Keeping people alive costs money

Why give them easy way out when Russia has places like Pyatak and Black Dolphin that will give them lifetime of wanting to die but not being allowed to?
and black dolphin has gotten lax over the years, plus to many people being alive even in a place like that is better then death
Punishment does cost money and it is money well spent if it get you what you pay for: punishment
I am not against death penalty but considering the methods we use today it can only be described as easy way out, if we had something like Spanish Inquisition or Vlad the Impaler to do their thing it would be a different story but we don't
Keeping someone in a box like Pyatak or ADX Florence while their mind rots away for decades and they wish they could die but are denied the satisfaction is the best compromise we can make in today's society (''I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream'' type of situation)
But if they are to be kept in some hotel style prison for just 25 years like in Norway then I say we definitely go for bullet to the head, better to just kill them fast than reward them with de-luxe accommodation

Work is seen as a reward and relaxation for prisoners, it would be counterproductive
Do the Japanese thing: force them to sit and stare at the white wall
In Japan they do it for days, now just imagine doing it for weeks or months?
Physical torture has expiration date and ends when your body gives out but mind lasts much longer and mental punishment is much lengthier and more horrifying
