What could it have done to shorten the war?

Even if it worked as advertised without problems it was boots on the ground in Germany than ended the war... bombing German women and children and old men in their homes a bit more was not the answer.

More seriously, that is a 1944 onwards set of photos. Perhaps they were testing the ability if the Spit to be a fighter bomber. Us English are well known for our 'Heath Robinson', 'lash-up' or 'what have we got to hand' approach to R&D.

The idea has been repeatedly tested and discarded.

Even in the jet age parasite fighters carried by large aircraft have proven to be failures and there was very little that was brilliant about them... without their engines on the parasite fighters were cold to sit in and rendered the aircraft carrying them unable to also carry a bomb load.

The external drag of the aircraft meant low speed.

If you are going to waste large aircraft like that it makes more sense to make them inflight refuelling tankers that can top up fighters and bombers alike.

The Soviets experimented with such aircraft in the 1930s with Polikarpovs and four engined DB bombers... it is easy to release from a bomber but takes enormous skill to hook back up so generally they just crashed the fighter... very inefficient... in planes and pilots.


A modern large aircraft with unmanned cheap light UAVs or UCAVs would be a different story however... as long as you could make them small and cheap and very manouverable... you could mount Igla or Verba as an air to air capability and send out a few dozen against a range of threats... you could even use them to attack enemy helos or MPA aircraft... situations where a real fighter would be overkill.
