Su-57 received the second stage AL-51F1 engine with a flat nozzle, 12.12.2024.
The First Channel of Russian television presented a trailer for the film "Lords of the Sky", dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the Pavel Sukhoi Experimental Design Bureau. The film itself will be aired on December 15 at 17:00, it is notable for the fact that for the first time the fifth-generation fighter Su-57 equipped with the second-stage engine "article 30" or AL-51F1 with a flat nozzle and deflectable thrust vector will be demonstrated.
The trailer for the film shows several shots of the T-50-2 prototype with the long-awaited power plant, as well as the Su-57M with two AL-51F1 engines. This power plant is the final link that makes the Su-57 fighter an aircraft that fully meets the requirements imposed in Russia on fifth-generation aircraft.
These requirements include multifunctionality, low visibility, super maneuverability, intelligence and all-aspect pilot awareness of the external situation, a large combat load with high-precision long-range missiles, and supersonic cruise flight without afterburners. The second-stage engine ensures the fulfillment of the last criterion. Therefore, the public demonstration of the Su-57 with AL-51F1 engines on Channel One indicates that the power plant is ready, has passed tests, and can be installed as a standard one.
In December 2023, high-ranking sources close to the Russian Aerospace Forces told TASS about plans to equip all Su-57s produced by the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aircraft Plant with AL-51F1 engines starting in 2024. However, the fighters that UAC had already transferred to the troops in the past year were equipped with the first-stage engines – AL-41F1 (“product 117”).
The development of the second stage engine ("product 30") for the Su-57 is being carried out at the Arkhip Lyulka Design Bureau. The first launch of the test sample took place on November 11, 2016. Flight tests began on the prototype aircraft with the tail number "052" (T-50-2) in December 2017. Instead of the standard left engine, the first prototype of "product 30" was installed on the machine, which then still had a round nozzle.
The new engine was first presented under the designation AL-51F1 in July 2023 at a scientific and technical conference on the prospects for the development of engine building at the Samara Technical University. In the presentation of "UEC-Kuznetsov" on one of the slides, the second stage engine for the Su-57 was designated as AL-51-F1.
The first stage AL-41F1 engine has a nominal thrust of 8800 kgf, 14500 kgf in afterburner and 15000 in emergency mode. According to experts and analysts in the aviation industry, the AL-51F1 engine will develop a nominal thrust of at least 11000 kgf, in afterburner - 17000 kgf. Considering the takeoff weight of the Su-57 over 35 tons, the thrust-to-weight ratio of the aircraft will be more than one - 1.15-1.2 at normal takeoff weight. Now this parameter is 1.09 at normal takeoff weight and 0.97 at takeoff weight with full load.
The documentary film "Lords of the Sky" will be shown on Channel One on December 15 at 5 p.m. for Moscow, St. Petersburg and the European part of Russia. Residents of the Urals, Siberia, the Far East, Kamchatka and Chukotka should check the time of the broadcast in accordance with the broadcasting grid of Channel One in each region.
