Russian Navy to Order New Warships to Strengthen Positions in Global Ocean

The new vessels will have the same weapons and military equipment as a small missile ship usually has, Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov said. However, "they will be a bit different in the specifications of ocean and sea navigation," he added.

The Russian Defense Ministry will soon order the construction of two ocean-class small corvettes, Ministry Deputy Head Yury Borisov told journalists Friday.

Over recent years, the Russian Navy has increased its activities in the global ocean.

Russia will not “brandish its arms, but it restores its positions in order to curb any possible threats to its national security," according to Navy Commander Admiral Viktor Chirkov.

"Now we will study and place orders for small corvettes," Borisov said.

Admiral Chirkov, in his turn, announced that the new vessels will have the same weapons and military equipment as a small missile ship usually has. However, "they will be a bit different in the specifications of ocean and sea navigation," according to him.

He also underscored that the number of new missile carrying vessels will totally correspond to the national security requirements.

"Now we are making progress in the field of long-range missiles. They will be installed on naval ships to hit coastal and ground targets," the admiral said.

Russian Large Anti-Ship Vessel Completes Drills in Bay of Biscay

Russian large anti-ship vessel, the Severomorsk, completed a range of combat exercises, including the provision of anti-aircraft and anti-ship defense for a group of ships in the Bay of Biscay.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) – A Russian large anti-ship vessel, the Severomorsk, has completed anti-aircraft and anti-ship defense exercises in the Bay of Biscay, the Russian Defense Ministry's Northern Fleet's press service said Tuesday.

The heavy nuclear-powered GM cruiser Peter the Great of the Arctic fleet seen in the Pacific fleet vessels' sortie for combat training.

"While crossing the Bay of Biscay, the crew of the Russian large anti-ship vessel completed a range of combat exercises, including the provision of anti-aircraft and anti-ship defense for a group of ships, as well as training in rescue operations using Ka-27 [Helix] helicopters," the press service said.

On Monday, the Northern Fleet announced that the rescue divers will soon begin training to help nuclear submarine crew "in distress." Earlier this month, the pilots of the Northern Fleet's Su-33 (Flanker) carrier-based superiority fighters carried out exercises on target interception and air combat.

A large-scale snap inspection of the fleet's combat readiness was carried out last month.

According to the Russian Defense Ministry, the country intends to conduct at least 4,000 military exercises in 2015.

Good news.. extracting life of those remaining Soviet era boats, while awaiting enough number of P-885M.

Most likely that is a misquote. End of the 2020s???? No chance.

There are 3 Borei afloat (2 in active status), 3 currently building and 2 to be laid down this year. In 5 years time (eg Jan 1st 2020) , its not unreasonable to expect 8 operational.

There is 1 Yasen in service, and 4 building. Again its very conceivable that 5-6 will be operational by 2020.

Keep in mind that now that serious funds are flowing, the excruciatingly slow build rates are a thing of the past. Will they achieve 8 & 6? IMHO they stand a very good chance.

What sort of ship is this

    http://tass.ru/armiya-i-opk/1931048

On the ship, "three in one"

Look multipurpose ship "three in one" for the Russian Navy will be determined in August 2015.

"Work is underway to build a ship that will combine the quality and characteristics of the icebreaker tugs and patrol boat. In August, will be determined by the official appearance of the multi-purpose ship capable to serve in the Arctic zone," - said Chirkov.

According to him, the ship will carry artillery and other weapons.

    Interesting quote at the end.

I am sure that when the modernization of the plant will be completed at the Sevmash will be new technical capabilities and capacity for construction and nuclear aircraft carriers and ships comparable to the "Admiral Gorshkov" and "Admiral Nakhimov".

I'm not sure entirely what he meant by comparable to Nakhimov. Probably 14k ton nuclear cruisers as opposed to "heavy battler cruisers in the 24k ton range of the Kirov class".

A next gen Kirov would be cool. But my guess is that we'll only see carriers of that size in the future, and not mega cruisers like the Kirovs being build from scratch. But who knows?

TR1 is engaging in his usual distorted presentation of facts with severe omissions:

    http://www.janes.com/article/48313/russian-gorshkov-frigate-build-may-slow-without-ukrainian-gas-turbines

In addition, replacing ship engines is a big job. And we do not know how much damage the fire actually caused.

