Questions in the poll are taken directly from an article from bigserge posted by member JohninMK (post 326, Russian special military operation in Ukraine #24).

The Ukrainians have been promising a big counter attack since the conflict started... a huge counter attack that will get all of the Donbass and Lugansk regions and also the Crimea if they get enough weapons from the west.

If this was it then I think the humiliation is misdirected.

The Russian tactics have not been to hold territory... they never had the troop numbers for such tactics to be realistic.

They certainly knew these attacks were coming, but why change tactics now... what they are doing is killing or capturing enemy armed combatants and this offensive by Kiev allowed them to kill several thousand enemy troops and the rest of the troops are no longer hunkered down in well prepared fortifications.

The Orcs would have hidden their preparations as best they could, but the Russians knew what was happening.

Essentially the Orcs tactics was to throw enough half trained conscripts at the Russian forces to keep them busy and use up ammo and resources and then send in the HATO trained forces to push the light Russian forces in the area back... which is essentially what they did.

The terrain was fairly open and there seemed to be nothing there they particularly were desperate to hold on to that they didn't fight for and keep.

The purpose is not to take and hold territory, the purpose is to get Kiev to push with their troops and kill them.

    Seems that went to plan.

If you believe the Russian forces were crushed and pushed back from Kiev then of course you will claim it has happened again, though this time there was more push from the Orcs... they didn't just move forward and occupy towns and areas that the Russian forces withdrew from.

So this was an unplanned withdrawal from pressure from the Orcs coming in enormous numbers... even Kiev admits to losing a lot of troops... and that is the plan.

How often are they going to be able to do something like this?

They took troops from across their defences to create this surge... with the loss of soldiers I would say volunteers will be getting harder and harder to come by... which is why they need to sell it as the Russian military being defeated and pushed back, when in fact they just met a numerically superior force and fell back while inflicting casualties on the enemy which the enemy really can't afford to sustain.

When the enemy are attacking thinly manned lines you can't magic up the forces needed to stop the advance... such forces would already need to be in place or very close by so stopping the Orc advance was never an option, but even if it was the HATO planners are not stupid and would have seen them and shifted the attack to somewhere else... where your extra manpower in this region would be useless.

This attack was the culmination of a lot of HATO resources, armour from eastern europe, training soldiers for 6 months or more and what have they got to show for it... some unoccupied villages and towns and cities emptied of pro Russian Ukrainians... maybe that was the plan... retreat and let them come forward... take all the friendly or neutral civilians out and then bomb the crap out of everything now the region is devoid of humanity.

Although I 'am unfortunately not general (for the payment.....) but could it be that, together with the Ukrainian offensive, the Russian and allied troops decided to fall back behind a line which is more suitable to defend with the upcoming autumn and winter in mind.

In a couple of weeks, the weather will be wetter, muddy followed by the winter and frozen ground. Now the Russian army still has time to dig in, make trenches, bunkers etc in the still relatively dry ground. Easier than with minus 30 degrees with your pioneer tool......

    my two cents...

Russians have been drawing troops from Kharkov oblast one month prior to Ukrainian attack. Given the low ground troops numbers they currently have at their disposal, the decision was made to withdraw the troops and regroup them on other fronts. And to be fair South of Ukraine and Donbass are more important right now.

The Russians have lots of equipment to dig trenches in frozen soil... they even have explosives including shaped charges intended on creating craters that can be shaped into individual positions for troops.
