There are only two options.

1. The SAA planned this and it's some kind of 5D chess 200 IQ move.

2. The SAA was caught woefully off-guard.

I think it's the latter. But there is always a lot of hype surrounding these types of offensives at the start, we have to see what happens in the next few weeks and months.

For now, it seems that the Turkish-backed HTS terrorists have managed to overwhelm the Syrian Army due to sheer numbers in terms of manpower. SAA reinforcements need time to organize and prepare.

As I said to a friend in private, the Syrian Arab Army needs to hold Eastern Aleppo City, on the east of the river, including the Citadel which looks over the city.

If they lose this, it's over. That's not 'defeatism', that's a simple reality. It would take months if not years to recapture it. Very difficult.

However, I will not make premature conclusions, we have to wait and see what will happen. I hope the situation changes.

The offensive against Aleppo initiated by Turkish-allied Islamists from Hayat Tahir Al-Sham (a re-branded Al Qaeda that has made common cause with ISIS) and the US-allied Syrian National Army is the consequence of a strategic plan between the Israelis and Turks, backed by the US, to cut off the supply route from Iran to Lebanon for Hezbollah, and threaten to destabilize/topple the Assad government, forcing Russia to divert resources from Ukraine to salvage their position in Syria. Ukraine has provided advisors to the anti-Assad militants on drone warfare. Israel has apparently extended its explosive pager/radio scheme into Syria as well, disrupting Syrian tactical command and control at a critical moment in the fighting.

Syria had largely demobilized, and Hezbollah had mostly returned to Lebanon. Iranian-backed Iraqi militias are ill prepared to contain this assault.

It is highly likely Aleppo will fall to the pro-Turkish Islamist forces. There will most likely be a concerted effort, led by Russia and Iran, to salvage the situation in Syria.

This will take time.
This offensive may threaten the ceasefire in Lebanon.
The biggest loser in all of this is Turkey and its President, Recep Erdogan.

This offensive could not have been carried out without close cooperation and coordination with Israel and the US.

Erdogan’s critical words against Israel have been exposed as empty rhetoric.

Erdogan has once again betrayed Russia.
And his support for Palestine has beed exposed as fraudulent in every way.

Russia and Iran will stabilize Syria.
This will take months.

Syria and its allies will destroy the Islamist stronghold in Idlib.
This will take years.

The Iran-Hezbollah supply line will be restored/maintained.
Israel will be defeated.
And the US will withdraw from Syria, probably in mid-2025.
And Turkey will continue to betray everyone it does business with, because Erdogan stands only for Turkey.

And that's all there is to it. The SAA is doing everything correctly.

The real problem is Putin's eternal naivety and good faith. He keeps making deals believing the other side will keep their side of the deal.

And it doesn't seem to matter that Putin has been betrayed many times before. He still keeps falling to these same deceptions and betrayals again and again.

Putin even himself lamented this in regards to Minsk agreements where he was betrayed by Merkel. Merkel made the deal in bad faith with the only objective being avoiding Ukraine's military defeat and collapse, and to rearm Ukrainian military.

The Islamists probably could have been defeated completely had Putin not agreed to the ceasefire.

Putin's no fool and during the same 2015-2022 period his team was busy re-orientating Russia's economy and accumulating reserves; and in this they were entirely successful.

You're being disingenuous now FP. In best case scenario, SAA lost western third of the city. There are geo located videos of them at the prison releasing prisoners, around and in gubernatorial building and even his office, as well as Aleppo university compound. Even if this is where they stop HTS advance, collapse of their lines is of staggering proportions.
Already tomorrow we will have more clear picture, but as of now situation looks very bad.
Btw, there are few Russian speaking "journalists" on their side reporting from suburbs and the city itself. Check them out, maybe you recognize your hairdresser or delivery guy.
As for Putin-Erdogan deal it is not worth the paper it's written on.
But I don't blame Russians for this collapse. This is entirely on SAA and Assad government. Russians are doing best they can considering circumstances.

All I can tell is that the terrorists sent some advance units forward into the city after affecting local breaches in SAA lines. That doesn't mean anything. These units will have to be supplied else they will have to vacate. SAA reinforcements will take the perimeter of the city under control and then anti-terrorist operations will be launched to flush out whatever Islamists opted to stay.

Hamas also broke relatively quite far into Israeli territory on October 7th but it wasn't able to stay anywhere there; these were quick raids.

If SAA lines collapsed then we'd see a lot of SAA taken prisoner. Nothing like that has happened. They retreated where they needed to and nothing of value was lost.

Reports suggest that there are a lot of reserves behind the initial terrorist strike force with some vehicles and so on but I can't see them occupying and digging into territory that quickly, never-mind organizing supply-lines.
These aren't some fields and villages in Kursk we're talking about but Aleppo, the largest city of Syria. There is no benefit to letting them make themselves at home.

And all these 'reports' are just the propaganda part of the offensive.

I am sure Russia has the firepower, manpower and equipment to spare for Syria if they do happen to be in trouble, but I guess they think their aviation for each passing day they keep bombing the militants will be sufficient. It's harder to recruit Arabs to kill other Arabs than it is being a recruiter in Ukraine finding civilians at gun point.