Why russian navy struggles in contructing new destroyers frigates etc ? Lack of fund ? Because China and US are building their navy at nice rate moreover maby of russian destroyers are either up for repairs or no longer usable etc ? They have lost the edge they had during soviet union era . Thankfully subs are still there

If just anyone could make modern capable ships they would.

Russia has to basically restock its entire inventory of ships and subs over the next decade and a half.

A ship will remain in service for 20-30 years at the very least so you have to be careful with the design.

Generally for every big ship there are dozens of smaller ships that support and operate with the big ship... right now they are working hard on building smaller ships and of course subs, while developing bigger ships. Bigger ships take longer to design and perfect... they have big old ships in stock so the urgency to get something into service right now is not there... it makes more sense to take their time and get it right.... despite wide eyed fan bois wanting it now now now. Rolling Eyes

Regarding comparisons with China and the US... how about we compare nuclear forces instead... Russias ICBMs are far superior to the ICBMs of any other country on the planet and they are still improving... I would think Russias current interests are best served with a powerful ICBM force than having lots and lots of ships it doesn't have the manpower to actually crew. Having boats tied up in dock is not a good use of resources... perhaps in 15 years time when they will start introducing carriers into service they can expand around the world and be more globally active at sea that having more ships will be useful... by then they will likely be pumping them out like China and the US is now.... or maybe they will never pump them out at that rate... what is the real problem if they don't? Pride?

lack of funds and because everything is new.. is easy for americans to build warships that have been done since the 80s again and again.. dozens of times.. like their destroyers.  In the case of Russia all is new ,including new weapons and having to design new engines from zero ,
to replace Ukraine that takes time..

TR1 however made it look as if delays of Russia was  incompetence.. ignoring the economic war they are facing today form the west with the sancitons and oil prices and default of its economy in the 90s.. that destroyed is industry .His lovely freedom nation USA will not be able to build a single warship or submarine if their economy collapse ,very simple concepts that short sighted people cannot see. How economy problems and building brand technology ,from zero can delay things.  US navy is mostly a navy from the 70s and 80s.. is warships and weapons..

Fortunately things are now much better for Russia than it was the 90s and they are now in the
process of a major modernization of most of their Navy , ARmy and Airforce..  Not even USA is doing that.. so takes time but they are on the right path of full modernization of their armed forces.. Now people don't talk anymore about Russian rusty submarines or how all they have is nukes and nothing else.. that they are incapable of producing modern military in the navy ,army or airforce like NATO, instead today the talk about how the USA will be modernizing too theirs.. Laughing   If you talk about armata.. no longer they talk about M1A2 but the talk is about how it took Russia so long to catch and that it will not matter because US in a few years will start a next generation tank too.. in other words, No longer Russia Industry capabilities are in question.. only the capability of its economy to build enough hardware for its armed forces.
For me thats a major Glorious achievement that the west no longer doubts of Russia capabilities and their arguments are more about Russian Economy or how they will be isolated by sanctions.

Russian intelligence ship returns from Western Atlantic voyage

The vessel took part in a joint exercise with the Venezuelan Navy, as well as several times paid friendly visits to Havana

MOSCOW, May 8. /TASS/. Russia’s intelligence-collection ship Viktor Leonov has returned from a long-distance Western Atlantic voyage to her Northern Fleet base, the fleet’s spokesman Captain First Rank Vadim Serga told TASS on Friday.

According to him, over the nearly five-month voyage the ship has covered more than 24,500 miles.

"The vessel took part in a joint exercise with the Venezuelan Navy, as well as several times paid friendly visits to Havana port (Cuba)," Serga said.

According to him, the Northern Fleet Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Nikolay Yevmenov "highly assessed professionalism and naval skills of the ship’s personnel who coped with all the set tasks." The crew were awarded the Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief’s Cup for their last year’s successes. In addition, distinguished navy men were awarded with the Defence Ministry medals, badges and merit certificates.

Viktor Leonov is a medium-class intelligence ship of Project 864. The vessel was built in Poland. It was commissioned in 1988, since 1995 the ship has been in service with the Northern Fleet of Russia. The vessel’s full displacement is 3,800 tons, operational range - 7,000 miles. The vessel is capable of developing a speed of 16.5 knots and the crew comprises 220 people.
