When I was in the Army, apart from the 10 minute mass weekly shower (during which the water frequently went from boiling hot to cold) we didn't have hot water all winter. We had to wash with cold water and sometimes in the field with snow.

    Some interesting news..

UVZ has begun supplying the Army with what they call T-72B3 tanks. There's no official info on the technical details, but the talk on the Ru-net is that it has relict armour on the glacis but K-5 armour on the turret

    Possible appearance of the T-72B3

Well here is first word about T-72B3 tanks

Any relevant information beyond an estimated guess as to how the T-72B3 would compare to T-90A?

    We don't know specs.

If it is the same as previous T-72 modernizations, then signficantly worse than T-90A.

No Relikt, ERA placement is so so, no new engine, etc.

I rather suspect the upgrade will focus on new thermals and new communications and battle management computers to allow better coordination of vehicles and offer night and all weather capability too.

There is no point in spending too much at the moment on what are really just stop gap solutions.

I would hope that new engines and new ERA would be included as operational experience is good for such systems and spending such money means the developers get operational experience with their products and also earn money for further upgrades and improvements based on feedback from the actual users.

Often the best upgrades don't improve performance, they just make it easier to use and cheaper to maintain in service.

Well Sosna (good fire control + thermals is on all the modernized T-72 (2011, 2012, etc etc).

The issue is there doesn't seem to be anything else new, despite Serdykov (and half the state officials) blabbing on how the upgrade brings it up to T-90 effectiveness at a margin of the cost.
Also, the previous T-72s (also with Sosna) cost something like 38 million rubles per tank, while the latest ones are 52 million.....hell of an inflation wouldn't you say Wink .

If the price difference is as much as you say, then I suspect it has some new stuff added on compared to 2011 model....I guess we'll find out soon enough if they've already entered service.

    Ridiculous.

Maybe has something to do with the T-72 upgrade not actually being anywhere close to T-90A level.

Any details on the T-72 upgrade yet, i haven't heard much other than it being called the T-72B3. scratch

Rumored to be closer to Rogatka due to the increased price.
Serdukov and others kept saying it would be as good if not better than T-90.

However now there is suspicion that in that video we saw the new T-72s, and the upgrade isn't that thorough.
No new engine, no Relikt, for example.

I am not sure what all the outrage is, the T-72 2011 modernization already showed us what the MOD was buying.
The question is what the T-72B3 upgrade entails, and frankly the Izvestya article is so full of holes in factual matters, I have little reason to trust their B3 analysis.
They are not above inventing "sources".

Heh, confusing question in reality Sad

There are so many variants of T-72s modernized post USSR (like BA: http://otvaga2004.ru/tanki/istoriya-sozdaniya/tank-t72ba/ ) it is hard to come across exact info on what the model 2011 entailed.
What we know: no new engine.
    Suspension possibly modernized.
K-5 fitted (not all tanks had it before)
    Sosna-U fire control fitted
    New radios
    Atmospheric and wind sensors
Rest is unclear, specifically about gun+ autoloader adjustments.

Part of problem I guess is a big portion of the upgrade cost is just to perform capital repairs on very worn out tanks.
Might just be a better idea to buy new T-90s..so that part of Izvestiyas "journalism" is believable.

Excellent photos of upgraded T-72BZ. The tank is equipped with a Sosna-U FCS, as in T-90SM. Kontakt-5 and a 2A46M-5 gun have been installed. On the downside, the V-84 engine is kept. Note vulnerable area in ERA coverage where IR projector used to be.
