 25 January.

A keel-laying ceremony for the 1,200-tonne vessel on 26 November 2015 at ST Marine's shipyard in Jurong was attended by the country's chief of defence force, Major General Perry Lim, and navy chief Rear Admiral Lai Chung Han.

ST Marine is building all eight vessels under a contract announced in January 2013 to replace the RSN's 11 Fearless-class patrol vessels that have been in service since the mid-1990s. The platform has been jointly designed by Saab Kockums AB and ST Marine.

The LMV has a length of 80 m, a beam of 12 m, and a draught of 3 m. Powered by two MTU 20V 4000 M93 engines, the 1,250-tonne platform has a top speed in excess of 27 kt and a standard range of 3,500 n miles at 15 kt. The platform can accommodate a baseline crew complement of 23 including five officers and has a mission endurance of 14 days.

The Independence-class ships will each be armed with one Oto Melara 76/62 Super Rapid main gun as a primary weapon, two Oto Melara Hitrole 12.7 mm remote-controlled weapon stations (one each on the port and starboard sides), and one stern-facing Rafael 25 mm Typhoon stabilised naval gun system. The vessels will also be equipped with a 12-cell vertical launching system (VLS) in the forward section that can deploy MBDA's VL Mica anti-air missile system.

The platform can embark one medium-lift helicopter on its flight deck and two rigid hull inflatable boats (RHIBs) or the Protector unmanned surface vessel (USV) at its stern.

Orange Pi One is a tiny quad-core PC for $10

    Here: http://liliputing.com/2016/01/orange-pi-one-is-a-tiny-quad-core-pc-for-10-plus-4-shipping.html

When the original Raspberry Pi launched in 2012 it seemed crazy that a fully-functional computer could be priced at just $35… even if it had a relatively slow processor and other anemic specs.

These days there’s no shortage of dirt cheap single-board computers. The Raspberry Pi team even sells a new $5 version. But if you’ve got a few more dollars to spend, the new $10 Orange Pi One looks like an interesting alternative.

For twice the price of a Raspberry Pi Zero, the Orange Pi One features a faster processor, additional ports, and an Ethernet jack.

It’s available for order one from AliExpress. Note that shipping to the US brings the total price to $14… which is still not a lot of money for a computer.

The Orange Pi One features an Allwinner H3 1.2 GHz quad-core ARM Cortex-A7 processor, ARM Mali-400MP2 graphics, 512MB of RAM, and a microSD card slot for storage.

It has HDMI output, 10/100 Ethernet support, a USB 2.0 port, a micro USB port, a 40-pin Raspberry Pi-compatible header, a camera interface, and a few GPIO pins.

Like other Orange Pi computers, the new $10 model should be able to run Android or a variety of Linux-based operating systems including Raspbian, Ubuntu, and Debian.

Orient is Tired of the Western "BegPackers"

Locals have called western backpackers: "begpackers," and government officials in several countries have had enough with these pesky white youngsters asking for money from people who are significantly poorer than they're. wrote:

I have not traveled much because I cannot afford to. I think these guys heard too many of these "you can travel the world almost without any money" stories that have been rather popular during the last decade or two.

My suspicion is that many of these stories are either invented or exaggerated by people who are perhaps not very eager to admit that they are rich, but who somehow despite their "poverty" managed to visit many countries.

I am curious if these "begpackers" are also found elsewhere, like in Europe and Latin America?

Lots of tourists here in NZ often hire a vehicle and live in the vehicle rather than using hotels or other lodgings that would cost rather more. Freedom campers they call it, which is basically living on the cheap and not spending money in the places you visit...

New Zealand is so far away from all countries except perhaps Australia, that it is prohibitive for genuinely poor people to visit this country simply on the basis of the high cost of the plane tickets.

Really poor people from Poland cannot even get to New Zealand in the first place; the plane tickets simply cost too much.

And renting a car also costs money. Even staying at camping sites costs money.
