Navy will certainly become more important to China in the following decades. While China is already the hegemon in Eurasia, it lacks the means to project military power quickly and efficiently. That's where the carriers and fast combat support ships come in. Ideally China needs at least 10 Type 901 combat support ships before the end of the decade.

The Type 901 is not the only support ship the Chinese have.

Heavy frigate Type 052D #162 Nanning which was launched in February 2019 is commissioned tomorrow. The terrible delay caused by covid sucks but finally China's shipbuilding rate is back to normal.

Type 903 is comparably smaller and unable to support fleets beyond South China Sea. Considering China is hegemon of the Old World, more Type 901 support ships are needed to support Chinese missions to the western coast of Africa.

This time with the Liaoning, 1 type-055 destroyer, 2 type-052D destroyers, 1 Type-054A frigate and a Type-901 fast supply ship.

Except from the last 053H3 ships the Type 053 frigate is an outdated modell. Armed with SY-2 missiles (based on the P-15 Termit) its hardly relevant in modern naval warfare.
